Happy July 4. Chapter S is a great chapter to be in because of all the things that happen and the people that

are involved in the chapter. We have some good news for Chapter 2S. After a long and hard search, one

couple will be advancing as your new chapter directors. You may recognize them, as they have been with us

for a while now.

For those of you that were not at the barbecue on June 30, you missed out on a lot of fun. We had some very

good food, a great game of Bocce Ball, and the announcement of officer changes for chapter 2S.

First I want to thank all the cooks that supplied food for the barbecue, it was outstanding. Second, I would like

to thank Paul A. for putting up with the heat of not only the weather, but the barbecue grill while cooking the

meats. And a big thank you to Gary & Lori for opening their home to us for the event.

Let’s get back to the news of the month. Gary & Lori will be assuming the responsibilities of chapter director

for CA-2S on September 1 of this year 2018. They have filled the role of your Member Enhancement

Coordinator and as Chapter Store for the past several years. We greatly appreciate their service in that

capacity. However, they cannot do it all.

Moreover, another big thank you to Bob and Donna Fletcher. They will be joining the team as your new

Member Enhancement Coordinators for Chapter 2S. Donna has held that position in another CA chapter so

they will be a great addition to the staff.

But wait, that is not all. Remember I stated that Gary and Lori also had the role of Storekeeper. Sandy

Shewey will be filling that role. What can you say but thank you.

Don’t think that is all. The chapter still needs you. There are still some rolls to fill. The big ones have been

taken, but; there are some still very important roles to fill that are not as much work. Think about getting

back involved with the chapter. If not as a staff member then as a JAM (just a member). We missed you at

the gatherings. We would love to see you there. Come support our new staff as they fill their new roles. Any

help that you can supply, even if just encouragement, will be appreciated.

Thanks -

Acting Chapter Director.

Most of the active members of CA2S already know this, but I’ll mention it anyways. Lori and I are moving into the Chapter Director position. Surprised? We’ll be taking over the helm starting September 1st of this year. This was first announced at the CA2S’ 3rd annual “BBQ in Manteca” party. More on the party below. So what does this mean to all of you in chapter CA2S? Well, probably nothing to “most”. We don’t (as of this writing) expect any big changes. Maybe better jokes at the gathering? Just kidding; I have terrible jokes. Our focus will still be on having fun, riding safe, more riding, and of course education as our predecessors also did. So, not too much change “except” to say that we will be vacating the Membership Enhancement Coordinator (MEC) position that we've held for over 3-1/2 years. We’ve had a lot of fun doing this, but heck, it’s time to “pass the torch”, “hand off the baton” so to say to someone else. Another item that we are handing off is the Chapter Stores. We’ve been doing stores for even longer. Both the MEC position and chapter stores can be quite rewarding at times. There’s something to be said about seeing the fruits of your labor; the laughs, the smiles, the enjoyment. Too hard-sell? Maybe, but it’s true. What can I say? Besides and no worry, we’ll still be around to help out and advise if so wished.

* * * * * * * * * * Okay, enough about us. So what did we accomplish in June? Anything? You bet we did! We managed to squeeze in both our chapter gathering on our usual Saturday and also CA2N’s rally in Sonora all in the same day. Only five dedicated members attended the “early” 6:30am gathering. Too early for most. However, CA2S did a little better with nine attending the CA2N rally. As usual, CA2S made off with a number of raffle gifts, including three of the grand prizes. The following weekend, Ralph and Robynn French presented the “Group Riding” and “Road Captain” classes. Great turnout with 18 in attendance (including R&R) from CAC, CA2J, CA2N and of course CA2S. The two classes overlapped a bit in information, but it was nice to have the repeat to allow the info to sink in. As a result, we get a new patch to put on our vests. Yes! Lori didn’t immediately express any outward signs of joy since she’s the one that does all the sewing. On second thought, I’ll probably have to move pins in order to get the patches on the vests. Oh well… The last day of the month was the “BBQ in Manteca” party. 20 people attended. There was great food, great games, great conversations and of course some really great fun. Ralph French won the "Upper Bracket" in the Bocce Ball Tournament, while Sandy Hepburn won the "Lower Bracket". It was a bit too hot at 105 deg. so no one was up to trying the other yard games; not even the oversized Checkers. The heat eventually led us to clear out the living room and move a couple of tables along with chairs indoors for dinner. After dinner we drew the Streetmasters raffle tickets. Third place and $50 was won by John Hein of CA2S, and second place and $100 went to Jerry Wold of CA2J. First place and the Streetmasters certificate went to CA2S' Roger Moraes. Congratulations to all the winners. And, Thank You All that participated in our annual fundraiser raffle. Continued on Next Page

Guess what, it’s July. We are half way through 2018. And speaking of July, Happy 4th

of July. It is great being

part of America where we have our freedoms. One of those is being part of GWRRA and having the

opportunity to take training allowing us to be better. Better in riding and better in life.

One of those life classes is CPR. Have you checked to see if you are due for a CPR/FA class to keep current in

your levels. If you need one, contact Ralph French at [email protected]. If we have enough interest

we will get one scheduled soon.

CPR/FA is not only a levels requirement every 2 years, but it is a good skill to have. You never know when you

may be needed to save a life.

Following the drawings Ralph announced that Lori and I will be the next CA2S Chapter Directors. We got a hearty round of applause and a big sigh of relief from a couple others. I don’t know if this announcement had any bearing, but shortly afterwards a couple volunteered for the MEC position and then an individual came forward to take over Chapter Stores. Wow, wow, and double WOW!! I was almost speechless, and couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Thank you so very much for stepping up. “Love Ya, Man!!” I won’t mention in this article who these people are, but it will be announced once approved by District. So all-in-all a great month with great events and (lucky us) more to come next month. Until next month, be active, show some chapter pride, and of course ride!

Well it’s hard to believe the year is already half over. I’m sitting here trying to come up with an article

because I totally forgot to do it sooner. OOPs. I thought writing an article for Motorist Awareness was

tough at times but at least you can research the subject to come up with ideas.

The year so far for me has consisted of literally nothing but work and no play or participation with the

group for that matter. I am ashamed to say my Wing has done far more sitting than riding this year. Now

that summer’s here I hope to rectify that as much as possible. I hope all are doing well and enjoying getting

out their bikes. I will leave you with a recipe I got from my father recently. He is a great cook so I’m sure it’s

a good one. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but it sounds good.

Brisket

1 (4-5 pounds) brisket roast — if there is a thick layer of fat trim down to 1/4" inch

1-pound bacon

Sauce

reserved bacon from cooked

brisket

1 onion finely chopped

1/2 cup cider vinegar

1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar

1-2 cups chicken broth

1/2 cup ketchup

4 teaspoons canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, minced.

Instructions

1. Make the rub. Mix all ingredients well in a small bowl and set aside.

2. Place oven rack in upper-middle position and heat oven to 275 degrees. Rub dry rub all over brisket

and poke holes all over with a fork. Place half of bacon going crosswise in a broiler safe 9 X 13-inch

pan (it's best not to use glass). Put brisket fat side down on top of bacon. Lay the rest of the bacon

crosswise on top of brisket, wrapping it down around the sides, and tucking any excess-under. Cover

pan with foil and place in oven for 4 hours.

3. Take pan out of oven. Carefully flip brisket over, fat side up. Replace foil and return to oven. Turn off heat and leave brisket in oven 1 additional hour.

4. Pour accumulated juices from brisket into large measuring cup or a bowl. Remove bacon from brisket and chop into pieces. Cook bacon in medium saucepan over medium heat for about 3 minutes, until fat has rendered. Add onion and cook until softened, 4-5 minutes. Take off heat and add vinegar and dark brown sugar. Return to heat and simmer until reduced to a syrupy consistency, about 5 minutes.

5. Skim fat from accumulated juices and add chicken broth to make a total of 3 cups. Add to mixture in saucepan and reduce until about 3 cups in volume, 8-10 minutes. Take off heat and add ketchup. Mix well and strain if desired. After straining, add chipotle peppers.

6. Turn oven to broil. Brush brisket with 1 cup sauce and broil until top is lightly browned and fat starts to crisp. Cut brisket against the grain into 1/4-inch slices and serve with extra sauce.

Hi, we’re Paul and Ruth Androwsky. Don’t ask us how, but we are the 2018 COY for Ca2S. As Paul was growing up in Barstow he was not allowed to ride motorcycles because his mom was a nurse and had dug out lots of gravel from young

riders and she didn't want the same fate for Paul. After leaving his mom's at 14 he started riding - mostly out of retaliation. His first bike was an Allstate (it was made by Sears). When I was living with my Utah foster family they had motorcycles and he was able to ride sometimes. He quite enjoyed going back to visit his mom riding a motorcycle. Since he was grown, she really couldn't say much. Although you can't tell it by looking at him, Paul has never ridden a Harley Davidson, nor has he felt the need. Many of his co-workers have purchased Harleys through the (37) years. Each of them gave Paul a hard time about riding a Japanese bike, but each of them developed the stereotypical Harley mentality and unfortunately are no longer here. Motorcycles were Paul's main mode of transportation. Don't get him wrong, he had a car, but preferred the bike. We had an opportunity to go on a fancy dress date and the bike just wasn't appropriate. We got into the car and Paul just sat there. I asked what was wrong. He had realized that he hadn't been in his car for 2 1/2 years and he was trying to remember how the thing worked again. On a poker run on the delta Paul high sided and totaled the bike. We had enough money in the bank to replace the bike or make the down payment on a new home. The house won. A few months after we moved into our new home Paul found himself with an upset wife. It seemed that every time a motorcycle rode by Paul sighed. Ruth instructed him that he was going to buy a new bike, it didn't matter what size or color, but he needed to get himself back on a bike and ride. Riding around in the day on CB 750s was fun; but as he got a little older he realized that he wanted something reliable and more proportionate to his size. He found a blue 1984 GL1200, which we have to this day. As the kids (Donna 30 and Stephen 27) grew up we always managed to include them in our motorcycle endeavors. Paul really enjoyed be part of the kid's show and tell days and always managed to get a safety lesson in during the demonstrations. Donna has always been a great rider. The first time her dad took her on the freeway he noticed after a little while that she wasn't responding to him tickling her knee. He turned around in time to see her head lolling off to the side - she had fallen asleep. Needless to say Paul pulled off to the side of the freeway very quickly and we moved her in to the car. The ideal co-rider is one that you can't tell is even back there. Well Donna has always carried that to an extreme. Paul would straddle the bike in preparation to have Donna mount up. He would wait and wait and wonder how much longer she would take before she came out of the house. Finally he hollered her name and told her to hurry up. From behind him, he heard a small voice say, "I'm already on the bike daddy". He never did figure out how she could do that. Continued on Next Page

We were getting new tires for Paul's bike at the local Honda shop. Ruth knew that Paul had been drooling over the new Valkyries, so she asked the dealer how much they were asking for their new model on the floor. As the conversation progressed he showed us a 2 year old new Valkyrie and we were sold. We filled out the paperwork on the spot and Paul rode out on his 1998 blue and white Valkyrie. As the kids grew up (and beyond) we have both been quite active with Scouting. Paul was Scout Master for several years. He didn't always use his bike, but the Scouts all knew that he rode. On the way to a weeklong canoe trip he rode to camp on his bike. At the beginning of the trip, Paul apologized to the Scouts for not traveling in his uniform, as is the custom. He explained why he wore each piece of his riding attire and explained the need for ATGATT. As Paul was leading the 3 minivan caravan of Scouts down the freeway he (unfortunately) demonstrated that need when he had a rear tire blow out and he and the bike went down on the freeway - and he walked away. After years of following behind all the pretty bikes in the cage with the kids, Ruth realized that she too wanted to ride. After a bumpy start, she found herself riding a 1980 CB900. She commuted to work for several years and took a trip to Reno with Paul. When we went to the Motorcycle Show in 2013 we saw an F6B. From the first moment when Paul sat on the bike Ruth knew that it was meant to be. It looked like the bike was made for him. We saved up and got him a red one, that he is riding currently. Through the years we have been members of GWRRA, GWTA, AMA, Honda Riders Club, and Paul also joined Valkyrie Riders Cruiser Club and Sierra Road Riders Association (until a questionable club started overpowering the group and it was no longer family appropriate group). If you look around you will find Paul's name and picture in several magazines. In fact he has even made it into the pages of Thunder Press where his name was listed as a participant in the Blue Butt Run out of Reno (his co-workers were not too happy with that one). In all his years of riding, due to a bike breaking down, being sick or out of town Paul has never managed to participate in a toy run. We have enjoyed out time with Ca2S since Paul joined in the late 80s, and we are looking forward to many more years of friendships and adventures.

Here a Rally, there a Rally….

This year, my long vacation was much earlier in the year as I planned it out to start with Hoot in the Ute. The rest of the original plan was after that to visit two of my Aunts in Kansas before heading to my Dad’s in Alabama. When I was planning my route and what days where, an e-mail about Missouri District Rally came in, and it was going on exactly when I was going to be going through. I had to check out what they had planned and exactly where it was. It ended up being just 40 miles south of where I was passing. Even better, they had a CPR class where I would not need to get up extra early to attend. So, I was going to that as well. I adjusted my stops in the trip planner and set up stay lengths appropriately.

There are good odds that there may be another writeup for what happened in “… the Ute”, so I will just go with Missouri District. It seems that they tend to hold it often in Branson hearing talk about “Last year…here” “x years ago…here” and such. They basically almost take over 4 adjacent motels and use a long stretch of parking in the middle of the four for Vendors. The number of them that were there puts the last several years of “Region” to shame. You want your windshield decorated/etched, someone was there for that, plus pin striping and murals, chrome stuff, shirts, jewelry, a massage, wireless headsets, and more. A Honda dealer was there with 3 new 2018 (ST)Wings for demo rides. Actually, the headset vender was Mark who was also in Utah, but he was constantly busy with someone talking about what he is selling in Branson.

But it gets better….. Eating light like I was, I almost did not have to buy food. Thursday’s dinner was free at Golden Corral and there where discounts for dinner all of the other nights there. Lunch was provided Friday (pulled pork BBQ) and Saturday (hotdogs). The overall turnout was also rather good. I do not have the numbers, except there were 19 states represented. There were several from Illinois, including a couple of former CA-Cer’s Jenny and Neal with their GL1800 Side car. They gladly moved to Illinois a few years ago.

I would have liked to have done much more than I did while I was there. There was plenty to do away from the event that were not “rides” (unless the “ride” means “rollercoaster” and other theme park rides). I was glad that I included a stop there.

Enjoy, Douglas
