Letter from President
Aloha,
In a recent communication from the EWI Corporate Office, the topic was “Return on Investment.” What is in it for me? Am I getting the most out of EWI? As we are in the midst of the renewal process, here are some things that can be discussed with your executive on the benefits of being a member firm of the Honolulu Chapter.
Connections: An increased network New business opportunities An open door to more than 2,100 member firms in 67 Chapter
locations throughout North America
Careers: Relevant leadership skill development for member representatives Access to professional development for all employees Opportunities for business-to-business mentoring
Community: An elevated profile and awareness A focused avenue for philanthropic efforts with a non-profit that
champions scholarships and literacy initiatives Chapter-driven fundraising with a local impact
We all experienced these three things at the “Red, White, and Brew” beer and wine tasting joint fundraiser at the Plaza Club in November. What a wonderful event that was! Once again my heartfelt mahalo to the hard-working AdHoc committee and other representatives involved in the planning and implementation of this fundraiser and to our member firms for their generous donations to the silent auction and door prizes. With this kind of teamwork, I believe we can achieve any and all of our goals of what Executive Women International is about. Warmest Aloha,
Shelley T. Okubo President EWI of Honolulu 2010-2011

EWI – HONOLULU CHAPTER
Strategic Planning Meeting Wednesday, November 17, 2010
Retention and Retainment – This was the topic of this year’s strategic planning meeting. The Board focused on two questions:
What are some of the challenges in retaining member firms? What are some suggestions to re-energize member reps and keep them engaged and interested?
A survey was sent to the Board so they could ponder the questions and come up with viable answers. We came up with the following: Challenges in Retaining a Member Firm: Lack of participation from rep and/or member firm
Relevant program for reps and their companies Offering programs that appeal to our reps (professional development)
Firm not sold on the benefits of EWI Demonstrating relevance Not enough in it for the firm
Making the reps and their firms feel like they are an active part of the organization EWI is not a branded household name Dues and/or dinner costs Making reps feel welcome; overcoming cliques Financial (due to the economy, companies cannot afford to pay for memberships, dinners, etc.) Time (scheduling conflicts, company is too busy) Lack of interest Getting new members engaged and involved; getting older members engaged Getting members to see EWI as a priority
Solutions or Ideas to Get Reps Re-Energized/Engaged: President Shelley will personally call reps who have not been attending membership meetings. More buddy lunches. Pick a person you don’t know and call them. Invite them to lunch/dinner/coffee to get to know them
better. Get the executives more involved. Some reps may not be communicating about EWI to their
executives. Need commitment from the executives. Invite them to the scholarship dinners so they can see where
the money is going. Think of ways to incentivize reps to attend meetings (i.e. if they attend 10 meetings out of 12, they
would be eligible for the next month’s dinner meeting free). If a representative participates in “x” number of philanthropic events they are eligible for a free
dinner meeting. It is up to the committee chair to “ignite” their committees.
It is up to us to make an effort and make EWI – Honolulu Chapter the best that it can be by actively participating in our committee meetings, membership meetings and philanthropic projects. As we move into 2011 let’s extend ourselves and establish a goal to be more active in our chapter endeavors by placing more priority in EWI. There are so many benefits in being a member firm, not only for yourself but for your executive and your company.
December Business Meeting Iolani Sportswear was fun and beautifully decorated for the holidays. Ono food, shopping (our favorite!!), AND we got our business stuff taken care of! ~Val Tanaka
The IOLANI Story
Their story began in old Hawai’i when life was simpler and there was time to walk barefoot and dream. The vision to share the beauty and style of the islands through fashion came alive when Edith and Keiji Kawakami sat side by side on the beach watching waves crashing on the shore. The year was 1953, and IOLANI became a reality.
The first factory, a rickety old shack with dirt floors, was nestled just above ‘Iolani Palace. The Kawakami’s decided to honor the location and the history of the Hawaiian monarchy by naming their company, IOLANI Sportswear. They drew from their own ancestors’ ethics of hard work, honesty, and a commitment to excellence along with their dream, and their journey began. Today, IOLANI is one of the oldest and most respected clothing companies in Hawaii. They proudly commemorate more than a half-century of made-in-Hawai’i island fashions.
At the outset, IOLANI was known for its original “Kabe Silk” kimono print men’s shirts. Brightly colored fabrics were printed in Japan and imported to Hawaii where they were cut and sewn into “Aloha” shirts. Today, many of these original IOLANI shirts are prized by shirt collectors around the world. One such shirt is proudly displayed in the IOLANI Factory.
Keiji, Edith, Kiyomi and Jackson have long since retired. They have a new team of designers and a third generation of Kawakami’s at the helm. The basic IOLANI business philosophy still holds fast but this younger generation adds new innovations and style. Contemporary looks and directions continue to carry us onward.
Today, decades after the first stitch was sewn, IOLANI proudly holds its place of honor in island fashion. Yes, that dirt floor has been paved, and high rises block our views, but we still work hard to create the look of IOLANI and we try our utmost to have fun while we do it. So, whether your paradise is in the middle of the Pacific or simply in your heart, we hope you’ll understand why we say, “At IOLANI shoes have been optional since 1953.”
Thank you to Iolani Sportswear who donated 10% of the sales from the December meeting to our scholarship fund. EWI received a check for $99.10. Mahalo to all who contributed!
