Gold Wing Road Riders Association
Greetings
We hope everyone had an enjoyable July and a safe
and fun 4th of July Celebration. The 4th of July
comes around only once a year but we need to
celebrate our Independence every day and
remember the men and women who serve and have
served to keep our country safe and free.
As we enter into the activities for August we look
back at the things we did in July and say “Wow
what a good month, now how can we match or top
that for this month”. In July Chapter E celebrated the 4th of July with a
picnic and fireworks show at the Murfreesboro Sports Complex. What a
great turnout for this activity, fourteen members and ten guests. On the 9th
we held our monthly meeting at Shoney’s in Smyrna with twenty-eight
members and thirty guests attending. After the meeting eighteen TN-E
members took a ride through the countryside, stopping in Woodbury for
dinner at Chilangos Mexican Restaurant before returning home. On the 15th
four of our members played in a golf tournament to support the Cheerleaders
from Riverdale High School in their fund raiser for 2016. The following
Saturday, July 16th thirteen Chapter E members visited Chapter Y’s monthly
meeting and after the meeting seventeen members rode to Nolensville for
lunch at Martin’s Bar-B-Q. On Thursday night the 21st of July Thirteen
Chapter E members took a ride to Tullahoma to visit Chapter G at their
monthly meeting. The last week of the month was capped off with a week of
camping and fun by fifteen members at Defeated Creek Park on Cordell Hull
Lake that you will read about in this issue of “The Bulletin”. I could say it has
been “A Hot Month” weather wise, but I told you I wouldn’t so I won’t.
In the coming months we have so many activities to look forward to, Chapter
E’s meetings, The Kentucky Blast on the 19-20, our Chapter Campout on the
26-28 at Long Branch Campground at Center Hill, Wing Ding, Fall Color
Ride, The Veteran’s day Parades and the District OPS meeting just to
mention a few. There’s no shortage of things to do, come out and join in the
fun, you will be glad you did.
As always, THANK YOU to all the members of Chapter E for all you do to
make our Chapter the Great Chapter it is and will continue to be because of
you the members.
Thanks and Stay Safe

Time sure does fly, July is gone and August is definitely here. Feel the
humidity and the heat, boy its been hot. We had a good ride last month to
Chapter “G” with 14 Chapter “E” members attending. Our chapter took
home several door prizes with Brenda & Rennee Victory winning the
50/50. A trip to DQ made a perfect winger’s night. Speaking of winger’s
I notice a lot of people out riding by their self, if you know any of these
people invite them to come ride with us. You never know when you
could make a friend and a new chapter member.
Invite them to a meeting and let them see how we
roll.
Remember to be Safe, Have Fun, & Keep Riding

If you think you are to old to learn try attending a
motorcycle Experienced Riders Course (ERC).
Take it from a rider that has been riding for 39
years there is still a lot to learn. This class will
teach you how to roll over objects in the road, why
T-Clocks are important, importance of wearing the
proper riding gear, the proper way to negotiate a
curve and so much more. I thought I knew a lot
about riding a motorcycle, but I was very sadly
mistaken.
So if you are like me and have been riding a
motorcycle FOREVER, I strongly urge you to take
this course. I learned so much I didn’t know.
You may even get a discount on your motorcycle
insurance for taking the class. Remember safety is no
accident.

“Enjoying the Great Outdoors”
A number of us took about a week off during the last full week of
July, and headed out to Defeated Creek Campground to just hang out
and enjoy the company of friends from the Chapter. Our camping
group is growing, with this month’s addition of Steve and Dianne,
and Barry and Connie. When we first mentioned camping to the
Chapter it was really refreshing to see how many of our participants
had such an interest. It was an even greater surprise to find out how
many of our folks actually owned, or subsequently purchased an RV.
We now have a number of folks who own Class A, Class C, Fifth
Wheel, or pull behind recreational vehicles. Our entire group for
this event numbered 16 campers, although Mac, Janice, Tanner and Connie had to cut their trip
short and return to town for (that dirty word - - WORK). Murray came out to the campsite two
days behind the rest of us, due to a family member who had been visiting him. Although we had
some rain, we had some great times when the morning was dry and even better times around the
four evening campfires. One evening was devoted to our visit to the local Mexican Restaurant in
Carthage, where the cuisine is quite enjoyable. On another evening our group enjoyed a catfish
dinner with all the fixins” at the Marina Restaurant. May I add, the deserts that were available after
the meal were just great.
We had some excitement on one afternoon, when a storm blew through, breaking a number of tree
branches, and uprooting a few trees. Steve’s truck received some damage when a big tree branch
(half a tree) fell on it, and Barry’s awning suffered a couple of bent arms from the strong winds.
The term “fasten your seatbelt” has a different term now . . . but you just had to be there to
understand. I know our ladies weathered the storm well, because they just kept on playing dominos
through all of the chaos. They had to be intent on the game, because we heard that a comment was
made “Look at that tree come down!”, and one of the other girls immediately asked “Whose turn is
it?” Connie Glenn was victorious in a highly contested game of “Chicken Foot”. All the while,
Randy and Ed were keeping watch outside in the vehicle, where they had taken refuge when the
blinding rain began. Oh well, just another memory of exciting, and good times.
Barry was able to try his hand at some fishing, and caught one largemouth
about 12-13 inches long. There wasn’t a lot to do with just one fish, so he
turned it back to the lake, to grow larger.
On Wednesday, part of our group rented a large boat and spent about two
hours riding around the lake. I believe Murray will comment on the boat
ride, in his Article.
As usual, this was an enjoyable event for all (except for the one afternoon of
bad weather), and a great warm up for the Chapter campout at Long Branch
next month. We’re looking for a really good time, and have participants
from other Chapters planning to join us for this event.

“On the Water”
Many members of Chapter “E” were RV’ing at Defeated
Creek Campground and it was one of those hot humid days
where just sitting around caused a person work up a sweat.
It was a “no brainer” when Mac walked up and said “wanna
do a pontoon boat ride?” It was a ‘cool’ idea and a motley
crew was quickly assembled for a slow ride around Cordell
Hull Lake. Mac, Tanner, Barbara, Walter, Jeff, Geraldine,
Barry and Murray booked passage for the tour.
One of the highlights of the trip was at the marina where we
watched the large carp that hung out at the dock wanting a
free handout. Who knew that they liked popcorn so much.
Once they were fed, we cast off the lines and started the
tour with Mac at the helm. The ride was uneventful but
smooth and cool and we enjoyed the scenery around the
lake. Tanner took the helm for a while and did a good job
piloting the craft. He might make a good swabby someday.
I also took the opportunity to impart some nautical
knowledge on the crew. Port is the left side of the boat,
starboard the right side of the boat, aft is the stern of the
boat, forward is the bow of the boat. I could have gone on
but everyone’s eyes were starting to glass over so I guess
they were land lubber’s and ground pounders at heart.
Nothing wrong with that.
While returning to Port (the Marina, not left), Mac
demonstrated his bumper car navigation skills by testing the
sturdiness of the dock and our craft. He should stick to
driving tanks. Barry landed on his feet and took some
pictures from the dock of the crew and craft for the
Newsletter. All and all, it was a safe, cool and enjoyable
ride that I think most of us would like to do again
someday…..or, we could rent jet skis.
Ride safe, ride smart and SEE you on the next ride.

“Be Seen From Behind”
This month let’s explore some ways to help us be seen by people behind us as we
ride. There are a few ways to be more noticeable. One would be to have a helmet
brake light. For anywhere from $50 to as much as $200 you can install on your
helmet a module that can have a single brake light or even a right and left turn
signal so everyone behind you can know what you are doing. Would this work
better than the brake lights that are already on your bike? Due to the fact that not
only is the light in a different location then the average person is use to seeing.
Which would cause your eyes to draw to it, meaning it just might work better in
conjunction with your standard bike lights. The only down side would be if you
have a passenger you would have to have it turned off or have a second light kit on
the passengers helmet as well. Or we could take a page out of the book of every cyclist and use reflective tape or
even battery operated flashing lights on your helmet to help be more
visible. There are brake modulators that you can install with mini-
mal effort that makes your factory brake light pulse 2 to 3 times as
you brake to draw attention to your bike.
All of these are for one reason to be more
noticeable to other drivers.
Be Seen and Be Safe.

COUPLE OF THE YEAR PROGRAM: With only eight months of existence as a Chapter, Chapter “E” has no
official Chapter Couple of the Year, however it is our sincere pleasure to support the Couple of the Year
Program. We have among our participants three former Chapter Couples, two former Tennessee District
Couples and two former Region N Couples of the Year. It is our pleasure to embrace the Couple of the Year
Program in it’s entirety and consistently recognize those visiting Couples of the Year from our sister Chapters
who may participate at any of our Chapter activities and events.
Chapter “E” Tidbits It was great to host members from five other Chapters at our July Chapter Social. All in all, we had 30 guests who took time to join us and
joined in the camaraderie. A number of participants who are members of the District Team, were among our visitors.
Congratulations to “Mac” McGlothlin, who won the Quarter Fund for the month of July.
Congratulations to Jeff Jones & Brenda Lane for winning one of the 25/25 drawings in July. The other 25/25 was captured by Leonard
Costanzo from Chapter TN-Y.
The Chapter “E” website will initially launch during the next few days, and although “under construction” for the next few weeks, it is steadily
progressing and projected to be fully on line by September 1.
Several of our participants were enrolled in, and completed, the Experienced Rider Course, presented by the local Motorcycle Safety Foundation
Instructors on July 30.
Don’t forget the Chapter annual camping trip to Long Branch Campground on Center Hill Lake will be conducted on 26 - 28 August. Be ready
and plan to have a good time. We already have the majority of campsites near the gazebo booked, so rain or shine, we’ll have a good time.
The “Wings Across Tennessee” ride to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis will be conducted on 17 and 18 September. Plan to
attend, as we ride to Memphis to present our Chapter’s donation to the children of St Jude.

And Now, We have TWO! We all were shocked when Ed & Mary Ann made the decision to trade in their Goldwing Trike for a
Polaris Slingshot, and showed up in their new ride for the first time during the joint Chapter Fall Color
Ride last year. But now we have two Slingshots in the Chapter, the second one belonging to Dennis and
Marty Wolfe. There’s something patriotic about the above two photos. Check out the colors . . . Red,
White and Blue. Both couples are enjoying their new rides and having a ball. One thing for sure, “If
you don’t like a lot of attention, don’t buy a SLING.” No Randy, these are not OCMs (inside joke).

(The following comments by the TN District Director were extracted from the August TN District Newsletter.)
District OPS Meeting will be held on November 19. The location will be announced soon. We just want you to
know the date so you can make sure you are available.
As you know James and Jerlene Smithson stepped down as District MEC’s. We are sorry to see them go but
understand about work and having time to handle the MEC position. Work and family come first. Well we asked
for resume’s from interested parties and have made a decision on our new District MEC’s. We would like to
introduce Dennis and Anne Greer as the new Membership Enhancement Coordinators for Tennessee. Dennis and
Anne have a long history in GWRRA. They both are University Trainers. Dennis was the National Newsletter
Coordinator until National did that position. They have been their Chapter COY’s and competed for the District
COY 2012. Dennis is very knowledgeable on the ARL and has taught classes in that area. Dennis and Anne are
active in Rider Education and are Level IV Master Tour Riders. We are
very pleased and honored to have them on board the District staff. They
will be assuming their duties August 1. Welcome aboard Dennis and
Anne.
Winter Event is set for January 14, 2017 at the Lane Agra Center in
Murfreesboro. This will be our COY selection and hope to see all our
COY’s attending. Patti and Vickie have worked to find us a suitable
location that will have enough room for all our activities. I think it is
going to be a New Year’s theme. January will be a good time for us to
get together and have a good time. More information will be coming.
Ride safe and have fun.

“Featured Members of the Month”
Art and Doris Seely are Chapter “E’s” newest participants. Art is originally from Ridgeway, IL, and a retiree
from Trans World Airlines and Yellow Trucking, Inc. Doris is a native of Nashville, TN and a retiree from the
Nashville Metropolitan School System, where she still works part time. The Seely’s have two children (living
locally) and three grandchildren. Art and Doris enjoy traveling, and recently returned from a vacation in
Hawaii. They made mention of an impending planned trip to the Smokies in the coming months. They ride a
2000, red, Honda Goldwing GL1500, with a California trike conversion kit. Some of their travel plans
surely include some motorcycle riding, because they recently purchased a tow-behind trailer for their bike.

Don’t forget to:
“Look Twice, and Save A Life”
(This article was extracted from the July edition of the 2016 GWRRA Insight Newsletter)
“First Responders”
Are You A First Responder? (If your Chapter, District or Region needs more response to your
flyers, invitations, etc., this might just fit in your Newsletter) When you receive a flyer
announcing a Chapter, District or Region event, or any communication that asks you to RSVP,
what do you do? Most of us just push it to the back burner for a while. We might think about
it, maybe check our schedules and perhaps talk to our spouse, or just do nothing right then.
Did you ever stop and think about what we just did by doing nothing? We just slapped the event planner in the face.
This poor soul (who, by the way, is a Volunteer) has the huge job of planning how to entertain us at this event, be it
a ride, dinner, rally or even Wing Ding. Their job is to make a myriad of arrangements on our behalf, making sure
that our experience is positive and fun-filled. These events include many opportunities for us to really enjoy
ourselves and the people around us. These incredibly talented and dedicated people in our organization have
devoted many hours of blood, sweat and tears to arrange the meeting place, route, rest stops, places of interest,
meals, entertainment and, of course, an affordable and comfortable place to stay. Their job is really difficult when
you consider that most of their planning is done without the answer to the very important question: “How many
Members are going to attend?” The answer to this mystical and important question rests solely with you and me.
These hardworking Volunteers have been forced to make many, many decisions involving you and me with only an
educated guess, at best, about who will attend. They have even been forced to make reservations for meals, lodging
and meeting space with mandatory deposits, many of which are non-refundable. Many a sleepless night has been had
by these dedicated planners and volunteer leaders trying to outguess the rest of the group. What can we do to avoid
this dilemma? It’s really very easy! We can become a “First Responder” when we see that flyer or invitation
asking for an RSVP by responding immediately. The dictionary says RSVP is a French phrase that translates to
“Please respond.” It is a standard practice to reply to an RSVP request confirming attendance or declining. Yes,
even if you can’t or don’t want to attend, let us know, please. Here is a wonderful opportunity for you to have your
voice heard by the event planner. Let them know in a positive manner about your concerns regarding the timing
(hour, day, month, etc.) location, distances, type of event, cost , activities, type of food or anything that would cause
you not to attend. This is very valuable information for our volunteer leaders and planners. Positive feedback is one
of the most important parts of any successful organization. In order to become a First Responder we must do a
couple of things ourselves. When we receive an invitation we need to consult our calendar, communicate with our
spouse and then make a commitment to attend and, most importantly, communicate that information using that flyer,
registration or invitation. In first aid and CPR a First Responder can make a difference in someone’s life. With a
registration form, flyer or invitation, your response can also make a difference!! Sandi and I, along with all of our
volunteer leaders and planners thank you in advance for your support on this note. We congratulate all of those
Members who are ready to become First Responders.
