“The Bulletin”
Chapter “E”,
Stones River Wings
Gold Wing Road Riders Association
Since our last Newsletter we have enjoyed several
Chapter activities, dinner rides, bowling days, lunch
rides, the Smyrna Christmas Parade, our Chapter
Christmas Party and last but definitely not least, the
Chapter New Years Day Ride and lunch. The ride was
somewhat colder than the last few years but four
Members decided to brave the cold and ride our
motorcycles even though we had several comments
regarding our mental condition, all in fun of course. We
appreciate so much the twenty-two Chapter members
who gathered at The Depot Junction Café in Watertown
to enjoy a great lunch and celebrate the incoming New
Year.
As we enter 2018 we are looking forward to a year full of fun and exciting times for
Chapter E. Our first Chapter meeting of the year will be held on Thursday evening
January 11th instead of Saturday the 13th because the District Operations meeting and the
District Winter Event are taking place on that date. We encourage everyone to attend both
of these activities; the OPS meeting will give you a look into how GWRRA operates at
different levels; the Winter Event is fun and games, meeting old friends and making new
ones. The highlight of the Winter Event will be the selection of the Tennessee District
Couple of the Year. Our own 2017 Chapter Couple of the Year Walter and Barbara
Donnell will be participating in the selection, let’s show them how proud we are of them
by turning out in force to support and cheer them on.
We would like to congratulate Chapter E’s 2018 Couple of the Year, Barry and Connie
Glenn, a very deserving couple and great representatives of Chapter E. Also
congratulations to Jeff and Geraldine Jones, Chapter E’s Individuals of the Year.
Looking ahead to upcoming events; in addition to the OPS Meeting and the Winter Event
we have one other event scheduled for January, our bus trip to the Tropicana Casino in
Evansville, IN on January 27th, we are still taking sign-ups for it. February 5th we will be
at the Nashville Fairgrounds for the Murfreesboro Antique Car Club’s Swap Meet, this
will be a Motorist Awareness Event. Starting this month Chapter Bowling at the Smyrna
Bowling Center will be every Monday and Wednesday at 9:00 am until further notice,
come join in the fun. Spring Fling in Pigeon Forge, TN will be April 12-14, 2018, the
deadline for Early Bird registration is February 10, 2018 and all pre-registrations must be
in by March 10, 2018. As everyone knows Wing Ding will be in Knoxville this year, be
thinking about attending Wing Ding in 2018.
2017 was a great year, thanks to all the Members of Chapter E for making it so
successful; I know 2018 will be even better. We wish everyone the very best in 2018.

By the time this edition of the “Bulletin” goes to press, 2017 will be in our rear view mirror, and
we’ll already have had a couple of events in the new year. As an almost thirteen year participant of
GWRRA, I can look back over our tenure in the organization and fully appreciate what we’ve
managed to build within Chapter E, in the two short years that we’ve been in existence. We can all
be proud of the accomplishments of the Chapter and the many recognitions that have been bestowed
on the Chapter and some of our participants during the past twelve months. It goes without saying”
that we must be doing something right”. As I reflect on the past 24 months, I cannot think of an
instance when the entire Chapter hasn’t been enthusiastic about some event, project or activity that
we were involved in, or planning to initiate. In essence, that’s probably what lays the ground work
for the fun and accomplishments of Chapter E, and the backbone of our enjoyment of being a part of
the fun loving group that we are. The versatility of our activities has encompassed the entire group.
We all love to ride motorcycles, however we have also conducted other interesting activities that have
bound us together. We enjoy each others company, otherwise the other activities such as camping,
bowling, golfing, our Motorist Awareness activities, and the frequent dinner rides wouldn’t be so
well attended. There’s always been a great deal of pride in our Chapter, and we remain hopeful that
the “esprit de corps” will continue for many years to come. There’s been some movement to draw
down the volume of leadership within GWRRA, but I’m pleased to see that we’ll continue to operate
the Chapter much the same way as we have in the past. The real key to the Chapter is the fact that
most of us have some overall responsibility to the Chapter and the organization, and that’s what
keeps us active . . . really being a part of it. In this Chapter it’s proven to be true, “you get out of it,
what you put into it”. Continued success is ours, if we just keep , keepin’ on.
Congratulations to David and Nancy Broadway, who garnered the Chapter “High Mileage Award”
for 2017. The award will be presented at our New Year’s Day Ride, as we kick off the riding season
for 2018. This year it was a very close race, however David’s West Coast trip simply blew away all
the competition.
Congratulations to Barry and Connie Glenn for their selection as the Chapter E Couple of the Year
for 2018. We know they’ll represent the Chapter well. And, to Jeff and Geraldine Jones,
Congratulations on their selection as Chapter E “Individuals of the Year”. As Randy commented at
the Christmas Party, Jeff and Geraldine have attended practically every event (and there have been
many) that the Chapter has participated in, or conducted for 2017.
The Christmas Party was once again a huge success. A lot of laughs, a great meal, and camaraderie
overflowing. If you missed the party, we missed you, and you missed a good time. The gift
exchange went well, and many of us received some pleasant surprises. The concept of buying for a
specific person has contributed to the fun, and in most cases provided more appropriate and
meaningful gifts in the exchange. A very special thanks to Jamie Sweeney, who joined us again this
year, and coordinated our use of the Pinnacle Facility for our party.
Contained in the following pages are some photos taken during the course of the Christmas Party.
We tried to capture an image of everyone, but may have missed a few. The group photo was a great
one, and the type of photo that we’ll provide to the District, at their request, of our Chapter
participants.
If you didn’t report your closing mileage on your motorcycle (s) for 2017, there’s still time to get on
board for the 2018 High Mileage Award. Just report your mileage to me, so that we have the starting
mileage (that’s all there is to it)
We have a few folks who are closing in on their membership renewal dates with GWRRA.
Remember to renew on time, to avoid your lapse and required reinstatement with the home office.
The Winter Event and District Operations Meeting is quickly approaching. Don’t forget to attend the
Winter Event, where we’ll be there to support Walter and Barbara Donnell, as they participate in the
Tennessee District Couple of the Year Selection Process.
Thanks for allowing us the privilege of serving the Chapter as ACD and MEPC for another
year. Let us all resolve to make 2018 even bigger and better for Chapter “E”.

“Look Twice, and Save A Life”
Passing the Torch Walter and I enjoyed our time as your couple of the year, we had
so much fun, made lots of new friends and gained a world of
knowledge from this wonderful experience. We want to thank
you for all the support you have given us along the way, it
wouldn’t have been the same without each and every one of you.
We would like to Congratulate Barry and Connie Glenn our
2018 Couple of the Year. We look forward to hearing from
them in our February Edition of the Bulletin.
Winter Motorcycle Storage
There are several things you should do to prepare your motorcycle for the cold winter months. You
may think we should of covered this months ago but for several New Years Day is the last riding day
before winter. So that is why I choose this month to go over some motorcycle storage tips.
1. Top off your tank with fuel and add fuel stabilizer. This keeps condensation from building in
your tank which causes rust.
2. Take all the old oil out and prepare to put fresh oil in when riding season begins.
3. It’s a good ideal to wash and wax your bike before storing and keep it under a cover or in an
enclosed area. If you are coving your bike be sure to use the correct cover for your bike and
make sure the cover is breathable and well ventilated.
4. Cover your mufflers to keep rust from forming in your pipes. Never use plastic covers because
it holds moisture.
5. Either remove your battery or place a battery tender on it to keep it healthy.
6. If available place your bike on a center stand this will help the tires hold their shape. Keep the correct air pressure in your tires even
though it’s not being ridden
It’s not the cold weather that wears on your bike it’s not riding it for a long period of time.
Always Remember to Ride Safe and Stay Aware

2018 Couple of the Year
Happy New Year 2018
Well another year has gone and as we look at this year we are reminded how
little things can make a big difference in getting home safe. One thing in the
months of January and February is the likelihood of cold frosty mornings with
snow and ice buildup on cars...which is a very real possibility. What causes
frost on cars? This is caused by moisture inside of the car, which could be
from wet floor mats or other surfaces inside of the car. This moisture
evaporates, turns to water vapor, becomes supercooled and then forms ice on
the outside of the car windows. Now some of us go out before having to leave
for work, start our cars and defrost the windows so we can see. Then there are the lazy or late folks that
get in, starts their car and maybe scrapes a one foot by one foot section so they can see ONLY what’s in
front of them. They get on the road waiting for the car to heat up and defrost their windows so they can
see in front, behind and all around them. These are the cars you need to be watching for and give them
plenty of room because all the ice on their windows is blocking them from being able to see what or who is in their path as they change
lanes, speed up or slow down.
Keep alert and stay unhurt in 2018.

Murray Dunkin I grew up in the small city of Newton in central Iowa. We were a Scouting family and my brother and I became Eagle Scouts. My Eagle
Scout project was painting all the Fire Hydrants in Newton which took all of my summer vacation that year. Who knew there could be
so many in one small city. I went to Iowa State University for two years after High School but let my grades get too low and was drafted
into the Army. All the armed forces induction centers in Des Moines were in the same location so I checked with the Navy and was on
my way to Navy Boot Camp that night. Three of the coldest months of my life were at Great Lakes Boot Camp in the winter of 1968.
After Boot Camp, I extended my enlistment by 2 years for electronics training and I spent a year in Key West Florida going to sonar
school. It was really a great year. I couldn’t afford a car back then so I purchased my first motorcycle, a used 1964 Triumph Bonneville.
I survived learning to ride and the basics of motorcycle safety on our monthly rides to Fort Lauderdale for a little R & R. I also learned
motorcycle maintenance as English Motorcycles back then suffered all kinds of ailments and required constant repairs. At least
Triumphs were simple to work on.
I then spent the next 4 years of my enlistment on Submarines and made 2 trips to the Mediterranean. While on the Sub, I traded the old
Triumph for a new 250 Suzuki and entered my dirt biking phase. When you are young and bullet proof, it’s a lot of fun racing through
the woods flat out. I got out of the Navy after 6 years and used the GI Bill to start my career in the computer field that lasted for the next
35 years. I kept riding the dirt bike until the aches and pains from crashing too much in the woods told me it was time for a change.
I quit riding for several years but got back into street bikes when I bought a new 1976 Honda CB750. It was a great bike and sometimes in a nostalgic moment, I wish I still had it. I made several trips out west with my brother and other friends on the 750 and that’s when I
saw my first Goldwing. On our first trip out west while riding in Utah, I noticed two headlights in the mirror several miles behind us. The next time I checked the mirror, the two bikes went flying by well over 100 mph. When we caught them at a gas station down the
road, it turned out to be 2 Canadians on brand new GL1000 Goldwing’s. We had a great time riding with them for a while but we couldn’t keep up. My first experience and impression of the Goldwing left me wanting one someday.
I sold the venerable 750 and transferred to Atlanta, Ga in the early 80’s for work. It was a lot of years without a bike as I had no desire to
ride the roads of Atlanta on a motorcycle, but, I purchased a used 1983 GL1100 Goldwing and joined GWRRA in 1996. My
expectations of owning a Goldwing were fulfilled as well as making a lot of new friends in the GWRRA. I was working a lot of hours
and weekends back then so I didn’t ride as much as I wanted too. I did, with a friend, ride to upstate New York via the Blue Ridge and
Skyline Parkways. We rode the parkways in two days which turned out to be an endurance run. I’ll never do that again as we took a day
off afterwards to just to rest up.
I transferred to Murfreesboro in 1999 and have made Tennessee my home but I was still working a lot of hours and I wasn’t too active in
the GWRRA. I traded the GL1100 in at Sloan’s for a slightly used Valkyrie which I totaled in, guess where….Atlanta. I then purchased
a used 2001 black 1800 Goldwing and was back in the saddle again but not too much as I was still working a lot of hours. I rode the
black wing to the Wing Ding in Billings Montana where I met Mary Ann and Ed by chance. It was a very fortunate meeting for me as
they became very good friends and encouraged me to become more active in the local chapter, which I did. I now have a white 2005
Goldwing with matching Escapade trailer and a 2001 Valkyrie with matching Bushtec Trailer.
I retired from work in 2009 and now have a lot more time for GWRRA and chapter activities. Fortunately for me, Ed and Randy asked
me to become the Chapter Educator which became quite an education for me. With a lot of years of riding experience and surviving
relatively intact, I thought I knew a lot about riding a motorcycle and rider safety. Boy, was I wrong. I have learned more in the 4 years
I have been Chapter Educator than in the previous 30+ years I was just learning as I rode. I hope I have been able to pass along some of
the knowledge I have gained over the past 4 years and pledge to continue to support rider education as a means to rider safety. I have
made a lot of good friends in the GWRRA family and sincerely hope that everyone stays safe by continuing to ride safe and practice safe
riding techniques learned through rider education.
RIDE ON AND RIDE SAFE!

I have kept the CD’s up to date as we received updates from National about the changes coming this
month. I hope that they have shared this information with their members. So far we have not received
anything new from National. They only thing I have noticed is under the Officer Resources and down
under Finances there is a new financial download program for 2018. I have downloaded this program
and it similar to the old program. I think this program will make keeping your financial records much
easier. Simply right click and download. This program keeps up with what you take in and what you
spend and adds and subtracts automatically. They also have written instructions on how to use the
program. If you are a treasurer I would recommend you downloading this program and putting it to
use. It will help in keeping up with your records.
As we have said many time over the past few month the changes are focused on fun, social events,
riding and having less rules. They are asking the District to become more involved in participation
with the Chapters. They are looking at the DD more as a Coach. They are looking at the CD more as a Coordinator of fun, activities,
rides and more fun. They are working to make the gatherings more informal and to add more riding.

Sending much love, prayers and well wishes out to Mary Ann Grazier and

Mighty Fine Texas Chili
2 tablespoons olive oil 1 1/4 pound lean ground beef
1 cup chopped onions 4 medium size cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons chili powder 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons ground cumin 1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 quart (4 cups) beef broth 1 can (14 1/2 ounce) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 can (10 ounces) diced tomatoes with green chiles 3 cans (15 ounces ea.) pinto beans
Directions:
1. Place a rack in the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 300 degrees.
2. Place the olive oil in a large, heavy soup pot over medium-high heat. Crumble in the
ground beef, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook, stirring, until the beef browns
all over and is nearly cooked through, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the onion, garlic and cook,
stirring, 2 minutes longer. Reduce the heat to medium and stir in the chili powder, flour,
cumin, and oregano. Slowly add the beef broth, stirring until it is incorporated. Stir in
the diced tomatoes and the tomatoes with chiles.
3. Cover the pot and carefully transfer to the oven on the center rack. Bake the chili until it
thickens nicely and has cooked down, about 2 hours.
4. Transfer the pot to the stove and carefully remove the lid watching out for the escaping
steam. Stir in pinto beans then replace the lid. Cook the chili over low heat, stirring
occasionally, until the beans heat through. Serve the chili garnished with red onion,
sour cream, and cilantro sprigs.
