6.6 Burnham station is located to the immediate west of the centre of Slough in South Buckinghamshire and within the Borough of Slough. Burnham station is in an area that is predominantly residential. A photograph of the station is shown in figure 6.1

Within this route window the main Crossrail works will involve:

    • Introduction of overhead line equipment throughout; and Figure 6.1: Burnham station – Station entrance

    • Platform extension works at Burnham station. 6.7

The station entrance can be accessed through the station car park via Sandringham Court or from the station approach road via Station Road. There are footways on Station Road and Burnham Lane. Two pedestrian refuge islands and dropped kerbs with tactile paving have recently been installed adjacent to the bus stops on Burnham Lane.

Crossrail services will provide new direct links and additional capacity to the West End, City and Canary Wharf business district and onwards to Essex and via interchange at Abbey Wood to North Kent. Journey time savings to these key destinations will be substantial as set out below.

Two worksites will serve the platform extension works at Burnham station: Burnham station is located next to the junction of Burnham Lane and Station Road. The junction of Burnham Lane and Station Road is located around a small triangular green. The north and east junctions of the triangle are priority-controlled whilst the west junction, which provides access to the station approach road, is controlled by traffic lights. These traffic lights also control the flow of alternate one-way traffic that is necessary under the restricted width railway bridge on Station Road. Both Burnham Lane and Station Road are unclassified roads that pass through residential areas.

    • Burnham Lane worksite.

The works are expected to take about four months.

The drawings provided at the end of this chapter present the main features of the route window, construction lorry routes assessed, existing facilities in the vicinity of Burnham station and transport linkages.

Burnham station is on the Great Western Main Line with trains operated by First Great Western Link. Long distance trains do not stop at Burnham station. Currently, there are four trains per hour in each direction during the morning peak hour serving destinations to Slough, Ealing Broadway and London Paddington to the east and Maidenhead and Reading to the west.

Bus services on Burnham Lane are minimal, currently only two bus routes serve the station directly. Only three buses per direction serve Burnham station during the morning peak hour.

Another three bus routes stop on the A4 Bath Road, which are some 400 m to the south of the station.

6.21 No significant traffic and transport impacts have been identified that are associated with this worksite.

There is a minicab office at Burnham station. This office is located in the station forecourt and is operational 24 hours a day. There are seven parking bays reserved for the minicab office in the station forecourt.

Burnham station has a car park that has a capacity for 60 vehicles. The vehicular access to the car park is from Sandringham Court, which is immediately to the north of the traffic lights at the Burnham Lane and Station Road junction. A short flight of steps on the southern boundary leads passengers to the station entrance.

A significant amount of on-street parking occurs on Sandringham Court, which is located to the immediate north of the station car park. Parking is not permitted at any time on the southern kerb of Sandringham Court from the junction with Station Road to the western boundary of the station car park. Burnham Lane and Station Road generally do not have parking restrictions except for Station Road from the junction with Burnham Lane to the south side of the railway bridge. However, on-street parking does not generally occur on these roads.

Informal drop-off and pick-up at the station can satisfactorily occur by the station entrance.

Burnham Lane has recently been provided with advisory cycle lanes, pedestrian refuge islands and bus stop cages in the vicinity of the station. Sheltered cycle parking is provided immediately next to the station entrance with capacity for 16 cycles.

The signal-controlled junction of Station Road and the approach to the station does not have pedestrian phases, but it does have dropped kerbs with tactile paving.

At present there are no formal mobility impaired drop-off and pick-up areas or reserved parking bays at Burnham station. A short flight of steps connects the station entrance to the car park, that is not ideal for mobility impaired passengers.

Burnham Lane worksite will be located in an area of open land to the northeast of Burnham station, as shown in figure 6.3.

A new access will be formed along Burnham Lane. The permanent works

The island platform at Burnham station will be extended westwards to accommodate Crossrail trains.

Worksite assessment Both worksites are located north of the tracks and have been grouped together because they share similar lorry routes. A description of worksites and lorry routes are provided below and shown on Map W21 (iv).

    Sandringham Court worksite north

Sandringham Court worksite north is located north of the Great Western Main Line at the western end of Sandringham Court. Use of the site will result in the loss of four residential on-street car parking spaces for seven months (see figure 6.2).

Lorry route access to the worksites will be from the A4 Bath Road and along Station Road. Access to the Sandringham Court worksite north will be via Sandringham Court. Access to the Burnham Lane worksite will be from Burnham Lane.

Peak construction activities will occur for a period of approximately four weeks, during which time the number of lorries generated by each worksite will be four per day. At other times the typical number of lorries will be approximately two per day.

Mitigation and temporary impacts There are no significant traffic and transport impacts to report, so no mitigation is required.

Mitigation and permanent impacts The significant operational impacts and mitigation measures are indicated in table 6.2.

Passenger numbers with Crossrail are expected to increase by about 200 passengers entering and 150 passengers leaving the station in the morning peak period, an increase of approximately 30 per cent in two-way usage compared to the without Crossrail scenario. The 2016 with Crossrail flows predicted at the station are approximately 1,550 two-way between 0700 and 1000. The existing station facilities will be sufficient for the forecast passengers and thereare sufficient traffic and transport facilities in the vicinity of the station to cater for the forecast numbers.

There is one significant operational impact to note at Burnham station. Passengers are forecast to experience significant journey time benefits.

    Impact on journey times

Table 6.1 sets out representative journey time savings between Burnham and selected Crossrail stations. They are typical of the journey time benefits to many of the stations served by Crossrail
