 Parsing code D
 How Piel verbs begin:
– Dagesh Forte in R2
– piēl - paēl
– Participle preformative ממממ except Qal and Niphal
– Piel preformative vowel Shewa ( לי י י י לקט לקט לקט קט לת ת ת ת , לקט לקט לקט קט למ מ מ מ , לקט לקט לקט קט )
 VS pattern Ē(A) ~ Ē
– Tsere everywhere
– Except Pathach in the Perfect 1st and 2nd person
Beware when R2 is SQiN eM LeVY

3-Guttural in the Piel Stem
 3-Guttural changes Stem Vowel
– Strong Ē(A) ~ Ē
– 3- עעעע////חחחח A ~ A
– אאאא-3 Ē ~ Ē(A)
– הההה-3 The same as 3-הההה in other stems
 Remember what 3-הההה verbs do.
No need to memorize the rest.

2-Guttural/Resh in the Piel
 2-G means 2-Guttural
2-G take Hateph vowel instead of Vocal Shewa
– E.g., DP3cp is לולולולוט ט ט ט ק ק ק ק but לולולולוח ח ח ח נ נ נ נ for 2-G 2-G and 2-Resh reject the Dagesh
– רררר/אאאא-2 almost always compensatory lengthening
       so DP2ms כת כת כת כת ב ב ב ב כת כת כת כת בר בר בר בר so DM2mp מומומומוח ח ח ח נ נ נ נ מומומומונח נח נח נח = QP3cp
– 2- עעעע////חחחח////הההה usually no compensatory lengthening in Piel
DP3cp מומומומונח נח נח נח מומומומונח נח נח נח DM2mp מומומומונח נח נח נח מומומומונח נח נח נח = QM2mp

For 1-Nun, Piel Perfect = Niphal Perfect
They are strong verbs in the Piel
They are identical to Niphal in the Perfect
– שת שת נג שת נג שת נג נג is נגשנגשנגשנגש (D/N)P2ms
– נ נ נ נ is Nun of Niphal and 1-Nun of root in the Piel
– גגגג is Assimilated 1-Nun in Niphal and Doubling of Piel
– Same VS in the perfect 1st and 2nd person: A vs. Ē-a
– Same reduced VS in the P3fs and P3cp
 Different in the 3ms
– Because Piel VS is Ē(A)~ , whereas Niphal VS is A~
– NP3ms = ללללצ צ צ צ נ נ נ נ vs. DP3ms = ללללצ צ צ צ נ נ נ נ

Biconsonantal Piel is Spelled pôlēl
Piel wants to double R2 with a Dagesh
Biconsonantal verbs lack a R2 so they reduplicate R3
 V1 always Ô ( )
– Can be written defectively as Ō ( )
– Bicons lack V1 for piēl–paēl, so perfect = imperative
VS same as strong verb Ē(A) ~ Ē
 Example: רוםרוםרוםרום– ר מםר מםר מםר מם = DP3ms = DM2ms = D∞ (DA never occurs)
– DP2ms מת מת ר מ מת ר מ מת ר מ ר מ– DI3ms יר מםיר מםיר מםיר מם

 Geminate verbs are sometimes strong
– E.g., לת ,הללהללהללהלל לת הל לת הל לת הל יהלליהלליהלליהלל ,הל
Geminate verbs are sometimes pôlēl Ē(A) ~ Ē
– E.g., רת ,פ ררפ ררפ ררפ רר רת פ ר רת פ ר רת פ ר יפ לליפ לליפ לליפ לל ,פ ר– Some books call this the pôēl
