in the second column:

1.respiratory system a. regulates body functions

2. muscular system b. break down food

3. digestive system c. pumps blood4. cardiovascular system d. absorbs oxygen

5. endocrine system e. moves bones

Objectives

• Review how tissues, organs, and organ systems are related

• List 11 organ systems

• Identify how organ systems work together to maintain homeostasis

Topic #1: Homeostasis

• Tissues and organs work together to maintain homeostasis in the body.

• Each cell has a role to play to help maintain homeostasis.

Topic #1: Four Main Tissue Types

• (1) Epithelial Tissue: covers and protects underlying tissue (skin)

• (2) Nervous Tissue: sends electrical signals through the body (brain, nerves, sense organs)

• (3) Muscle Tissue: contract and relax to produce movement

• (4) Connective Tissue: supports, nourishes, cushions organs. Keeps organs from falling apart

Topic #1: Eleven Organ Systems

• Figure 3 in your textbook

• Use Figure 3 to complete the worksheet to explore what each organ system is in charge of in your body

Chapter 22.2: Skeletal System Topic #1: Function

• Bones are not dry and brittle. The skeletal system is made up of bones, cartilage, and connective tissue that holds bones together.

Chapter 22.2: Skeletal System Topic #1: Function

• The average adult has 206 bones.

• The Skeletal System

• (1) Protects: heart, spinal cord, brain

• (2) Stores: minerals for muscles and nerves to work well. Long bones store fat.

• (3) Moves: skeletal muscle pulls on bones to give movement.

• (4) Makes Blood Cells: bone marrow makes red blood cells

Chapter 22.2: Skeletal System Topic #1: Function

• In children, red bone marrow fills the center of long bones.

• In adults, red bone marrow is replaced with yellow marrow.

Chapter 22.2: Skeletal System Topic #2: Structure

• Compact bone: rigid and dense. Contains small blood vessels.

• Spongy bone: open spaces and has strength and support.

Chapter 22.2: Skeletal System Topic #3: Growth

• Most bones start out as cartilage (flexible)

• Most children still have growth plates, which provides room for bones to grow.

Chapter 22.2: Skeletal System Topic #4: Joints

• Joint: a place where two or more bones meet

• Some joints allow little to no movement.

• Joints are classified by the movement they allow.

• Joints are held together by ligaments (strong elastic bands)

• Cartilage cushions joints
