Page 5: Chapter 21 Tobacco Lesson One The Effects of Tobacco Use Pgs 540-545

Cigarette Smoke Cigarette smoke contains tar, a thick sticky

Page 9: Chapter 21 Tobacco Lesson One The Effects of Tobacco Use Pgs 540-545

Smokeless Tobacco

Smokeless tobacco is just as addictive as smoked tobacco

Causes leukoplakia (white spots in the mouth) that can develop into cancer

Page 10: Chapter 21 Tobacco Lesson One The Effects of Tobacco Use Pgs 540-545

Smokeless Tobacco Damage Smokeless tobacco

Page 13: Chapter 21 Tobacco Lesson One The Effects of Tobacco Use Pgs 540-545

Long-Term Effects of Tobacco Use

Chronic bronchitis which develops because the cilia no longer function and the lungs are built up with tar

Emphysema is a disease that destroys the air sacs in the lungs so the person must use 80% of their energy just to breathe

Page 14: Chapter 21 Tobacco Lesson One The Effects of Tobacco Use Pgs 540-545

Long-Term Effects of Tobacco Use

Lung cancer occurs when the cilia are destroyed and mucous cannot be expelled

Coronary heart disease and stroke because nicotine reduces circulation and blood flow and adds to plaque build-up in the artery walls
