Suburban Rail Loop will transform Victoria’s public transport system connecting our suburbs and creating opportunities in great places; $2.2 billion has been provided to kick start the project.
The 90-kilometre Suburban Rail Loop will link every major rail line from the Frankston line to the Werribee line, via the airport, better connecting Victorians to jobs, retail, education, health services and each other.
It will ease congestion and take pressure off the existing transport network. The project will generate a long pipeline of work and construction activity, creating up to 20,000 jobs during construction.
As well as delivering significant transport benefits, Suburban Rail Loop provides an opportunity to plan the services, amenity and infrastructure we're going to need outside of the central business district (CBD) for future generations.
Suburban Rail Loop will be delivered in stages over several decades, with an Initial and Early Works package of works commencing in 2022, subject
to approvals. These works will create up to 800 early direct jobs and pave the way for major construction.
Stage One: Cheltenham to Box HillStage One will connect our growing health, education, retail and employment precincts in Melbourne's south east between Cheltenham and Box Hill.
The 26-kilometre Stage One corridor will be built as a twin-tunnel, standalone line to fully integrate into the existing public transport network.
New underground stations will be built at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill.

Suburban Rail Loop benefits for all of Victoria
The biggest infrastructure project ever undertaken in this state
Improving travel around Melbourne
As Melbourne's population continues to grow, the current radial system must evolve. Suburban Rail Loop will change the way people live and move, easing demand on the existing transport network and shifting more people out of their cars.
Creating jobs, growing our economy
Creating a long pipeline of work over several decades, Suburban Rail Loop is expected to create up to 20,000 jobs during construction, including opportunities for up to 2000 apprentices, trainees and cadets. In the longer term, Suburban Rail Loop will also create and support more jobs closer to where people live.
Developing and connecting growth areas
By connecting Melbourne's middle suburbs, Suburban Rail Loop means Victorians will no longer need to travel through the centre of Melbourne to access health, education and employment centres. Improving cross-suburb transport and increasing economic activity will drive business opportunities and clusters of new jobs in the precincts around the new stations.
Connections for regional Victoria
Three transport super hubs at Clayton, Broadmeadows and Sunshine will connect regional passengers to Suburban Rail Loop. This means better access for regional Victorians to our world-class education and health services, jobs and retail in the middle suburbs.
Stage One station locationsExtensive planning and design work, geotechnical investigations and engineering assessments, as well as stakeholder consultation, have determined the preferred locations for the six new underground stations.
These sites will now be subject to a concentrated geotechnical drilling program and further stakeholder and community engagement to confirm their suitability and determine the exact underground station footprint and entrances.
Cheltenham
A new station at Sir William Fry Reserve will connect to established retail and hospitality facilities, including Southland Shopping Centre.
Clayton
A transport super hub north of Carinish Road will provide access to medical and health services and link passengers from regional Victoria to the Loop.
Monash
Located adjacent to Monash University, the new station will provide a rail connection for the first time to the largest employment and innovation hub outside the CBD, providing easier access for thousands of students and workers.
Glen Waverley
A new station west of Springvale Road, will be located central to the Glen Waverley activity centre and the existing train station and bus network.
Burwood
Located adjacent to Deakin University and near Burwood Highway, the new station will connect thousands of students and staff to the rail network, alleviating traffic congestion.
Box Hill
The new station at Box Hill will be at the heart of the activity centre providing connections to the existing train station, shopping centre and health and medical facilities.
Stakeholder and community engagement
The community and stakeholders will play a key role in shaping this transformational project for current and future generations.
It’s our priority to consult widely with the community — ensuring Victorians are informed of project updates and get a chance to have their say on this city and state-shaping project.
Engagement in the short to medium term will be focused on digital and online forums and carried out in line with COVID-19 advice.

Project timelineTechnical, planning and design work is well advanced, and community and stakeholder engagement is underway along the Suburban Rail Loop corridor.
Geotechnical drilling and engineering assessments concentrated in the Stage One station location areas will help confirm their suitability and refine critical elements including station footprints and entrances.
These on-the-ground activities, along with expert technical assessments, are helping to inform planning and design work and preparation of a full Investment Case.
