‘Super Heroes for a Super Night’Reverse Drawing is August 20:Hurry, Tickets Selling Fast!

The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce presents the 2016 Reverse Drawing on Saturday evening, August 20, at the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City.

Reverse Drawing tickets are now on sale at Chamber headquarters, 801 Arendell St., Morehead City. Open to the public. You do not have to be present to win the Grand Prize of $10,000.

Each ticket is $100. Only 325 will be sold. Your ticket admits two adults to the best party

of the summer season. Doors open at 6 p.m. Buffet dinner, open bar, silent auction, entertain-ment and fun. Free cab ride home to any loca-

tion within Carteret County from Carteret Cab.This year’s theme is: “Super Heroes for a

Super Night.” Dress is beach casual, but come dressed as

your favorite Super Hero from any era to com-pete in the costume contest to win prizes.

Plan Early to Participate in Leadership Carteret 2017

It’s not too early to call ahead and reserve your place in the Leadership Carteret 2017 program, starting in January and going through March. The Leadership Class meets for 10 con-secutive Wednesdays.

“This will be our 29th season to offer Leadership Carteret and our slogan is: ‘Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders Today,’” said Lana Collmann of the Chamber.

“The goal is a comprehensive orientation about contemporary issues and challenges that are unique to Carteret County. We introduce the class members to the county’s top business

leaders and decision makers,” she said. “We visit places off the beaten path and behind the scenes in order to give the participants an expe-rience they will never forget. We guarantee it.”

The Leadership Carteret Steering Committee (consisting of past graduates of the program) will be formed in September and applications will be available after Labor Day.

Tuition is $415 for Chamber members and $525 for others. The class is limited to 35 par-ticipants. Address inquiries to Lana Collmann at lana@nccoastchamber.com.

“One of the best marketing tools a company can have is an employee who shines at custom-er service,” said Chamber President Tom Kies. “We’re looking for those high achieving individu-als for our 2016 ‘Outrageous Customer Service Awards.’”

Change of Command Aboard Coast Guard Cutter

Members of the Military Affairs Committee attended a Change of Command Ceremony at Fort Macon on Friday, July 8th, when the 110-foot patrol boat, USCGC CUSHING welcomed Lt. Mario Gil as its new commander. The com-mand was turned over by Lt. Russell Newkirk, who had commanded the cutter for the last two years. Lt. Newkirk is leaving the Coast Guard in order to go to medical school. The Change of Command ceremony took place at Coast Guard

The USCGC CUSHING is the twenty-first

“Island Class” patrol boat and is named after a privately owned island in Casco Bay, Maine. Although built primarily as a law enforcement platform, CUSHING, like most Coast Guard units, is considered a multi-mission resource. CUSHING recently completed a homeport shift from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Atlantic Beach in March of 2015.

Debbie Fisher Honored as Ambassador of the Month

The Ambassador of the Month for June at the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce is Debbie Fisher, who is a Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics as well as owner of Office Fusion Solutions and the Professional Business Center. “Ambassadors earn points each month for carrying out their assorted duties,” said Julie Naegelen, who is the Chamber’s staff liaison to the Ambassadors Club.

“Debbie is the consummate networker and she enjoys making the one-on-one contacts with fellow Chamber members to encourage their participation in the various Chamber events and functions. “She was a major contributor in this year’s ‘Operation Thank You’ delivering the new Business Directory & Visitors Guide to our members,” Naegelen said.

This is the 39th time that Debbie has earned the Ambassador of the Month since 2006 and she has been the Chamber’s Ambassador of the Year for six of the past seven years. She is also a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

her current position. She is the “go to” person for all Chamber’s administrative and online needs. Her responsibilities include updating social media and the website, directory, online advertising and keep-ing the Chamber’s extensive database maintained. Susan also makes sure you get your PULSE every Monday.

First and foremost, this stellar staff is devoted to giving value to the Chamber membership!

So what can we expect to see in the near future for the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce?

• Earlier this year, we did a survey of our mem-bers and overwhelmingly, the suggestion was that we become more digital. We agree. We’ve started increasing our presence on social media, made it easier to purchase tick-ets to events, like the Reverse Drawing, online and we’re streamlining and condensing our email blogs.

• We are taking a look at our print publications to see if we can make them more user friendly.

• We are evaluating our events to see how we can maximize networking opportunities for our members.

• We’re exploring ways to bring more value to our members.

• We are looking for collaboration and partner-ships.

• We’re going to bring more value to our sponsor-ship packages.

And I want your input!I personally invite our members- and non-members-

to take time to talk to me and share your ideas on how the Chamber of Commerce can be more valuable to the business community.

The Chamber’s mission statement is “To improve the economic climate of Carteret County.” I can’t imagine a higher purpose for any Chamber of Commerce.

Message from the President

Chamber 2.0I’d like to start my

first column in the Chamber News by thank-ing Mike Wagoner for twelve years of Chamber of Commerce leader-ship. Mike’s dedication and professionalism has helped to make Carteret County a premier loca-tion for business and

for leisure. He was absolutely outstanding at keeping an eye on legislation- local, state and federal- that had the potential to impact business here on the coast. Mike, I know you’ll stay active in the commu-nity (he’s already joined the Chamber!) and we’ll be seeing you out and about.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to introduce (or reintroduce) the Chamber staff.

Our newest staff member is Lana Collmann who is our Program Manager. She is also the staff liaison to the Military Affairs Committee who hosts different events throughout the year to recognize and show appreciation to military personnel in Carteret County. Her responsibilities also include the coordination of the annual Reverse Drawing which brings out over 500 guests the night of the event and is one of the

Chamber’s largest fundraisers. In addition, Lana coordinates Leadership Carteret, a ten week program taking members of the commu-nity for an intense learning experience that covers everything from government and educa-tion to culture and commerce. Every Tuesday, Lana produces the Chamber’s Member Notes that’s emailed to over 1,500 people, sharing information from our members to other mem-bers about upcoming events and to help them stay connected to each other.

Julie Naegelen has been the Director of Membership Services since 2006. Her phi-losophy is simple: Members first and fore-most. She’ll do anything that helps Chamber members survive, thrive and grow. Julie is the one who schedules, plans and conducts the Ribbon Cuttings, the Business After Hours and the Business After Hours Expo that showcases 65 member businesses at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. Julie is the staff liaison for the Ambassadors Club who go out and do ‘facetime’ with our nearly 900 Chamber members. She coordinates the annual ‘Membership Drive’ and represents the Chamber with Connect Carteret- A Young Professionals Network.

Susan McNamara is the Director of Administrative Services at the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce. She started at the Chamber as the Program Manager in July of 2015 and in October of the same year she moved into
