Many of you reading this may have
attended the Tyler Economic
Development Council’s annual
luncheon in April during which
Texas State Demographer, Dr. Lloyd
Potter, said that Tyler is one of only
two areas in Texas in which the
average age is decreasing. He also
stated that Smith County’s population
grew by about 2,000 last year. Growth
is evident to anyone who drives around
Tyler and sees the amount of new
construction and business openings.
It is my belief that our healthy,
diversified business community is one
of the attributes that are attracting
individuals and families to our area
and that members of the Tyler Area
Chamber of Commerce contribute
greatly to this effort. I have been
amazed at the energy and dedication
of our board of directors, various
committee members, the committee
chairs, and of course, our staff who

The Nominating Committee of the Tyler AreaChamber of Commerce has nominatedfourteen individuals to serve on theChamber’s Board of Directors beginningOctober 1. Along with the annual survey, aballot is being mailed to the membershipto select seven of the fourteen nominees.This process of electing directors has beenin place seven years.
The Nominating Committee this yearconsisted of the current council officers,chairman, chair-elect and three at-largemembers not currently serving on the board.
The newly-elected directors will beintroduced at the October Board meeting.
The 12th annual East Texas Kick-OffLuncheon will take place at Harvey ConventionCenter. The luncheon will be held Tuesday,August 15th from 11:30 am-1:00 pm. Forty twoarea high school and college football coacheshave been invited to bring one senior footballplayer along with them. The attending playerwill receive a $250 scholarship from ourmain event sponsors Azalea Orthopedicsand Texas Spine & Joint Hospital to be usedtowards furthering their education.
In addition this year the Watch List forThe Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award will beannounced. The Award will be presentedJanuary 10, 2018.
The guest speaker will be Johnny Quinn,current U.S. Olympic bobsledder and formerNFL Player. Also a video presentation willhighlight the previous 2016 football season.KTBB Sports Director Bill Coates will emceefor this event. For more information contactCindy Smoak at [email protected].

is to our area. Tyler and Smith County
are very fortunate to be the home of
Tyler Junior College, Texas College,
the University of Texas at Tyler, and
UT Health Northeast. Obviously, our
pre-school, primary, and secondary
education institutions are extremely
important too. I applaud the citizens of
Tyler for recently approving the bond
issue that will pave the way for much
needed improvements to John Tyler
and Robert E. Lee high schools. On
August 3, 2017 the 4th annual citywide
#School is Cool event will be held at
Harvey Hall and the Rose Garden and
it promotes student readiness for the
upcoming school year. This program
is one of many conducted by the
Tyler Area Business Education Council
which is overseen by your chamber and
its goal is to provide 1,500 backpacks
filled with school supplies to attendees.
Many of you contribute to this worthy
cause and we thank you for that.
While the next couple of months will
be a time that many are scheduling
vacations, there will be a number of
opportunities to network with Chamber
members and some of the more notable
events are the 2017 Chamber Day at
the Airport (Tyler Pounds Field) on
July 13th and the 12th East Texas
Kickoff Luncheon that will be held on
August 15th at the Harvey Convention
Center. Information about all of these
events and others can be found on
the Chamber’s website.

GOLF TOURNAMENT SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 18
NOMINATIONS FOR ANNUALW.C. WINDSOR AWARDRecommendations for the annual W. C. Windsor Award are now beingreceived by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce. Nomination formsare available at the Chamber offices, 315 N. Broadway. These formshave also been mailed to civic leaders throughout the community fortheir recommendations. Deadline for the receipt of nominations is5:00 p.m. Friday, August 18, 2017.
The award is awarded to a young person, between the ages of 21and 40, who is a resident of Tyler, and who has exhibited the“greatest activity and achievement in community betterment.”
Claude Henry, Chairman of the Chamber Board, said the Award,established in 1952 by the late Tyler civic leader, W.C. Windsor, wasfounded to encourage development of young leadership in the community.
Selection will be accomplished by a committee of outstanding communityleaders appointed by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce. This awardwill be presented at the Chamber’s annual meeting on October 3, 2017,along with the T. B. Butler Award, the Volunteer of the Year Award andthe Business of the Year Award.
BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARDNOMINATIONS ENCOURAGEDThe Business of the Year Award recognizes thosebusinesses and organizations that give so much to ourcommunity by actively supporting the mission of theChamber, which is to enhance the business environment,economic well-being and quality of life for the Tyler area.These businesses and organizations are nominated byour Chamber members.
The Chamber will recognize the Small Business of the Year(a business with 50 or fewer full time employees) and theLarge Business of the Year (a business with more than50 full time employees) at the Annual Meeting onOctober 3, 2017. Last year’s Small Business of the Yearwas The Genesis Group and the Large Business of the Yearwas Suddenlink.

CHAMBER ANNUAL MEETINGSCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 3The Annual Membership Meeting of the Tyler AreaChamber of Commerce will be held October 3 at theHarvey Convention Center. The annual meeting, heldeach year, highlights the accomplishments of theChamber’s fiscal year ending September 30. Therewill be presentations of the Contact Club’s OutstandingProduction Awards, presentation of the T. B. ButlerAward, the W. C. Windsor Award, the Chamber’sVolunteer of the Year Award and the Business ofthe Year for large and small businesses.
The Butler Award is presented annually by theT. B. Butler Publishing Company to honor anoutstanding Tyler citizen of the year. The W.C. WindsorAward is presented in conjunction with the W.C. Windsorfamily to honor an outstanding Tyler citizen under theage of 40. Last year’s T. B. Butler Award recipient wasRev. Jerome Milton and the W. C. Windsor Award wentto Nathaniel Moran.
The Volunteer of the Year Award will be presented to the outstandingvolunteer for the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce. Four individualswere selected during the year as Volunteer of the Quarter and, fromthose four, a Volunteer of the Year will be selected by the Volunteerof the Year Committee.
