Membership Blitz June 7, 2012 22 Chamber member volunteers made courtesy calls on 150 new business mem-bers. In total, more than 213 new members joined the Chamber in 2011-12.

Shop Smart. Shop Local. Ongoing Campaign A kick-off press conference was held at the Chamber in May 2012 as the Chamber partnered with the Amarillo Globe-News and City of Amarillo for the third year to support and promote a campaign to encourage the Amarillo community to shop at home. Shopping local increases the local sales tax dollars that provide needed community services like police, fire, and infrastructure. The Chamber has added the Shop Smart. Shop Local. logo to our busi-ness cards and advertisements, and we encourage everyone to help pro-mote this message in their own marketing plans. The City of Amarillo reported a record year for sales tax collection the past year.

Faces, Places & Open Spaces Book May 2012 The Chamber partnered with Ron Lammert, Historical Publishing Network, to produce and publish 500 copies of a beautiful coffee table book of original photographs from Ralph Duke with narrative by Christine Wyly of the things that make Amarillo a great place to live, work and raise a family. The book featured more than 80 local company and organizational profiles. A limited number of First Edition hardback books are avail-able at the Chamber for purchase for $39.95 plus tax for members, and $49.95 plus tax for non-members.

Ready for the Real World? January 18, 2012 Civic Center Over 1,900 AISD high school students attended sessions on Career Choices, Living on Your Own, Education and Training beyond High School and How to Manage your Money. Over 30 local companies participated by serving as presenters in the sessions. The purpose is to give these students the opportu-nity to better prepare themselves for college, trade school and/or the work-force. iLead AISD September 15, 2011, November 3, 2011, February 2, 2012, March 22, 2012 AISD Board Room Forty-two community leaders participated in the iLead AISD program. The goal of iLead AISD is to develop a continuing core of active, well-informed advocates who are familiar with the “big picture” and issues that confront AISD. They can share information they learn with the community and may step into campus and district leadership roles. Sessions focused on 1) Curriculum Development, Management and Assessment, 2) Community Relations Department, Governance, Leg-islative Issues Related to Hiring, 3) District Demographics, School Finance, Budget, Technology, Facility Design and Support Services, and 4) Athletics, Career and Technology, Fine Arts, AISD Online School, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Special Education, Bilingual Education, Gifted and Talented, Guidance and Counseling, Student Health Services and Library Services. The partici-pants graduated from the iLead AISD in April. Annual Civic Beautification Landscaping Project

This committee selects a location in need of landscaping and develops a partnership with that organization to make sure the com-pleted landscaping is kept maintained by the organization. Approximately 50 trees will be planted at Another Chance House in November 2012 along their new duplexes built to house homeless veterans. Shop Smart Shop Local Celebrate the Arts August 21, 2012 Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts Those arts entities participating included Amarillo College Con-servatory Theatre, Amarillo Little Theatre, Amarillo Little Thea-tre Academy, Amarillo Master Chorale, Amarillo Museum of Art, Amarillo Music Teachers Association, Amarillo Opera, Amarillo Symphony, Amarillo Youth Choirs, Broadway Series, Carson County Square House Museum, Center City of Amarillo, Kwa-hadi Museum of the American Indian, Lone Star Ballet, Lone Star Ballet Academy, Panhandle Plains-Historical Museum and Windows on a Wider World. The Arts Committee The Arts Committee provides financial assistance to local non-profit arts organizations to help them pro-mote their seasons. They sponsor and maintain an arts website and a weekly arts ad in the Amarillo Globe-News arts section that ran from September, 2011 – May, 2012.

CVC Wrap-Up Amarillo and the Amarillo CVC had a strong year in 2011-12. Hotel occupancy tax collections are up 4% for the fiscal year. Business booked for future years also ticked up in 2011-12. CVC staff were visible at major meetings in TX, the US and abroad to promote and sell the city. Several new properties opened during the year including Stay-bridge Suites and Comfort Suites, all in the Western Crossing, and the Fairfield Inn & Suites opened by the airport. Candle-wood Suites is scheduled to open soon. The RV Museum opened in February and garnered lots of at-tention across the nation. Pioneer Town at PPHM re-opened after extensive renovations, leading the way for attendance increases at the museum. The Blue Dog exhibit at the Amarillo Museum of Art just wrapped up, bringing lots of new attendees to that attraction. TEXAS remained a major draw for the area, with an attendance increase this year.

All 16 partici-pants have renewed for 2013.

Top Twenty Under 40 award nominations were submitted to the Chamber. The names of the nominees and their employers were removed from all applications and replaced with an assigned number, before being presented to the awards committee for the selection process. Each application’s scoring was broken down by 60% professional, 20% community service, and 20% personal achievement. So although professional achievement marks the largest percentage of the scoring, community service and personal achievement are both an important factor in the selec-tion process. Business award application’s where scored by 60% business steadiness, 20% business growth or innovation, and 20% community service. So although business steadiness was the majority of the scoring, growth and community service were important categories. Not only were the applications scored, but meetings between the business owner(s) and members of the awards committee were scheduled for site visits to be done. After the applications were scored and the site visits completed, the selection committee discussed all of the businesses, and the winners were selected. Editor’s Corner By: Penni Bentley, Senior Director of Communications penni@amarillo-chamber.org The Chamber operates on a fiscal year from October 1—September 30 each year, so the Annual Report is always a great year-end project to highlight the activities and accom-plishments of the Chamber. It allows us to take a look back at the many ways the Chamber has impacted the Amarillo com-munity through our networking activities and programs. Many times we get front row seats to witness the birth of new businesses in our city. We celebrate them with ribbon cuttings and ground breakings and help share their vision with poten-tial customers. We work with local and area legislators to see that the issues that are important to our local economy and businesses are heard in order to help create a climate for suc-cess. There is great pride and satisfaction in seeing local organiza-tions hire employees and grow their business whether we had a hand in it or not. Our goal is to have not just a successful Chamber, but a successful Amarillo. We truly want to help make Amarillo a great place to live, learn, work and play. Chamber Received National Publicity from ACCE The Chamber’s Annual Good Times Celebration® Barbe-cue Cook-Off was featured in a four-page article in the Spring 2012 American Chamber of Commerce Execu-tives (ACCE) Chamber Executive magazine. The award-winning magazine’s circulation is over 6,000 per quarter. It highlighted how the event began and served as a “how-to” manual for conducting a successful non-dues revenue event to the more than 1,150 U.S. Chambers of Commerce that are members of ACCE across North America. We received several phone calls and emails from other Chambers wanting more information on starting their own event. Since we hosted the first bar-becue in 1996, Chambers from Lubbock and Odessa have followed our lead with similar events, and we will soon be meeting with the North Dallas Chamber to pro-vide them with helpful hints to start their own cook-off. Healthcare Cooperative The Chamber is entering the fourth year of the health care initiative. The primary mission of the coop is still to offer cost-effective health care benefits for Chamber business owners. The number of workers with health care coverage is close to 1,000 with an additional 500 dependents being covered. Providing health care coverage has also im-proved their well-being and access to care, giving businesses a competitive edge with a healthy work force. Nearly sixty certified agents offer the United Healthcare insurance products in Amarillo and the surrounding com-munities, including Booker, Dalhart, Friona, Pampa, Herford, Lubbock, Perryton, and Tulia. Over seventy companies have renewed policies and another twenty one companies have signed up for the United Health Care plans under the Amarillo Chamber Health Care Cooperative this year adding more than 400 individuals. This initiative is still providing powerful health coverage solutions for business owners while emphasizing personal responsibility for health care with a focus on wellness and prevention. This year United Healthcare is adding addi-tional products available through the Chamber Coop including a wellness module.

Health plans offered through the Amarillo Chamber Healthcare Cooperative are available to all business owners who are members of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce. Businesses that enroll with UnitedHealthcare through the Chamber will receive a 7% discount on select medical plans and have an option for saving 5% on their bundled dental and vision plans.

UnitedHealthcare offers a broad network of quality, cost-effective physicians and health care professionals in Ama-rillo including Baptist St. Anthony’s and Northwest Texas Hospitals and many other facilities in the region.

The lives covered continues to grow to 1,040 employees in 10 Amarillo businesses that have chosen Amarillo’s Sensible Solution as their coverage for workplace inju-ries. The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce partners with Jack-son-Lloyd Insurance Management to provide “Amarillo’s Sensible Solution”, as an insurance choice for work-place related injuries with lower premium payments and controlled claims costs. The plan protects the busi-ness interests of Chamber member businesses by pro-viding real insurance protection with an affordable pre-mium. A select group of local insurance agents are qualified to

provide information related to three policies available for Chamber member businesses. Amarillo’s Sensible Solution offers three different poli-cies available to chamber members. Each policy con-tains different pricing levels to fit any budget, thereby enabling not only large employers but small employers the ability to choose their desired level of coverage for on-the-job injuries. Business members can be assured that their employee injury claims will be treated by Amarillo hospitals and doctors with quality care that each employee deserves.
