Literacy Week 7 This week we are using the book ‘Moon Man’ by Tomi Ungerer. Do not worry, you do not need the book. However, you can listen to a reading of Moon Man here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jpuo_Y3C2Zo (do not watch it all just yet!) Session 1 - Explore It Carefully read the text below. You can watch the video BUT pause at 1:30minutes! Do not watch it all just yet! Answer the questions, using full sentences, in your yellow exercise books. You can also talk about these with a member of your family if you prefer.

1. What do you think is happening here? 2. Where and when do you think this is set? 3. Do you think what has happened is serious? What makes you think this? 4. What do you think the flaming light could be? 5. What do the words hastened, quench and spectators mean? You could look up the definition

here: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/online-dictionary Have a closer look at the illustrations on the page. Answer the questions below:

1. Who can you see rushing to the scene? 2. What do you think these people expect to find? 3. Do you think the ice cream man will be needed at the scene? Why?

Lastly, write 4-5 sentences predicting what you think this story is about. Start your sentence with ‘I predict…’ SPELLING WORD OF THE DAY: spectator

Session 2 - Illustrate It Read the text from session 1. You can also rewatch the YouTube reading but remember to pause at 1:30mins. The army, police, fire brigade, ice cream man and spectators all rush to a scene (maybe on the next page). What do you think they will find once they get there? What could have caused all the ‘noise’ and the ‘flaming light’? What event requires the army, police etc? Once you have a clear idea in your mind, draw what you see. You can do this in your yellow books, on paper, scrap paper or an old envelope. Think about the colours you may use. Who may you draw? Think about the title of the book. Where will they be? Is it day time or night time? What words or phrases from the text above could you use to help you? SPELLING WORD OF THE DAY: scene Session 3 - Talk About It You can read/ listen to the rest of the book today. I hope you enjoy the book as much as Miss Jackson did :) Today, you are going to be a news reporter! First answer the questions below using full sentences. Try to give as much detail as you can for your reader - I would love to know what you have written!

1. When and where has this event taken place? 2. Describe in detail what has happened. 3. Who has raced to the scene? Why have they rushed to get there? 4. What do you think is going to happen next?

You are now the news reporter. Think of some questions to ask the people at the scene. You could ask: the spectators, the army, ice cream man, the fire brigade, police or the Moon Man. Choose at least 3 different people! You can write these questions down or you could video/ record yourself asking these to someone else. Maybe you could role play over facetime with a friend (e.g. you are the news reporter and they choose a character to play and try to answer the questions in role). You could take turns. E.g. News reporter asking questions to a police officer:

- What has happened? Have you arrested any suspects yet? - How are you going to help ensure the public are kept safe at all times following this?

E.g. News reporter asking questions to a spectator/ eye witness:

- Where were you at the time of the incident? Did you see what happened? (They may have a different perspective to the police officer).

- How did you feel when you saw the collision? - What time did this happen?

Challenge: You could get in role and answer your own questions as each character. Remember, they are all different, have different viewpoints and different roles in the incident. All answers will be different. Try to be as imaginative as you can. SPELLING WORD OF THE DAY: complete Session 4 - Imagine It Moon Man came from the moon which is in space. Imagine that you are an astronaut and are taking an adventure to the moon to visit Moon Man. Did you see the recent rocket be launched into space? It was even visible from London. Maybe you could use this as inspiration? Firstly, you need to design your own space suit.

- What will this look like? What colour will it be? - What material would you use?

Next, design your spaceship/ rocket.

- What colours will you use? Does it have patterns on the outside? - Does it have its own name? - How big is it? What shape? - Does it have any special features?

Lastly, write a short postcard to send back home to a family or friend. Explain, in detail, what your trip to the moon was like. What was Moon Man like? What was it like on the moon? What could you see? You could try and walk like you are on the moon to really imagine you were there! SPELLING WORD OF THE DAY: centre

Session 5 - Create It In session 4 you imagined you were an astronaut in space. Today you are going to draw/ create the solar system. Can you name all the planets? What do they look like? Which is the largest? Which planet is closest to the sun? What planet do we live on? Draw your own solar system featuring all of the planets, and the sun, in the correct order. Here are some examples to help you. (Or you could make a model if you’re feeling very creative!) Can you find any really interesting facts about any of the planets? Is Pluto a planet?

Challenge: Think of your own rhyme/ song/ mnemonic to remember the order of the planets. Challenge 2: Can you use some of the spelling words in your rhyme? Here is one commonly used: SPELLING WORD OF THE DAY: early We would absolutely love to see what you have been up to! Please send in any work you would like to share to Miss Jackson, [email protected], or Mr Howell, [email protected].
