Chalk Talk The New York Times

with

To present a newspaper subscription as being more than unlimitednews access, but also as being empowering and beneficial inunprecedented ways. To inspire students and educators to conveniently and consistentlystay informed through a New York Times digital subscription. To present The New York Times as an interactive publication thatcares to become familiar with and work with its audience.

GOALS

WHAT & WHY?A chalk-talk event allows passersby to engage with the chalkboard and share theirperspectives, contributing to a dialogue with all the people that shared beforehand andall that will share after. In bringing The New York Times to Brandeis by encouraginginteraction with students and educators, The Times is making its name more personal.

The statement posed for this chalk-talk is “I stay informed because...” Not only does itforce people to examine why they stay informed, but it also forces them to examine ifthey stay informed. There will be lines on the board where people will write theirreasons, prompting others to write theirs and learn about new reasons to stay informed.Through this chalk talk, The New York Times demonstrates that a publicationsubscription goes beyond just daily news; it can be personal. Everyone has his ownindividual reasons for staying up to date, and sharing them inspires others to follow suit.

Inspiring people to subscribe would not be complete without showing them how theycan do so. During the event, I will be present to further explain the interactive exhibitand let people know how they can put their ideas into action and receive a discounteddigital subscription. Nobody wants to feel uninformed – especially at a college campus –and this event would remind people that there are easy and affordable ways to stay upto date with The New York Times.

PROMOTIONThis exhibit would sit in the hub of student life on Brandeis' campus, the ShapiroCampus Center. As a prominent and interactive display, it will draw students andeducators in immediately.

Social media is also a powerful way to promote this event. By creating a hashtag for theevent (#NYTChalkTalkDeis) and including it on the actual board, people will feelcompelled to Instagram, Tweet and Snapchat the chalk talk with the hashtag - informingothers. My link (nyt.com/college58) will also be written on the board so that passersbycan quickly find a way to access more information. Additionally, I will make anannouncement of this event in the Brandeis weekly bulletin that is sent out to allstudents.

As The New York Times' collegiate representative at Brandeis, I will be at the eventwearing a New York Times shirt and offering swag to increase legitimacy and appeal(and subscriptions). The New York Times is a trustworthy news outlet that people arefamiliar with, and by giving students swag to wear on campus, word about the event willspread throughout the day.

Helpful LinksThe "Before I Die" project is aworldwide movement that has asimilar style to this event. WhileThe New York Times’ eventwon’t be as permanent or aslarge of an installation, I believeit will have similar effects onpassersby and students byengaging them in an indirect andpublic dialogue.
