The Edge of GloryNew Mexico Highlands is home to some players with famous

relatives. The Cowboys’ starting quarterback, Danny Cameron, is the son

of former NFL and NCAA coach Cam Cameron, who has served multiple stints in both the NFL and NCAA Division I football.

The elder Cameron received a Super Bowl ring for his 2012 season with the Baltimore Ravens .

The other Cowboy player with notable family, is Donte Lynch, whose cousin is Oakland Raider running back Marshawn Lynch, a five-time Pro Bowler, First-team All-Pro in 2012, Second-team All-Pro in 2014, and Super Bowl XLVIII champion.

Marshawn’s brother, Davonte Lynch, led Highlands in 2015 with 735 yards rushing on 152 carries for a per-carry average of 4.8 yards.

Donte has 20 total tackles on the year with two tackles for loss.

Hey Coach The Cowboys are under new guidance for the 2017 season.

Marty Fine, the Cowboys new head coach, has led the team to a record of 2-4 this season. Over the past two years, the Cowboys overall record was a total 2-20.

Before Highlands, Fine coached at Bryant University. When he arrived in 2004, the NCAA Division II football program was just five years into its existence. Nevertheless, Fine led the team to a conference co-championship in his third season, another title in year four, and the program’s first two postseason berths.

In 2008, Bryant began the transition from an NCAA Division II athletics program to a Division I-FCS operation. Fine continued coaching the Bulldogs through the 2016 season, compiling a record of 80-61 at the university.

The NMHU skipper has previous stints on his resume as an assistant at the FBS level, having served on staffs at Indiana University and Iowa State University. Coincidentally, Fine’s football coaching career first got underway in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, across the state at Western New Mexico University as a linebackers coach in 1984.

Protective Instincts Chadron State’s offensive blockers, primarily offensive linemen

Travis Romsa, Matt Barden, Jake Geil, Adam Fuselier, and Jared Maciejczak, have allowed the Eagles’ quarterbacks to operate under minimal pressure so far this season. CSC’s opponents have managed only one sack in six games, earning the Eagles the No. 1 spot in NCAA Division II, for sacks allowed.

CSC Head Coach Jay Long, a former CSC Hall of Fame O-lineman himself, has mentored some elite men in the trenches. Long’s units have finished in the top-20 in DII for sacks allowed three of the five previous seasons, and have been among the top three in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in the category for the entire length of his tenure, averaging barely a sack allowed per contest.

Jay LongHead Coach/Offensive LineSixth Year

2017 - Jay Long has been a rock solid presence in his five years as Chadron State’s head football coach.

The CSC alum is responsible for steadying the program with a focus on tradi-tion, culture, and community, in the midst of Chadron State football’s greatest adversity.

Long’s first year coaching the Eagles, they ended the season as the 18th ranked team in the nation by both the American Football Coaches Association and D2Football.com.

In 2013, the Eagles went 8-3 and finished second in the RMAC, with the No. 1 third-down conversion percentage in the nation. In 2014, CSC wound up third in the RMAC with another 8-3 mark.

In 2016, the Eagles were the top passing defense in the RMAC, allowing only 179.5 yards per game through the air.

In five years, Long, who also serves as the offensive line coach, has coached six all-conference linemen, four All-Americans, a Harlon Hill national finalist, and men-tored All-American and NFL player Garrett Gilkey. His offensive lines have been top 3 in the RMAC in sacks allowed for five consecutive years.

Long is the 25th head football coach at CSC and the third who also played for the Eagles. Orin Weymouth and Ruffus Trapp also played and coached for Chadron State; however, a former football player hasn’t coached for the school since 1937.

Long spent three seasons as the head coach at Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D., where he guided the Yellowjackets to a 15-15 record before coming to Chadron State in 2012. His overall career record, including his time at BHSU, is 39-38.

Prior to being the head coach at Black Hills State, he was an assistant coach at the school from 2003-09. During that time, he served as the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and the strength and conditioning coach. The Yellowjackets won two conference titles and appeared in the NAIA playoffs two times while Long coached the offensive line.

Long, who graduated from Chadron State College in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in science, was a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection at center and also earned Farm Team All-American honors. He also wrestled at heavyweight and qualified for the national tournament for the Eagles.

Long and his wife, Kresi, have three children, Carson, Kaelee and Alivia.
