amazing mini football tournament. We were joined by over seventy villagers. We had 32 players, adults and children so we made four teams, Real Markus, Jack United, Josh Athletic and Simon Rangers all with 8 players each.

hat a great village event! The Neville Patterson football match was held on the evening of Friday 14th July at the football field / Village hall. The sun was out and the conditions were perfect for anW

I would like to say a big thank you to Chloe, Courtney and Phoebe for selling and sorting out the raffle on the evening, and a very special thank you to Mark Slade for helping set up, being referee on the day and much more. Thank you to everybody who came and enjoyed the evening, and those who supplied raffle prizes. It was a great event and we raised £154 for the Seniors Christmas Lunch and had a lot of fun!

'Real' Markus Slade being presented the trophy by Christine Patterson Worthy Runners-Up... Josh Athletic

The final was the best match of the evening with some skilful football by all the players. It was 0-0 at half time and everybody was on the edge of their seats when 30 seconds from the end, Craig Edwards shot the ball into the back of the net to win the Cup for Real Markus. The cup was presented to the winning captain, Markus Slade, by Mrs Patterson.

Real Markus and Jack United started off with a 2-0 win for Real Markus with one goal from Ed and one from Kieran. The next game was Josh Athletic against Simon Rangers, finishing 3-0 to Josh Athletic, Sam scoring two and the other being an own-goal. We then did a play off for third place, Simon Rangers against Jack United which ended 6-0 to Jack United, with an amazing hat-trick from Damian Dumelow.

Chaddleworth Afternoon Club

It was a fine sunny day and we all enjoyed our cream tea and cake in The Potting Shed Cafe. Other attractions were fruit picking, plant and food buying, or walking in the sunshine to the lake. A good afternoon was had by everyone.

There is no meeting in August, so the next date will be Thursday 7th September when we will be back in the Village Hall meeting at 2.30pm. New members are always welcome, so if you are at home in the afternoon please come along and enjoy a cup of tea, home made cake and a good chat with us. A date for your diary is Thursday 5th October when we will have our annual special tea party for Macmillan Cancer Support as our local contribution to their World's Biggest Coffee Morning campaign. Last year we sent Macmillan £305 and I hope we can at least equal that this year. Entrance will be the same as for each meeting which is £1.50p and includes tea, home made sandwiches and cake. There will be home made cakes and books for sale as well as a grand raffle. If you can't come but would like to help us support this great charity please could you make a cake to sell, or donate cash or a raffle prize. This would be much appreciated.

As you may already know Pat and Brian who have been running the Afternoon Club with Christine for nearly 10 years have decided that it is time to stop. We are therefore looking for a volunteer or a small group of to take over the running of the Club with Christine from the New Year. If you would like to get involved please do contact Christine or myself for more information.

The Ibex Signage update Road signs indicating directions to The Ibex are now up on roads surrounding the village.

Dog WasteParish Council ask dog walkers to dispose of your dog’s waste into the appropriate dog waste bins. There are two dog waste bins in the village one being situated next to the village hall, the other at the top of the steps from Main Street leading to the playground. If you are not passing the two bins, then please take it home and dispose of it in your own bin!

If dog waste is placed into public litter bins, it will not be emptied by West Berkshire Council which results in the litter bins overflowing with dog waste, not a nice image next to our War Memorial. (The waste bin at the War Memorial is NOT for dog waste and should not be used as such).Parish Council have chosen not to have an extra expense of a third dog waste bin as this is maintained from the parish precept; (being your council tax).

Thank you for your co-operation.

Village Hall Maintenance DayThere will be the annual maintenance day on Sunday 13th August at 10.30am onwards if anyone can offer help with painting, cleaning, maintenance it would be appreciated. Refreshments will be available.

Great Shefford Under Fives

splashing in the shallow River Lambourn during the hot weather? We really do offer an idyllic outdoor opportunities.

Our trip to Bucklebury Farm Park was great fun; we had a tractor ride to see the deer and were lucky enough to see a baby deer born. We had a tour of the farm animals with a Bucklebury farmer, fed the goats and held pets including a mouse! The weather was perfect and the families had a relaxed opportunity to get to know each other.

We have welcomed teachers from local schools to meet the children who will be joining their Reception Classes in September. The children have also been on visits to schools to make a successful transition to the next stage of learning.

On Saturday 24thJune we held a Dads’ Morning for all dads and grandads to join their children at Pre-School. They were treated to bacon rolls (thanks Angela!) and to see some of the activities and routines which are enjoyed by the youngsters during a normal session. This was a lovely opportunity to meet dads and for the children to show off their learning environment and have fun together.

On Wednesday 12th July a group of Y6 students from Shefford School will visit the Pre-School as a part of their “Enterprise Project” to show their handmade gifts to parents and hopefully raise money for their end of term trip to Cadbury World. This is a wonderful way for the school and pre-school to link and support each other.

The Pre-school staff held promotional stands at both Welford School fete and Chaddleworth village fete which were lovely opportunities to catch up with families who used to attend our group. We are now busy making pictures and collages to display at Great Shefford Horticultural Show and practising our sports skills ahead of the Sports Morning to be held on the last day of term.

If you have a pre-school child and would like to see the opportunities and care we offer, please do call in to visit us or look at our website, www.greatsheffordunderfives.co.uk for further details and contacts.

Obituary - Derrick Lewis Hill - 20th April 1941-16th June 2017

plot of land opposite The Ibex (from a Mr Mason who owned all the land from Box Hedge Cottage to Main Street) where he and his wife Patricia (Paddy) lived in a caravan while their house 'Koh-I-Baba' was built. He lived for a while in Geneva working on the CERN project (an early version of the Large HADRON Collider) for the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory at Chilton as a Specialist Electrician. Derrick's father was a World War 2 bomber pilot and tragically was killed before Derrick was born so he was brought up by his mother and grandparents. They lived in Luton Bedfordshire and he never lost that characteristic accent although he was quite fluent in French which he learnt at school and was invaluable to his work at CERN. After he left the village he went to live with one of his daughters, Tanya, her husband Andrew

t is with great sadness that I record the passing of a real village/community minded man. Derrick came to Chaddleworth in the early sixties and bought a I

and their two daughters in Woodland St. Mary and enjoyed gardening, reading and travelling. His other daughter, Katie, lives in Southport with her husband and two children and he got to know the area well on his many visits there.

Derrick played a great part in Chaddleworth village life and was a very accomplished carol singer and a really good cricket player with 'a lot of ability' as Joe Mills would say. He was a founder Member of the current Club. Last August (at 75 years of age) he played in a match where he went in as opening batsman and was the last man standing. Wayne Lyford, one of the young 'bucks' was apoplectic as wicket keeper and came on to hopefully bowl Derrick out but his worst/best could not shift Derrick. Despite the fact that he had left the village several years ago he continued to be on the Village Hall Committee and always attended the Maintenance Days in mid-summer.

He was present at any and every village event (village dances at Oak Ash Farm, Fetes, Fun Days, road clear-

ups). It was at one of these that we discovered a Village World War 2 tank trap in Mount Lane that is now on display at RAF Welford Museum.

I am proud to have known him and counted him as one of my friends. He was always a man to rely on and I am deeply sad he is no longer with us.
