HAZELBURY HEALTH

PRACTICE We offer Homoeopathy and

Kenshin Anma Shiatsu

Kenshin Anma Shiatsu is a wonderfully relaxing and energising form of massage therapy which is very ancient, predating even Shiatsu, and works to rebalance the entire system. Kenshin means ‘essence of health’, and Anma means ‘spreading peace with the hands’. It is performed fully clothed and lasts 75 minutes. Anma is non-diagnostic and is not recommended for pregnant women or cancer patients.

Laurent and Susan Lacroix hold diplomas in Anma from Anma France. Susan is also

a registered homoeopath and counsellor and offers consultations and sessions.

Every Thursday there will be a Book of Common Prayer Holy Communion Service at 9.45am followed by tea/coffee and cake to which everyone is most welcome.

A question often asked – “Where is the Denys Sargent Room?” When informed of its locality the comment is – “I never knew it was there!”. A new sign has appeared at the front of the Village Hall with directions to the Denys Sargent Room; this small room can be hired independently from the Main Hall itself. For anyone holding a small meeting or an activity with only a few members it is ideal; contact the Hall’s Booking Secretary for availability on 744544. The Committee would like to thank Bob Child for the design of the sign.

Poppy Cascade

Last November we successfully displayed a cascade of poppies in the Market Place for Remembrance Day. There is plenty of room on the netting to place more poppies. If you are not poppied out from last year, perhaps you would like to make more to add to what we have and make an even longer cascade. Please contact me on 01225 742988 if you are willing to make poppies.

Continued on page 11

Continued from the July Parish Magazine It was now that the beachhead was being enlarged; villages which had been fought over several times were now firmly in allied hands even though they were badly damaged. Unfortunately the churches, with their tall towers, were always the first to suffer damage. Our own regiment, part of the 33rd Armoured Brigade, was to take part, with the Canadians, in a night march which was something that we had not done before. The target was some high ground south of Caen which had been fought over before and had resulted in many casualties; the plan was to take it at night. It was some miles to the objective, so the infantrymen were transported in troop carriers. The target had already been reconnoitred by a couple of very brave officers in a Jeep. They said the attack could be successful, so we formed up in four columns and, directed by Bofors guns firing overhead, we headed for the target. Our aim was to take several villages. We were given orders not to stop whatever happened. So, we didn’t and on the way we passed several tanks that had either been hit by enemy shells or had broken down.

In the morning the Germans made a counterattack with their Tiger tanks against ‘A’ squadron. These Tiger tanks were much bigger and better armoured than our Sherman tanks, they weighed 60 tons compared with the Sherman’s 30 tons, and they carried a much dreaded 88mm gun, which was far more powerful than the standard gun that was mounted on a Sherman tank. It was on this occasion that Joe Ekins, who I had got to know when we both joined the 1st Northampton Yeomanry, made a name for himself by destroying three Tiger tanks. I was in ‘B’ Squadron while Joe was in ‘A’ Squadron in which he was the gunner of a Sherman tank that had been fitted with a gun that was significantly larger than the standard Sherman gun; this gun was able to compete with the Tiger’s 88mm gun. I later

Continued from page 9 heard that Joe had seen three Tiger tanks across some open farmland and, in the first action he had experienced, he fired two shots destroying one Tiger tank. After his tank was repositioned Joe fired three further shots and destroyed the remaining two Tigers. One of these tanks was believed to contain the notorious German tank Ace, Michael Wittmann known as the Black Baron, who had reputedly destroyed 138 allied tanks during the war. This action took place at the time when the Americans, under the command of General Patton, were breaking out of the bridgehead and heading south-east towards Falaise in order to trap the Germans who were retreating towards Lisieux and the River Seine.

Grounds for Optimism – Chapter XXVI Bukoba Town, Kagera District, N-W Tanzania, Sunday, 5th February 2017

Apologies to sharp-eyed readers noticing last month´s error. Scots word ‘byre’ is a cowshed. Shame if headmistress’s cow had gone to its end after earthquake on a ‘bier’ – ‘wood frame for carrying dead person to grave’ (Chambers Dictionary). By luck she survived the ordeal and continues to refresh her owner´s cuppa. In Bukoba, Sunday afternoons are for families of all faiths to go to Lake Victoria´s shore. Aerodrome Road runs parallel with the beach. In between, past the Club where I was once the Social Member – curry lunches, bingo, Christmas parties – is a fine stretch of rough open grassland for volleyball, football and assignations. I was surprised to see children swimming in water infested with bilharzia aka schistosomiasis. This nasty tropical parasitic disease is carried by freshwater snails. It gets into the liver and gut and makes you feel tired all the time. The excellent Bradt Guidebook, Northern Tanzania, quotes advice from Drs Stockley of Kampala and Southgate of London´s Natural History Museum: “Dry off thoroughly; rub vigorously”. I doubted the happy splashers were paying much attention. Perhaps the beach being away from habitation was in their favour. We expatriates certainly never swam in Lake Victoria fifty years ago, although my colleague, Mike Wynn, had a dinghy and used a rough towel after each launching. At dusk after a Sabbath-day snooze and safely decamped from Lutheran luxury to budget Banana Lodge, (see map) I went in search of supper. Nearby was Casa Nova nightclub, incongruously next to the Lutheran Cathedral. I recalled the denominational cathedral contest of the sixties, catholic flamboyance competing with protestant single-storey restraint, but knew I had visited neither in my heathen bachelordom. Besides, this Sunday night was well past evensong, or even vesper time and Casa Nova was preparing to show the final of the African Cup of Nations football match. Black African Cameroon was playing North African Arabic Egypt. No love lost there, then. Yet to be switched on, the outdoor TV screens yielded to thumping music. A gibbous moon was high in the sky, lying at what looked to anyone from northern latitudes, like an improbable angle. I ate my plate of plantains, sucked tough ‘real’ meat, sipped pilsner and joined other gents awaiting the kick-off. With the match evenly balanced at 1–1 and ten minutes to play, we groaned as the generator failed and screens went dead. Two minutes later, electricity was restored! Finally, with penalties looming, Cameroon’s sub, Vincent Aboubaker, scored, euphoria erupted and us oldsters danced the night away. My age? 72. Estimated average age of dancers? 74. Average gender of dancers? Definitely male! What a night! Rodney Priest

Another Fine Show The Colerne Show goes from strength to strength, as it celebrates all the skills in this village of gardeners, allotment holders, floral artists, craftspeople, bakers and photographers. The last Friday of July saw a buzz of activity in the Village Hall as the team set up the Show; this was intensified on Saturday as a stream of entries came in. In spite of the weird growing season, the vegetable table was packed (to our relief) and so was the show of flowers and floral art, which amazed our judge – he said he had never seen such beauty as in the cup and saucer and floating flowerheads classes. Above it all hovered Erica’s lovely bunting, picking up the wealth of colour and texture from lush green vegetables and brilliant flowers to a mass of cakes, curds and jams and finely sewn and knitted work, flanked

by photographs on screens and children’s work displayed on the stage. The Hall was filled with people absorbed in looking and chatting and the refreshment room buzzed with conversation, fuelled by Marshfield ice creams. Our three judges were full of praise for the standard of entry – we had many new faces bringing in entries on the Saturday morning, and many new visitors in the afternoon. When 12 o’clock came and the judges

returned their clipboards, they had worked hard: Richard Cripps checking the quality of the flowers and vegetables meticulously, Anne Chapman carefully assessing the craft skills and design quality, and Margaret Dyke bravely tasting everything in the cookery classes, from Victoria Sponges to pickles! They had made their choice – and the Royal Horticultural Society medal for overall excellence in horticulture went to Norma Burgess, whose creative skill also won her the

17 Colerne Parish Magazine, September 2019

Floral Trophy, and her excellence in the vegetable classes, the Peter McLellan Trophy. The Challenge Vase for most points in the Gardening Club’s classes went to experienced and knowledgeable gardener, Sue Reid, and the non-members Challenge Certificate went to Helen Barton. The Fiddlehead Trophy for a miniature garden was won by William Matthews’ wonderful dinosaur garden, using

only plants around at the time of the dinosaurs, and the School’s Diamond Jubilee Cup was won by Imogen Willcox’s sparkling pollinator, displayed with the rest of Year 5’s work and their lovely flower drawings. We couldn’t put the show

on without our wonderful team within the Club, who all rally round. But where would we be without the Village? Our sponsors are vital – this year Lucknam Park, Chippenham Auction Rooms, the Fox and Hounds, Colerne Café and the Flower Shop – thank you! We borrow our tables from Mr and Mrs Agombar via Roger Spirrell and from the Sea Scouts; we have our programmes at the Café and the Post Office and our posters are all around the village, while both are featured online on the Parish Council’s website. Our banners and graphics are designed by Bob Child and put up at the Market Place and School, and this Magazine hosted our raffle coupon. It all peaks on that last Saturday in July – and it IS

all worth it. That’s the day you see the Village Hall bursting with colour and texture, buzzing with people, and full of what people have grown, arranged or made, celebrating not just their own skills but the Village itself. You couldn’t put it better than judge Richard Cripps: “Shows like this are the lifeblood of a village”.

19 Colerne Parish Magazine, September 2019

Reflections Many people, including me, were surprised that the oil tanker Stena Impero, owned by a Swedish firm based in Gothenburg, which on 19th July was boarded and impounded by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, was flying the red ensign and was registered in Great

Britain. It transpired that no member of the crew of this vessel was British. The ship was in fact listed in the UK Ships Register which assures companies, British and foreign, that ‘the UK Ship Register (UKSR) is here to help ensure that your vessels can operate safely giving you a competitive advantage’. Earlier, on 4th July Grace 1, a crude-oil tanker owned by Singapore based Grace Tankers and flying the Panamanian flag of convenience, was impounded by Royal Marines in Gibraltar as it was

suspected that the vessel was conveying oil to Syria in breach of EU sanctions. On 10th July HMS Montrose drove off three Iranian vessels which were attempting to stop a commercial ship British Heritage. On 16th July Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, accused the British of piracy in seizing Grace 1. The impounding of the Stena Impero may therefore be seen to be a reprisal. This situation has arisen mainly because the US administration has unilaterally rescinded its part of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, while the EU, including for now the UK, has vowed to maintain the deal. The statement by UK Ship Register that member companies are helped to ensure their vessels can operate safely under the Red Ensign, would surely indicate to those companies that the UK has the wherewithal to back up this assurance. The implication is, therefore, that the Royal Navy has enough naval resources to assure protection of British flagged ships. A comparison of the numbers of aircraft carriers, destroyers and frigates available to the Royal Navy in 2019 with the figures for 1982/83, when the Falklands campaign was mounted, is disturbing. In 1982 there were two operational aircraft carriers, complete with tried and tested Harrier VTOL aircraft. Now there is one aircraft carrier completed and another under construction. US procured F35 Lightning aircraft have been purchased at great expense, but no details of when they will be operating from HMS Queen Elizabeth have been announced. In 1982 there were 12 destroyers. Today there are six, of which two are undergoing refit and two are in maintenance, leaving two active. In 1982 we had 43 frigates. Today we have 13, of which six are undergoing refit, leaving seven active (Figures published in the Times). As a comparison, the French Navy has one nuclear powered aircraft carrier, 10 destroyers (three air-defence and seven anti-submarine), and 11 frigates (five general purpose and six surveillance). In 2019 there are 25,700 officers and ratings serving in the Royal Navy, including 2960 women. The average age for Royal Navy and Marine personnel is 32. In 1982 there were 73,000 personnel in the Royal Navy.

21 Colerne Parish Magazine, September 2019

As at 2014 there were 36,776 personnel serving in the French Navy. In December 2010 the British Government decided to dispose of the Harrier, the so-called ‘jump jet’ (pictured), although the latest mark of the aircraft could have performed useful service if it had been continued in service. After denying that Harriers surplus to requirement would be sold to the United States, 72 of these aircraft were, in fact, sold to the US Marine Corps in 2011. In 2013 HMS Ark Royal, last of the

light aircraft carriers and flag ship of the Royal Navy’s fleet, was sold for ‘re-cycling’ to a Turkish contractor. This fine ship could have continued to supply Britain’s carrier capability equipped with the latest Harrier version until the Queen Elizabeth was properly up and running. It seemed that economies in defence were more important than capability. Continued economies in defence capability across the board have led in recent years to British armed forces being stretched in order to cope with the operational tasks that have been taken on by successive governments. We have become used to ministers boasting how “our armed forces punch above their weight” in their efforts to account for this. Things have not been helped by there being three secretaries of defence and three foreign secretaries since 2015. It certainly cannot be said that they have punched above their weight. Meanwhile, HMS Montrose continues to patrol the Straits of Hormuz and do her best to protect ships flying the red ensign, poor Mrs Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe still languishes in jail in Iran, and British ministers “turbo-charge preparations for a no-deal Brexit”. Doesn’t it make you proud to be British?

Charity for the Month This is the last month when we can support the work of MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship). This Charity has been in operation for over 70 years, performing medical evacuations as well as flying in aid.

Without 999, no doctors and no medicine, how would many cope without MAF? A display can be found at the back of Church and the Charity Stall at the next Saturday Market will be in aid of this. Margaret Edmonds

Contacts: [email protected] Chair – Jane Mellett, 01225 742163 [email protected] www.colerne-pc.gov.uk/neighbourhood-plan

The Neighbourhood Plan process is now approaching formal consultation with you, the public. Our aim is to launch the first formal consultation soon after the New Year (but we have learnt that there always seems to be another obstacle around the corner!). Currently we are writing the key policies that stem from all our evidence gathering. We also have an evolving Concept Statement for the MoD sites, for whenever they are disposed of. We have meetings planned with the MoD and Wiltshire Council officials for early October to fine-tune these proposals. This will be a core evidence paper in the Neighbourhood Plan. Do have a look at our completed work that is always put on the Parish Council website (details above). The Steering group would like to commend the new Community Led Housing Group that is planning to launch with a public meeting on 15th October. (More details to follow next month). Although this group is independent of both the Neighbourhood Plan and the Parish Council, if it can receive sufficient public support, it is the only way currently to guarantee that truly affordable homes can be provided in a rural community. They have a goal of 200 members from this Parish. Jane Mellett

Report of the Colerne Pilot Foodbank Project. We feel the project has been worthwhile and hope we can continue with the three agencies providing vouchers, and our weekly delivery of donations from Colerne News collection box to the CCFB on Tuesdays or Saturdays by our team of volunteers. We intend to return the emergency food bags to St Aldhelm’s CCFB at the beginning of September; all items will still be in date and can be used by their clients. We will discontinue using a separate emergency mobile phone, we are indebted to Martyn Peel for providing and paying for the monthly rental fee. Our thanks to the team of people who have administered the emergency mobile phone and maintained the emergency food stock in the village. We wish to thank the School and the School Garden team for storage of the supplies. Corsham Churches Foodbank Vouchers will continue to be available at the Three Shires Surgery 742028, the Firs Surgery 736600 and from Revd Janet Anderson MacKenzie 744458, or direct from Corsham Foodbank 07788 115095. Provision for next winter’s Foodbank emergency provision in Colerne will be monitored and set up if needed. The ‘Little Larder’ in the south porch of the Church will continue to be stocked and checked monthly.

Circumstances beyond my control meant that the August Tramp could not be reported, giving me an opportunity to continue with Tales from My Garden. Just when things were maturing and new life emerging, catastrophe struck. Nature can be very cruel at times and I witnessed Mrs Blackbird, who with guiltless guile, plucked water snails from my pond and bashed them open on the path prior to eating them. However, for seconds she made a lightning strike at a beautiful dragonfly whose wings were skilfully stripped off and the rest was downed with relish. This was now too much for me and I just had to shoo her away. I wonder what other creatures have learnt that the pond is a concentrated food source, so my time-lapse camera is set at the pond side to collect the evidence. On my car I mistakenly thought there was a bird dropping and was about to wash it

away when I realised that it was a Buff-tip moth. I managed to save it by carefully transferring it to the adjacent cherry tree where it spent some time perfectly and safely disguised, blending in against the tree bark. Its extraordinary shape is achieved when it wraps its wings around itself. Walking around the garden I still have the very pleasing sight of hedgehog poo and I have seen mice active under the bird table feeding on the seed spillage. I have had to fence in the table itself to prevent demolition raids by jackdaws, pigeons and magpies, whose raucous behaviour keeps away my favourite goldfinches. Our next Tramp will be on 3rd September. Each Tramp is different and we always walk at an enjoyable pace, starting and finishing at the Fox; the departure time is 10.00am. Sensible attire and a mid-walk ‘munchie’ are essential.
