    from prison and su**eeds in seeing /aria Clara alone- e begins toreproa*h her be*ause it is a letter 2ritten to her before he 2ent to

    Europe 2hi*h forms the basis of the *harge against him) but she *lears

    herself of trea*her! to him- The letter had been se*ured from her b!

    false representations and in e?*hange for t2o others 2ritten b! her

    real father- These letters had been a**identall! dis*o+ered in the

    *on+ento b! ,adre Sal+i) 2ho made use of them to intimidate the girl

    and get possession of 'barra&s letter) from 2hi*h he forged others

    to in*riminate the !oung man- She tells him that she 2ill marr! the

    !oung Spaniard) sa*rifi*ing herself thus to sa+e her mother&s name

    and Capitan Tiago&s honor and to pre+ent a publi* s*andal) but that
