The CGTA was developed in 1997 as a Western based organization, undertaking research and industry development projects with the assistance of BC and Alberta and the Product Club program of the CTC. With the expansion to Ontario, Quebec and later PEI, and with the assistance of a marketing partnership from the CTC, it developed a strong national marketing program in the US and internationally, focusing on creating awareness for Canada as an international golf destination. Over the past 3 years, the CGTA has been successful in helping grow the golf tourism sector in Canada, to the extent that a recent estimate of golf marketing activity through provincial programs exceeds $3 million in 2007.
The CGTA focuses on the US and international markets, where provinces individually are less able to function, and where a coordinated “Canada” message needs to be placed in the market. On the international stage, Canada lags other international destinations in awareness of the quality of the golf product and our industry generally is less able to sell golf product on the international market. The CGTA will focus on 2 key elements in these markets – developing travel trade relationships and unpaid media activities to build awareness.
Vision of the CGTACanada will rank as one of the top ten golf destinations in the world, known for its product quality, good value and scenic backdrops. In the next 5 years, two other Canadian destinations (along with BC in 2006) will be recognized by IAGTO as the top North American Resort Destination, contributing to the broader recognition of Canada in the international marketplace.
Mission of the CGTAThe CGTA plays the lead role in marketing and selling Canada in the highly competitive international golf travel market. The CGTA works with its member courses, regions, provincial tourism partners and the CTC to increase awareness of Canadian golf through unpaid media programs and by providing a ‘first point of contact’ website. The CGTA helps to establish linkages between the international travel trade and Canadian based receptive and inbound operators, and individual courses and resorts. The CGTA also provides research and cooperative marketing opportunities for members.
