CFC Annual Benefit Concert 2011 Alison Krauss & Union Station
TABLE OF CONTENTSEven a vigorous downpour and record-breaking heat didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the more than 3,000 people who gathered at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion on Saturday, July 30, to enjoy a performance by renowned bluegrass ensemble Alison Krauss & Union Station. After a lively opening set by Americana band Dawes, Alison and band members Dan Tyminski, Ron Block and Jerry Douglas took to the stage. Set against a background of sepia-tone photographs of the 1930s, the band performed songs from their newly-released album Paper Airplane. Alison’s ethereal voice and extraordinary fiddle playing hung in the humid air mesmerizing the audience. Following an incredible Dobro solo by Jerry Douglas, singer-guitarist Dan Tyminski performed his bluegrass hit “Man of Constant Sorrow” from the 2000 film, O Brother Where Art Thou.
Thanks to the generous support of concert sponsors and ticket purchasers, this concert raised $120,000 for the CFC. More than 80 people, foundations and businesses purchased sponsor packages ranging from $500 to $10,000. The sponsors who gathered at the Key Recreation Center before the concert were transported to a rustic country garden party created by the team at Easton Events with contributions from Blue Ridge Light Forms, Floral Images, Festive Fare and Skyline Tent Company. Harvest Moon Catering provided an array of delicious hors d’oeuvres served by wait staff who donated their time for the event. Tastings Wine Shop and Virginia Eagle Distributing provided a selection of wine and beer. Lively bluegrass music was provided by the Liza Bance Band. Lining the walls were retrospective posters created by Payne, Ross & Associates highlighting each of the CFC’s eight benefit concerts—Bruce Hornsby at Cabell Hall, the Indigo Girls at the MLK Performing Arts Center, Emmylou Harris at the Paramount and Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion. Gordie Croll from Cavalier Reporting created a concert retrospective video, which played on a large screen television loaned by Crutchfield.

Fall 2011
(1,034% increase in patients served and 980% increase in visits) we still carry a waiting list of 351 people. Our dental volunteers are doing more than they ever have (319% increase in dental volunteer hours), but more is needed. For that reason we have hired Dr. Daniel Vacendak and Dental Assistant Mona Thompson on a short-term basis to supplement the work of our dental staff and volunteer dentists — specifically to decrease the wait time of patients in acute pain. Welcome to everyone who has joined our team: Daniel Vacendak, DDS, Mona Thompson, dental assistant, Jean Burke, receptionist, and Yoshie Perez, patient services coordinator.
You will be hearing from us again in the next several weeks. Our annual fund drive letters will be mailed in October, another reason we need to thank you: for your ongoing support. And shortly after that, you will receive our FY2011 annual report, which highlights all that your donations and volunteer support made possible. This year we will be posting our volunteer and donor names on our website. With the extensive numbers of each (a high quality problem) we are attempting to reduce costs by publishing the 2,000+ names just once a year in print and posting a cumulative list annually on our website. If you prefer not to be listed, please let us know.
One final note, the CFC opened its doors in September 1992 in the Macgregor Motors building on West Main Street. At that time, health care reform was first being discussed and the founding board of directors hoped that the need for the CFC’s services would be brief. Twenty years have passed, health care reform is further along than ever before and yet the demands for the CFC’s services are greater than ever. Throughout 2012 we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary and making plans to continue to fill in the health care gaps for our neighbors in need. We’ll share more details about anniversary events and initiatives in our spring issue of House Call.
This newsletter is filled with appreciation—for the events that are the cornerstone of our fundraising efforts, for the new additions to our staff team, for the donors that contribute generously and for the programs that our volunteers make possible. It feels like so much good happens at the CFC every day that we could share and show our gratitude much more frequently than we can produce a newsletter. One more way we are showing the community what you make possible is through regular postings on our new Facebook page. Please “like” us on Facebook to be linked in to “shout-outs,” special information and event postings. If you like us by December 16, 2011, you will be entered for a drawing for an overnight stay at the Inn at Court Square.
With appreciation comes obligation. Whether you are a donor, volunteer or community partner, one way we extend our thanks is by being good stewards of your donation, whatever it may have been. An example of this includes not only marshalling resources to maximize services, but also realizing when more are needed. While our dental program has experienced continuous growth over the last five years,

The success of this year’s concert and the concert series is the result of our community’s commitment to ensuring that health care services are available for people without health insurance or financial resources. From our generous sponsors and the businesses that provided pro bono services listed below, to the people who bought tickets, to the volunteers who distributed programs, managed sponsor parking and manned the concession stands, this concert series has allowed the CFC to raise funds so we can better serve our patients and increase public awareness of the clinic. Alison Krauss & Union Station are a tough act to follow, but we’re looking forward to hosting another concert next spring or summer. Stay tuned for more details!

Thanks to generous support from sponsors and participants, and the hard work of the tournament committee, the 2011 NAIFA-CV Charity Golf Tournament was a resounding success raising a record-breaking $28,000 for the CFC. This year’s tournament was held for the first time at Glenmore Country Club. On a beautiful—and quite blustery—spring day, 28 teams tackled Glenmore’s 18-hole par 72 championship golf course. Late in the afternoon the golfers, joined by their spouses and guests, enjoyed drinks and delicious hors d’oeuvres in Glenmore’s ballroom while they perused an enticing display of silent auction items including vacation homes, travel packages, winery tours, golf packages, jewelry and gift certificates from local restaurants. The reception was followed by an informal seated dinner and live raffle. June & Herb Craddock were the winners of a Buffalo Wings Party donated by Mark Moser of BuffWings.com. Jack Lindgren won the Sony flat-screen television donated by Crutchfield. After dinner, Glenmore’s golf pro Jack Snyder announced the winners of the tournament. The team of Clyde Smith, Brandt Dixon, Buster Taylor and Jimmy Zeeff took first place in Division I. The Division II winner was the Chamberlin Edmonds team from Atlanta. First place in the Women’s Division were Elizabeth Ewing, Ruth Conlon, Mary Van Miller and Cathy Haney. Nick Little and Amy Ellerton were recognized as winners of the Longest Drive contest. Winners of the Closet-to-the-Pin contest were Mike Ashby, Brandt Dixon, Jack Lindgren and Paul Manning.
The CFC is very grateful for the many businesses and individuals who supported the tournament, particularly Glenmore Country Club; Gold Sponsors US Joiner, UVA Health System and The Village at Gordon House; Silver Sponsors Craddock Insurance Services, Bio-Cat and Reines Jewelers; and Media Sponsor Charlottesville Newsplex. Many thanks also to Custom Management Group. CMG volunteers solicited silent auction items, planned the display and coordinated silent auction bidding and checkout resulting in net proceeds of $8,000.

Everyone knows of the negative health consequences of smoking, but what does it take to quit? It takes resolve, information, coping skills and most importantly, encouragement and support.
To help more members of our community Live & Breathe Easy, the Charlottesville Free Clinic is offering a Quit Smoking Support Group twice a year, co-sponsored by Martha Jefferson Hospital and the UVA Health System. Retired thoracic surgeon and CFC board member Dr. Tom Daniel and the CFC Nurse Practitioner, Barrie Carveth, facilitate the group. The group is free and open to anyone in the community. The group meets weekly on Thursday nights from 5:30-6:30 for 12 weeks. The meetings feature a speaker on a topic
We’re helping our community “Live & Breathe Easy”
For insulin-dependent diabetics to maintain a good quality of life, they must test their blood sugar level on a regular basis, use the proper dosage of insulin and be alert for new symptoms. Without good control of their disease, diabetics risk damage to their eyes, kidneys and cardiovascular system. Diabetic patients can be “non compliant” with their daily insulin regulation for different reasons including lack of understanding about the disease and denial. Research has shown that close monitoring and support provided by a health care professional can significantly improve symptoms and help to prevent further damage.
With support from a multi-disciplinary team, the CFC has launched a new program for insulin-dependent CFC patients. Fannie Rankin-Vinci (Diabetic Educator) and Sam Dittrich (long time volunteer and graduate MPH student at Emory University) worked with CFC Patient Care Manager Christine Worsham to adapt the Long Acting Insulin Protocol currently used at UVA for a free clinic setting. Through the CFC Insulin Titration Program, diabetic patients are referred to the program by an endocrinologist and matched with a trained medical student. The medical students will talk
CFC launches new program for diabetic patientswith their assigned patients weekly to monitor their symptoms and adjust their insulin dosage as needed. They will also track hemoglobin A1C levels and other lab values to evaluate how well the patient is responding to treatment. The program will be evaluated at 3, 6, 9 and 12-month intervals. The evaluation will include: tracking of HA1C levels and blood pressure readings, patient satisfaction, physician input and review of patient retention and participation. We expect that other measures will be identified and added to the evaluation process.
UVA endocrinologists Jessicah Collins, MD, and Tony McCall, MD, have volunteered to oversee the program along with the CFC’s volunteer medical directors. Medical students will be trained to work with patients. Dr. Collins facilitated an orientation session in late June for 12 medical students, staff and volunteers helping with the program. Patients are recommended for the program after they’ve seen one of the CFC’s volunteer endocrinologists.
Currently, there are 10 patients enrolled in the program. We are very excited about the program and the opportunity it will provide to improve the lives of our diabetic patients and familiarize medical students with the complexity of caring for diabetic patients.

Dr. Tom Daniel co-facilitates the CFC’s Quit Smoking Support Group with CFC Nurse Practitioner Barrie Carveth. related to smoking cessation. Participants discuss
their challenges with quitting smoking, share ways to cope with the struggle and set short and long term individual goals. During the last two sessions, 11 people quit smoking—a 39% success rate!
The fall session will end on November 17. People are invited to join the group at anytime. The next 3-month session will start in March 2012.
Please help us get the word out in the community about this much-needed program. If you are an employer, we would be happy to provide a poster for your employee bulletin board or flyers. If you are a health care provider, please recommend this program to your patients.
For more information contact, Dr. Tom Daniel at 465-1851 or Barrie Carveth at 295-0008 or [email protected].
Thank You CFC Supporters! The Charlottesville Free Clinic would not exist without financial support from the community. We are very grateful for the generous individuals, foundations, businesses, churches, public funders and civic organizations who provide ongoing support for the CFC with donations, grants, participation in fundraising events or pro bono goods and services. Thank you for helping the CFC ensure that we can continue to meet the health care needs of the low-income uninsured families who live or work in the greater Charlottesville/Albemarle community.
