Application example:Integration of a Sword Brush to clean the lower deviation roller within an accumulator tower (stainless steel coil material reservoir)

Cleaning of rollers with Sword Brushes

Sword Brushes for cleaning rollers are available in with different motor positions. Cylindrical steel rollers, rubberized rollers and profiled rollers may be cleaned. Brushes with harder or softer brush filaments may be selected dependent on the type of contamination.

When using harder brush filaments (e.g. to remove pimples), it is recommended to combine them with a pressurised cushion. This combination allows removal of the pimples whilst permitting a gentle brushing of the rest of the surface.

Table of Sword Brush versions

Same version as in 3 However, the motor is positioned above the Sword Brush.

Standard Sword Brush. In most cases, it may be used to clean rollers, flat surfaces or conveyor belts.

Graphical description of the pressurised cushion (shown as a red ellipse). The buffer provides a

constant wiping force and compensates for ripples or differences in the material’s thickness.

It may also be used as a short lifting stroke.

Sword Brushes are available for nominal widths between 300 to 3200 mm. The motor may be mounted in different positions, a great variety of different linear (wiping) brushes are at your disposal. Sword Brushes equipped with a pressurised cushion allow pneumatic adjustment of the wiping force. This Sword Brush also has a short stroke of approximately 3 mm.

Same version as in 1 However, the motor is positioned above the Sword Brush.

Sword Brush with pressurised cushion (small arrows). The cushion allows control of the wiping force of the brush and keeps it at a constant level. A short stroke of approx. 3 mm is possible.

The suction removes the particles from the linear brush at the deviation area.

Roto racks and blowing nozzles enhance this self-cleaning process. In most cases, a

sprayer micro-moistens the brush afterwards (Ingromat system). This increases the

cleaning effect considerably where electrostatic or very fine dust particles

need to be removed. The subject material remains dry.

Sword Brush with height adjustment

Sword Brush with adjustment frameNormally, the Sword Brush and the adjustment frame are integrated into existing production lines. The adjustment frame allows a simple adjustment of the brush to suit the material.

Sword Brush BIQ 46..In most cases, the standard version of the Sword Brush BIQ 46.. can be used (see page 7). This Sword Brush functions with the Ingromat system (see back of brochure).

Adjustment frame VE 46 and VE 40For normal applications, an adjustment frame VE 46 with a guide shaft diameter of 25 mm suffices. For larger nominal widths (> 2000 mm) or harsh production environments, we recommend an adjustment frame VE 40 with a shaft diameter of 40 mm.

Pneumatic quick adjustmentAn adjustment frame has mechanical adjustment as standard. Electrical adjustments may be ordered as an additional feature. In some cases, a pneumatic quick adjustment is necessary to rapidly remove the machine from the surface, e.g. if the production line is stopped, for threading up, for surface anomalies, irregularities or for crash situations.

Double-sided cleaning of thin and narrow (≤ 1500 mm) steel coils

Three rubber rollers steady the coil that comes from the unwind and guide it towards the Sword Brushes for double-sided cleaning. Afterwards, the coil will continue towards the levelling rollers. The cleaning process prevents the particle contamination which, in turn, would lead to defects in the material surface.

The adjustment frame VE 46.. (guide shaft diameter 25 mm) and the adjustment frame VE 40.. (guide shaft diameter 40 mm) accommodate two Sword Brushes that may be adjusted individually. This feature allows an easy adjustment to the pass-line and a precise setting of the brush pressure.

Double Sword Brush with height adjustment

Brief description of application De-coiled material normally passes through levelling rollers. These small rollers must be free from contaminating particles otherwise, marks or damage will occur on the material surface. It is, therefore, sensible, to clean the coil from both sides. This applies for highly finish stainless steel surfaces, as well as galvanised surfaces in the automobile industry (skin body parts).

Solution for narrow metal coilsTwo Sword Brushes, type BIQ 46, wipe either towards the left or the right hand coil edge. The filament diameters are either 0.15 or 0.2 mm. At the suction area, the self-cleaning devices (roto-racks and compressed air driven blowing nozzles) detach the particles from the brush. The central suction system or a special suction filter collects the particles. The Double Sword Brush may clean either dry or slightly oily surfaces. The Sword Brushes may be adjusted to the material’s thickness via the adjustment frame. The adjustment frame VE 46 is for regular and light applications, the adjustment frame VE 40 is for harsher environments.

Height and thickness adjustments The upper and the lower cleaning modules may be adju-sted mechanically via a crank. In some cases, a pneumatic quick adjustment is recommended. This permits rapid raise and lower of the upper and lower module by 25 or 50 mm.

Variant when cleaning blanksIf a Double Sword Brush is integrated between two conveyor belts, blanks may be cleaned from above and below. The mass of the blanks must be sufficient to ensure that they are not stopped or displaced by the wiping force of the brushes (see also page 20)

The above photo shows an application where two pairs of Sword Brushes are installed one behind the other. These serve to clean both dry and slightly oily surfaces. In this specific case, high-gloss, dry surfaces are cleaned with the Ingromat micro-moistening system. This arrangement has been successfully specified for applications in the medical sector.

Double-sided cleaning of coils

The Cevomat 460/A is available both for narrow and wide (approx. 2000 mm) coils. Normally, there are guide plates at the infeed. However, they may be installed at the infeed and at the outfeed of the machine if the customer also reverses the drive direction.

If coils are larger than 650 mm, the Cevomat is also available with 4 Sword Brushes that wipe in opposite directions. One pair of Sword Brushes wipes from the left edge towards the right edge of the coil, the other pair wipes in the opposite direction. All Sword Brushes have a pressurised cushion, to effectively clean wavy surfaces.

The Cevomat-Cleaner is similar to the Sword Brushes that are described on pages 10 and 11. However, the Cevomat Cleaner has a protective frame and guide plates next to the Sword Brushes. This design is used for applications where uneven coil ends need to be processed. During the threading process, the Sword Brushes may be raised/lowered so that they are not damaged.

Page 13: Cevomat Sword Brush™ micro-cleaning of metallic coils, blanks…€¦ ·  · 2015-09-10micro-cleaning of metallic coils, blanks, rollers metallic foils ... Integration of a Sword

13

Cevomat 460/A with 2 and 4 Sword Brushes

Brief description of applicationCoils or large blanks need to be cleaned from above and from below. In some cases, wavy surfaces need to be cleaned before the levelling rollers.

It also may happen that an endless steel strip with sharp edges and small burrs needs to be cleaned.

Sometimes the beginning or the end of a coil needs to be transported through the cleaning installation. Frequently the end of the coil has sharp edges and parts that are bent.

Possible solutionsFor simple geometric cases, we recommend the Cevomat Cleaner, type 460/A, with an adjustment frame VE 40 and two Sword Brushes BIF 46/1. Here, wiping takes place from edge to edge. Both Sword Brushes wipe in the same direction. In this case, there is a single suction at the right or left hand side of the material.

Cleaning middle-to-edgesFour Sword Brushes are integrated in this case. They have a pressurised cushion and do not wipe across the coil edge. They start wiping the surface just short of the edge area. The pressurised cushion allows a more effective cleaning of wavy surfaces. Brush filaments will only be deformed very slightly thus having a maximum cleaning effect.

Height adjustment HVM..Upper and lower Sword Brushes are adjusted mechanically with respect to the pass line.

Pneumatic quick adjustment HVP..Here, the upper and the lower Sword Brush may be raised/lowered clear of the material surface pneumatically. This needs to be done if the end of a coil has to be transported through the cleaning module. In their raised/lowered position, the cleaning modules are sheltered by guards and guide plates.

Double-sided cleaning of very wavy, thin steel strips

Cevomat Cleaner 550/A(A = nominal width = maximum strip width + ≥ 300 mmThe Cleaner has 4 Sword Brushes, that are available in the standard version or with a flexible contact area. Wiping direction is from edge to edge. The brushes, however, start wiping the surface just short of the edge area. They may thus effectively clean even sharp-edged steel strips.

This photo shows the double-sided cleaning of a stainless steel strip after an annealing furnace. At the infeed and outfeed, there are pairs of rub-ber rollers that smooth the steel strip. The rollers may also be arranged in an adjustable version (option).

Brief description of applicationVery wavy steel strips need to be cleaned from above and from below. The particles removed stem from cutting processes, abrasion or from the annealing procedure (deposits on the surface, e.g. on stainless steel).

Possible solutionTwo pairs of rollers (at the infeed and outfeed) smooth the steel strip. Between the rollers there is a cleaning assembly consisting of four Sword Brushes with flexible pressurised cushions for each contact areas. The rollers at the infeed and outfeed and the Sword Brushes may be adjusted pneumatically. This feature also serves to adapt the pressure of the rollers to the specific material requirements.

StandardFor simple applications, the Cevomat cleaning modules consist of two Sword Brushes that wipe from edge to edge (wiping direction 1).

Cevomat 770/A with cleaning modules BIT 140..

Brief description of applicationLarge steel strips must be cleaned on both surfaces before the skin pass mill or before the levelling rollers. Occasionally, steel strips with a thickness of 5 mm need to be transported safely through the cleaning unit.

Proposed solutionA solid welded construction with integrated cleaning modules BIT 140.. is the ideal solution here. The cleaning modules have special brush filaments with a length of 32 mm and wipe from the centre of the strip to the edges. At the infeed, before the material reaches the brushes, these modules have a so-called High-Speed-Channel. This channel can be activated if there are small bits of paper or other two-dimensional contaminations on the surface. The rollers at the infeed and outfeed (in pairs) may be adjusted pneumatically; as can the cleaning modules.

Options Driven transport roller at the infeed for lower surface. This roller may be declutched.

The Cevomat 770/A has a wide variety of adjustable elements (rollers, cleaning modules etc). In most cases, the first, lower roller is driven and may be declutched if necessary.
