Lighting is a vast topic! Do you know how high to hang your chandelier? Or

how large it should be?

In this article, I have tried to focus on some practical points for the everyday home owner with tips and suggestions for making lighting work in your home to its full potential.

ChandeliersLet’s start with the most asked question…what is the correct size and correct height to hang my chandelier?

Well, it depends on where you

hang it, but here are some general rules. In a dining room with 8"ceilings, most experts say that a chandelier should be hung so that the bottom of it is about 30" above the table. For higher ceilings add 3" to the height for every extra foot of ceiling height.

In foyers, hang the chandelier so that the bottom is at least 7" from the floor. If your ceiling is less than 7" you do not have enough height to hang a chandelier in your foyer. For a very high ceiling, choose a larger chandelier and hang it so that two-thirds of the height of the room is below the chandelier.

When a ceiling is two stories tall, use a foyer chandelier that is composed of two or three tiers for the best visual results. It also makes sense that the higher the ceiling the taller the foyer chandelier should be (it will look more balanced). For every foot of foyer height, allow 2 to 3 inches of fixture height. For a foyer with a 10-foot-high ceiling, that means choosing a chandelier of between 20 and 30 inches in height. If you have a high window in your foyer, you may want to take advantage of it and place the chandelier so that it can be seen from the outside.

Lightingtips for the

Lighting experts also offer the following formula to calculate electrical wattage adequate to light your foyer space. Multiply room length by width by 1.5. Accordingly, a room measuring 8 feet by 10 feet would require 120 watts of light (8 x 10 = 80, and 80 x 1.5 = 120). Size (diameter) of the chandelier is just as important. A couple of methods can be used to determine this:

1. Add the length and width of the room together…change the result you get to inches and that is the correct diameter of light to use in that room. Eg. If your dining room is 12X14, the diameter should be 26 inches. (12 + 14 = 26).

2. In a dining room, the diameter of the chandelier should be at least half the width of the dining table.

Table LampsUse smaller accent lamps on a small accent or side table and a larger lamp on larger table. If the side table is placed next to a chair, sit on the chair and make

sure that bottom of the shade doesn’t fall higher than eye level. Bedside table lamps are usually best at a height of 29" If a bedroom is very large and has large bedside tables, you can use a larger lamp, both in width and height. Many table lamps made for desks are shorter and have a swing arm to help direct the light where needed. CNS Lighting recommends that a desk lamp be 16"above the surface and 13" from the front of the desk. Buffet lamps are usually between 28 and 32 inches tall. They are often displayed in pairs and are used in many places throughout the home such as on a buffet, sideboard or an entryway table. Generally, these lamps have long narrow necks and small shades. They do not take up too much room but provide low level lighting in small rooms or small areas. They also make good bedside lamps for reading, etc. Just make sure the size/height of the lamp is proportionate to the size of the table they are placed on.

Wall sconces

Wall Sconces can be used in any room as well as outside. Experts say to hang sconces 6 feet from the floor if you have an 8"ceiling

height. If the ceiling is higher or if it is a large room, use larger sconces to match the proportions of the room. Outdoor entry sconces should be 6-8" on either side of the door and 18" from the top of the door. Generally speaking, mount them at three quarters of the height of the door…eg. for a door that is 8"tall, place the light 6" from the ground.

Recessed (pot) lighting

Recessed lighting or pot lights provide a clean and streamlined look and opens up a space making it look bigger and brighter. They are very versatile and are commonly used in kitchens, but can be used in any room because they are very un obstrusive. How many and how far apart depends on the size of the room, the size and intensity of the bulb and the amount of desired light. Six-inch fixtures are best used in large areas such as two- story hallways and entryways. Smaller 4"and 5"bulbs are better suited to smaller areas. Generally speaking, 4" lights should be placed 4" apart and 6" lights 6" apart. In a kitchen place the lights at least 12 inches from the face of the cabinets.

Vanity lightingVanity lights in bathrooms should be placed about 75" from the floor. The mirror should be about 75% of the width of the vanity and the light should be about 75% of the mirror width.

These tips are helpful to transform any room. Follow

these pointers to ensure your space looks evenly balanced

while getting an appropriate amount of lighting.

It is estimated that the livelihood of about 25 crore people is linked to domestic trade, which is growing at about 15 per cent every year. The Labour Ministry recently notified a pension scheme for retailers and traders with beneficiaries eligible for a monthly pension of ₹3,000 after the age of 60 at a small monthly contribution. The scheme is expected to benefit over three crore self-employed workers in the country.

Govt reaches out to peeved traders; notifies ‘National Welfare Board’

Proposed body should have ‘teeth’, say stakeholders

In a bid to appease the trading community that is unhappy with the presence of foreign players

in single-brand retail and e-commerce, the government has notified setting up of a ‘National Traders Welfare Board’ to identify policy measures, including offering social security benefits and ensuring access to funds, for traders and their employees. The board will be headed by a senior official from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and include members of retailers’ associations and experts in the field, a government official said.

“The main objectives of the board include suggesting simplifications of rules, reducing compliance burden on traders, improving access to funds and making recommendations on social security benefits like insurance, pension and healthcare for both traders and their employees,” the official added.

While traders are optimistic about the board providing a stable link between the trading community and the government, they underline the need for it to have teeth.

“The traders’ welfare board should not just be a decorative body. It needs to be adequately empowered to deal with issues in a holistic manner. It should have some control over respective departments so that decisions are taken,” said Praveen Khandelwal, National Secretary General, Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).

National survey : According to Khandelwal, one of the first things that the board should do once it is constituted is to conduct a national survey of the trading community. “There has never been a survey of traders. The government should find out what is the actual size of the community and what are the core issues before

Tower that cleans OUTDOOR AIR

Latest Technology Inventions

Get together on Diwali at CETA Office

The latest technology invention in environmental pollution is a tower that cleans outdoor air. The Tower is a seven-metre (23

feet) high structure that removes ultra-fine particles from the air using a patented ion-technology developed by scientists at Delft University of Technology. In California, where residents suffer from the worst health impacts of dirty air in the United States, air pollution causes premature death for 53,000 residents every year. In London, England, dirty air accounts for one out of every twelve deaths. In Delhi, India, the average life expectancy is shortened by 6.3 years due to air pollution.image of london pollution

Air pollution causes 1.6 million deaths every year in China - approximately 17% of all deaths.

For most countries, the deadliest form of air pollution is a fine particle known as "PM 2.5" (particulate matter 2.5). It is so named because it is a fine particle that is only 2.5 micrometers in diameter. Unlike larger air-borne particles that settle to the ground, PM 2.5 particles can float in the air for weeks. When you breath these particles into your lungs , they penetrate your lung tissue and get absorbed unfiltered into your blood stream - causing damage to your body. The problem with current air pollution control systems is that they reduce but do not eliminate pollution.

Dutch innovator Daan Roosegaarde , in collaboration with ENS Technology and the Delft University of Technology, developed large scalable towers that remove pollution emitted into the air.

This technology was originally developed to remove MRSA bacteria (a type of bacteria resistant to antibiotics) from dust particles. The bacteria would spread from human to human by traveling in the air on dust. The air ionizer prevented the bacteria from spreading in this way.

Roosegaarde's Tower cleans 30,000 cubic meters of air per hour without using ozone and uses about 1,400 Watts of electricity - less than a desk-top air purifier. Air from the area surrounding the Tower is drawn into the structure. All airborne particles receive an electric charge. The charged particles are captured and accumulate on large collector plates that have an opposite electric charge. The clean air is then blown from the Tower back into the environment. image smog free tower"Basically, it's like when you have a plastic balloon, and you polish it with your hand, it becomes static, electrically charged, and it attracts your hair," explains Roosegaarde. The invention won the German Design Award for Excellent Product Design awarded by the German Ministry for Economics and Technology. The Tower is currently being tested in Beijing by the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection.

“We're working now on the calculation : how many towers do we actually need to place in a city like Beijing. It shouldn't be thousands of towers, it should be hundreds. We can make larger versions as well, the size of buildings,” says Roosegaarde.
