INTERNATIONAL WORK – STUDY - TRAVEL EXPERIENCE • R U interested in traveling or living abroad?

• R U interested in working while you travel & explore?

• R U interested in studying in a foreign land, possibly for credit?

There are many ways to gain international/travel experience and the

benefits are many:

• learning new things via new experiences, challenges & info

• developing confidence in yourself and your abilities

• having fun, seeing new places, meeting new people & enjoying

different cultures/experiences

GETTING STARTED:

1. EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS by researching programs -- as a student, check with UofL Career &

Employment Services for reputable programs that are advertised through their office.

2. Check with the UofL 'INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR STUDENTS' Office- as they have experience

working with programs & Universities world wide, and can assist you with your research on options,

contacts and possible 'credit' links to your school/programs.

3. COLLECT FACTS - research each program (work, study, teaching ESL abroad). By checking every

detail ie. their history, length of existence, reputation and connections with Universities/ Colleges, you are

gaining information about their program quality & legitimacy.

4. COMPARE PROGRAMS - look at each program in terms of qualifications & requirements (including

work/study/travel VISAs) to find those that fit your needs. Also examine each for comparable cost,

arrangement details, & if the organization provides support with training, accommodation, travel, and

assistance along the way (before, during & after). Check with Canadian resource people/programs for

information to start.

5. TALK TO PEOPLE - Call programs directly to ask good questions, confirm details & get direct

information about the credibility of their program. Ask for names or ways to talk to people who have

participated in their programs directly - as this 'real information' is the best way to sort through options &

issues that are causing questions.

6. COMPARE WAGE &/or CONTRACT &/or PROGRAM DETAILS - look carefully over the details

regarding length of program/contract, renewal possibility, work/study visa requirements, tasks/duties, and

other features so that you are aware of all facts & issues that are important. It is YOUR

RESPONSIBILITY to research each program & all details before taking part…all your effort will be

worth it in the long run!

Michelle SnowdonUnderwriter

“For a greater advantage, and the highest placement value, I would recommend courses in law as well as successful completion of a business or insurance program.”

UnderwriterYou’re a relationship developer and decision-maker Underwriters accept or reject risk on behalf of insurance companies. They assess the kind of insurance required by organizations as diverse as a shopping mall, a professional sports team, a manufacturer, a city government or a construction company. Underwriters examine every facet of the organization’s operation and its request for insurance, then decide what the insurance company should cover and how much it should charge.

Sara RunnallsBroker

“A college diploma or university degree in any subject is helpful for entry into the profession, although those who have studied nance, management, mathematics or business would have an advantage.”

Broker / AgentYou’re a people person and a great communicator Insurance brokers and agents help consumers find the right coverage to protect their cars, homes, businesses, boats and belongings against loss through accident, fire or theft. While brokers usually represent several insurance companies, agents are more likely to sell policies for just one. These are the entrepreneurs of the insurance industry with many of them working for themselves or for small independent firms.

Gavin MascarenhasLoss Adjuster

“The best advice is to specialize in law or business-relatedcourses.”

Loss AdjusterYou’re part private investigator and part therapist The loss adjuster is responsible for ensuring that those who have suffered a loss receive the compensation and assistance they are eligible to receive. Whether employed by the insurance company or working as an independent contractor, the loss adjuster investigates the accident, arranges medical treatment if necessary and negotiates the final settlement to restore policy holders to where they were, as closely as possible, before their loss.

Where do you want youreducation to take you?

Here’s a career path withunlimited potential. What are you looking for in a career? Earning potential? Security? Having the chance to face a new and dierent challenge every day? Whatever you’ve learned in school and in life, you’ll have the chance to use it in the insurance industry.

It’s hard to imagine a career choice where you’ll have the opportunity to use more of your skills than insurance. Why? Because insurance is already a part of everything you do. It protects homes, jobs, cars, property and the continuity of lives. And because insurance is all around us, the industry has a wide variety of careers to match your education and amazing flexibility to change directions along the way.

There are more than 110,000 Canadians working in the property & casualty insurance sector. It’s an industry that reflects the face and the values of Canadian society and has a constant need for talented, creative, motivated people.

Are you a people person? Brokers work with clients to create a strategy to protect their assets.

Gifted at math? You could thrive as an actuary.

Good at listening? As a claims professional, you’ll help people who are coping with an accident, fire or theft.

Strategic thinker? You could work as an underwriter and develop the products that keep people protected from unforeseen loss.

As your career in insurance progresses, every day can present interesting new opportunities, new challenges, and the flexibility to pursue new goals.

To find out more about where you might fit in with your post-secondary education, please visit our Web site at www.career-connections.info. You may be surprised to find that insurance isn’t what you think. It’s a whole lot more.

Your interests and your experience may add up to a great career in insurance.

Society of Local Government Managers

Administrative Professionals

Each time we turn on a tap in our kitchens, set the garbage out for pickup,

or cruise through our neighbourhoods on newly paved roads, we access

local government. Providing essential community services that ensure the

quality of our lives is what local government is all about.

City, town, and county managers make an enormous difference in the community they serve. Professional managers, much like executives running private sector corporations, bring together the leadership, vision, and focus on results needed to create better communities.

• managing financial and human resources;

• delivering services;

• planning strategically for community development;

• using performance metrics to achieve continuous improvement; and

• committing to higher ethical standards

The leadership and management decisions made by SLGM members in hundreds of communities affect thousands of individuals across Alberta. Committed members practicing quality professional management is the key to success of the Society of Local Government Managers.

Make Local Government Your Career Destination.

CAREER PORTFOLIOS... an advanced job search technique! DO YOU... have a collection of documents to show employers that provides first hand proof of your RELEVANT work quality, diverse experience, creativity, and relevant skill sets? If you do ... then you have a PORTFOLIO...if you don't...then you should GET ONE!

WHEN would you use a PORTFOLIO? During a job interview; during a performance evaluation meeting; when applying to graduate school; when applying for scholarships; for self-discovery and planning towards career goals/directions.

CAREER PORTFOLIOS are developed for many reasons....for employment, they are an advanced job search & interview technique created to help you 'stand out' in the crowd when you are competing for a position. By showing employers examples of your work & work quality during an interview, you can demonstrate to employers (vs. just explain) your initiative, performance success and star quality!

DEVELOPING A PORTFOLIO REQUIRES TIME (1-2 months & ongoing maintenance after that!) so take the time you need to do it right! Begin my collecting examples of your work (i.e. job descriptions, work projects, school/university papers, transcripts, letters of thanks, photographs of you in work/volunteer roles, newspaper clipping that feature you, etc.) Don't rush the process...carefully consider each document you collect &/or create and make sure it SPEAKS to the employers you target.

ATTEND a Career & Employment Services PORTFOLIO Workshop

Maria Livingston’s Story

OOUURR CCAARREEEERR FFAAIIRR AARRTTIISSTT

“I'm from northern alberta, I grew up in Slave Lake andmoved to Lethbridge in 2000. my mom went to the u of lso that’s why we moved here. I just finished my firstyear at the u, i was in the first nations transitionprogram and i made the deans list. I’m going for mybachelors degree in native american studies.

I have had an interest in art my whole life, itook as many art classes as i could through highschool and junior high. i won an art 2d award in grade 12 at arts alive and well inthe schools, it was a picture of a native dancer and they said they could see the passionfor the subject in that. i mostly focus on ink drawings and fishscale art now, i learntfishscale art from my mother who learnt from a cree woman named mary periard. ialways try to incorporate my culture in my art because it’s a way for me to show whoi am and what i love. whether this is by using traditional materials like hide, beads or fish scales, or depicting images that are important in my culture.

my main source of inspiration is family and culture, they go hand in hand to meand they were always very important in my family. i started hoop dancing in2006, i learnt from J.J. First Charger. i love sharing my culture that way too, itsnot as common to see as other styles of native dancing (like fancy or traditional)so it draws in a crowd and intrigues people to ask questions, which i am alwaysglad to answer.

about the piece: i started with the theme (start here go anywhere) andadded my personal cultural aspect to that. My older sister Sandra YellowHorn and i first learnt how to hoop dance together. we performed together fora while, but we don’t anymore because she's going to trent university rightnow for her masters degree. sandra was always a great role model for me tohave, she kept hoop dancing and has danced in a lot of places, and shealso went to university. most of my family still lives in northern albertaand its hard not having family in lethbridge, so that reinforces theimportance of family. i really miss my sister, and this piece shows howimportant family and having a good role model to look up to is.”

Co-op Education & Internships

A co-op work term is a great way for highly motivated students to apply their course knowledge in the workplace. It enables students to gain work experience from knowledgeable individuals and organizations, increasing the value of a students’ degree and providing organizations with the opportunity to utilize young, fresh minds.

Stacey Fujikawa, Marketing

The Co-op Program is for self-starters like you, students who are serious about gaining the kinds of skills required for success. Co-op experience tells prospective employers that you’ve had the kind of mentoring, experience and training needed to prepare you for the professional work world. Complete four to 24 months, but 12 months will earn you your Co-op designation. Just be sure to explore your potential career paths through Co-op—the internationally recognized preferred way to complete a degree.
