LEIPZIG
Leipzig is well-known for its industrial fair, the Leipziger Messe. In fact, the first trade exposition took place in 1190, making Leipzig one of the oldest fair cities in the world. It is also a cultural hub thanks to German composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy who worked in the Saxon city.
In 1989 Leipzig Eastern German civil opposition started the so-called Monday Demonstrations, which became a public symbol of criticism of the political system and finally led to the collapse of the German Democratic Republic and the reunification of Germany. Today the city of 590.000 inhabitants is still famous as a trade fair town, as the site of Germany’s second oldest university, and as one of the greenest cities in the country – approximately 50% of it is covered by parks, gardens or woods. The Leipzig University celebrated its 600th anniversary in 2009. One can visit many historic and very modern sites of this excellent scientific institution.

SOCIAL & CULTURAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Leipzig as City of Music
Leipzig’s reputation as city of music is unquestioned. Among others Bach, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Schumann, Wagner, Lortzing and Mahler worked here. The St. Thomas Boys Choir and the Gewandhaus Orchestra should also to be mentioned. The St. Thomas Boys Choir performs on a regular basis in the St. Thomas’ Church, where Johann Sebastian Bach once worked as choirmaster and composer.
The concert hall, the so-called Gewandhaus, is especially known for the orchestra it is home to, the famous Gewandhausorchester. The Orchestra is one of the oldest and most famous German concert orchestras.
The Leipzig Opera traces its establishment to the year 1693, making it the third oldest opera venue in Europe. Today, Leipzig’s Opera House boasts one of the best ballet companies in Europe, an opera choir, a children’s choir and a ballet school.

Leipzig today
Nowadays, well-known companies like BMW, Porsche and DHL have chosen Leipzig as the business location of their businesses. This can certainly be explained by the highly modern and excellent infrastracture of the region. Leipzig offers an incomparable combination of modernity, tradition and history.
