January 201THE CITY OF EDINBURGH RUNNING FESTIVAL PRO RUNNING AS IT SHOULD BE IN THIS ISSUE
Welcome to the
first of what will
be regular
updates on theCity of Edinburgh Running Festival. These
updates will be distributed to sponsors,
competitors and officials and is our way to of
keeping everyone informed and involved.
Feedback is welcome as are any ideas or
suggestions on how to improve the festival
experience for all.
The aim is to keep you informed on what is
happening between these annual events and
to get your suggestion and feedback on how
we can continue to innovate and grow the
event going forward.
We will provide you information on the event
itself and also on the various sponsors and
partners who are integral to the success of
the event.
Innovation for 2014
We realise that we need to continue to
innovate to keep the running festival fresh
and attractive to athletes, sponsors and
spectators. Here are some ideas we are
considering for 2014.
Female only sprint
A female only invitation sprint will take the
top 8 female entrants and see themcomplete in a one off sprint where each will
be guaranteed a monetary prize.
Football v Rugby
The football versus rugby race will see
players from each sport compete to f ind the
fastest player over 300m, no handicaps and a
one off single race. Could be interesting
when they reach the bend, could be carnage!
Pre-event Dinner
We are looking at the feasibility of includinga pre-event dinner maybe a month before
the actual event so watch out for more detail
on that.
Hospitality
There were a few minor issues around
hospitality last year so we are looking to
refine and improve where we can following
feedback from our sponsors.
Review of 2013Our Chairman Graeme Armstrong reviews the 2013
running festival.
Spotlight on SponsorWe have an in-depth look at Ortholink and reveal so
interesting facts.

On what was one of summers warmest
nights, the first running festival took place at
Meggetland in front of a healthy sun baked
crowd. With preparations all complete it was
now up to the athletes to provide us with the
entertainment.
The Ortholink 110m Sprint
The main event of the evening was the
Ortholink 110m sprint which attracted the
largest entry in the Summer Games.
An odds-on favorite emerged after the heats
with Sean Harris (Crosshill) clocking the
fastest time. His chance disappeared in the
cross ties when he broke down mid race,
leaving the final wide open.
False starts for Leigh Marshall and Jordan
Charters virtually ended their hopes and it
was Graeme Scott (T.L.J.T) who emerged
victorious with a superb run in the final to
take the 3,000 first prize. Ewan Dyer
(Pitreavie) and Ben Robbins (EAC) were
second and third respectively.
The 800m sponsored by Nigel Jones
The 800m sponsored by Nigel Jones was the
featured distance race of the evening, and
what a cracker it proved to be. Three hotly
contested heats provided us with six in form
runners for the final, which proved to be the
most exciting finish of the night. Martyn
Paterson (Clackmannan) looked to be the
winner coming off the bend as he passed
Kyle Potts (T.L.J.T) and went five metres
clear. Potts had other ideas though andrallied to challenge on the line. The photo
finish told us that Potts had just failed to get
up leaving Paterson a relieved winner of the
750 first prize.
Other Senior Events
The other senior events were also hotly
contested. Firstly the 200m sponsored by
Evans Halshaw saw local man Kevin Turner
(Edinburgh) just fail to hold off fast finishing
Cameron Grieve (Jed AC) with David Agnew
(Pitreavie) third. The 1600m also sponsored
by Evans Halshaw saw a deserved win forGavin Taitt (T.L.J.T) with John Thomson
(Coaltown) second and Scott McDonald
(Central) third.
Youth Events
There was to be further success for the
Border runners in the youth events with all
five titles heading south. Jason Mackintosh
(Kelso) was in impressive winner of the under
17 800m sponsored by Indigo PR and Nathan
Cox (Gala) took the under 17 1600m,
sponsored by Clarity IFA, from the scratchmark.
The youths 90m sponsored by Alba Bevera
was won by Cameron Fisher (Jed AC). The
200m races were split in to two categorieswith Cameron Clamp (T.L.J.T) taking the
junior race sponsored by Bruce Collie
Building Company and Jamie Mackay
(Peebles) taking the youths race sponsored
by McIvor Therapies.
A great night for the borders!

AUSTRALIA POST STAWELL GIFT
Probably the most famousProfessional Race in the world
he Stawell Gift is the meeting that the
dinburgh Running Festival was modelled on.
Many Scottish athletes past and present have
ompeted at Stawell including three of our
rganizing committee and so impressed were
hey by the organization and setup that we
ecided to try and use a similar event model here.

Our sponsors made
our event possible.
Not just possible but
incredibly special.
The comments wehave received from
the runners and
crowd have all been
overwhelmingly positive. Those
who had been to Australia to watch or take
part in pro-running had seen the likes before,
but they were few in numbers. The majority
had never experienced a running meeting
which was so slickly timed, organised,
vibrant and so well thought out.
With your financial help we were able to
offer seriously attractive prize money and
this, of course, brought out the best in therunners, creating finishes that were tight and
spectacular well done to the handicapper.
Our Sponsors enabled us to brand our event
in great style - something we admired from
the Australians and, thanks to you, were able
to recreate a wee bit of it over here. Our aim
is to continue to raise the standard,
encouraging participation and a fitness for
life attitude in Scotland. Based on what
exists overseas we are aiming to attract more
runners of all ages, bringing bigger
supporting crowds, driving more media
involvement and creating a vibrant, socialatmosphere which Edinburgh can be proud
of.
We can announce that 7 of our 8 sponsors are
back with us for 2014. That is just fantastic.
We are determined to make your
sponsorship have the most impact possible.
We would like to help you get to know each
other a bit more, there may be cross selling
opportunities or networking benefits for you.
For instance, Alba Beverage sells fantastic
coffee machines and vending supplies which
could have a place in many other businesse
and/or in any office situation.
Indigo PR is highly respected in their field
including crisis management and is based
just down the road in Leith. McIvorTherapies are very, very busy providing
therapies for footballers, runners and a hos
of other sports people and the not so sporty
Our local, ex professional footballer, Max
Christie and his staff at Clarity IFA are fun,
qualified, approachable people who are
happy to discuss any financial issue. Bruce
Collie Building Company, based in Blackhal
is a family business that is highly thought o
and continues to build and extend in and
around Edinburgh. And we all need cars!
Evans Halshaw bringing the Ford vehicle
onto the pitch was just great. We know atleast one runner who has recently bought a
new ford so it was noticed!
And finally, Jim Malcolm of Ortholink We
cant say enough about your involvement.
You are an admired sportsman who is
steeped in sport and want to put something
back into it. We respect and applaud your
generosity, we are lucky to have you on
board and wed love nothing more than to
work with you to continually build your
event, in your name for many years to com
With Jims vision were going to be able to
introduce some new ideas and even morecolour this year. We loved Jims idea of
moving the hospitality downstairs, using
some of the bar area and taking up some of
the outside Terrace Area with a large gazeb
all being cordoned off for sponsors and VIP
hospitality
If anyone has any inspirations or would like
any inputs into our e-newsletter please,
please get in touch with me or Andy. Wed
love to share your news and ideas.

N THE RUNNING THE OFFICIAL CERF NEWSLETTER Is
Ortholink (Scotland) Ltdis a small,
independent medical device company based
in Scotland. It was founded and first started
trading in 2004 by Jim Malcolm. Celebrating
10 years in business this year, lets take a look
at where it all stemmed from
The Army Years
Jim Malcolm, age 16 and a keen runner, joins
the British military apprentice college.
Advancing through years, the athletic ability
develops and Jim finds himself working as anassistant physical trainer and running
remedial PE. Becoming known as a fantastic
runner and all-around athlete now, he puts
together a small team of men that will soon
become a cross country force to be reckoned
with. Throughout a 10 year service in the
military, Jim participates in many sports and
sporting events and upon leaving, is certainly
not ready to stop competing.
A Decathlete is born
Musselburgh running club in the mid 1980s
will acquire what is soon to be a valuable
asset. Jim joins and quickly makes a name
for himself on the track and on the road. But
running alone doesnt cut it, and so theintroduction to multi-events begins. Over
the years, his ability in track and field
develops and a very competitive decathlete
is created.
With an ever growing desire to be
successful, Jim continues to
compete, alongside various
endurance events to raise funds
for local charities. Becoming
known as the local action man,
he is a well-respected athlete and
soon to be entrepreneur.
The Medical Man
Upon applying for a job in the medical
industry in 1992, Jim finds himself working in
the field of Orthopaedics. With an already
very advanced understanding of the human
body through participation in sports, and
nursing the numerous injuries that come
along with it, this once again becomes an
area to excel. Years pass by, and the career
is blossoming, so again with the desire to be
successful, Jim makes the decision to go out
in to business on his own. OrthoLink is born.
Athletics has to take a back seat for a while
as the company is developed, but Jim has the
pleasure of watching it grow and also
watching his two sons, Chris and Sean who
are also valuable members of Ortholink Staff,
develop their own sporting abilities. They
ensure that their dad never gets a chance to
take it too easy and so even as the years
pass, the physical side of Jim never goes
away.
The present day.
So here we are Present day and OrthoLink
is 10 years old and Jim finds himself getting
fit to hopefully break back in to the world of
athletics.
What better way to rekindle the love of the
sport than to support other young and
developed athletes with the same burning
desire to succeed.
As a proud sponsor of the City Of Edinburg
Running Festival, Jim will definitely still be
standing by the side-lines and who knows
when the trainers will be dusted off once
again.
