HE DEATH OF HER YOUNGER SISTER pro-foundly changed the life of Stephanie Haidar, the vale-dictorian for the Ceres High School class of 2016. Watch-

ing Grace go through a life-ending Pro-lidase deficiency autoimmune disease gave Stephanie reason to make the most of her life. Remembering the medical struggle that ended Grace’s life at age seven has also inspired her to strive to become a geneticist.

“That really inspired me to go into the medical field,” said Stephanie, who is also considering rheumatology, the study of rheumatism, arthritis and other disorders of the joints, muscles and ligaments. “I want to lean more towards researching rather than practicing.”

Teaching is another interest for Stepha-nie since she enjoyed tutoring some stu-dents in math through high school. “Just that interaction I find really special.”

A small margin of difference in grade point averages separates Haidar’s 4.31 and the 4.286 earned by salutatorian Sydney Elness. The 18-year-old women came down to the final weeks of their senior year at Ceres High School before they knew who would occupy which title of top students of the class of 371.

“We knew (we were the top students) but we just weren’t sure who would get what because of GPAs were pretty close,” said Stephanie who had her eye on being the class valedictorian since she was a freshman.

According to Principal Linda Stubbs, the top four competitors in the class were all within tenths of points of one another. Other seniors who earned a GPA of 4.0 or above were Arianne Amparo-Partida, Alexis Arias, Jalani Blankenship, Maria Ferrera, Kailee Fox, Stephanie Garcia, Saray Gonzalez, Chelsea Heras, Makayla Lawrence, Charles Lo, Jacqueline Lujan, Harjot Mangat, David Montufar, Jagjit Pabla and Amritpal Singh.

Stephanie remembers struggling in the fourth grade at Virginia Parks Elementary School because of her sister’s illness and the focus on family issues. “The next year I tried to focus on myself and it was one reason to make my family proud because it was so much that we had been going through,” said Stephanie. “So just to make

them proud I started to work hard and that drove me all the way through junior high and high school.”

She also had role models in her parents, David and Lena Haidar, who came to the United States from Iraq with their respective families to pur-sue a better life.

“He’s always been that person that, no matter what it takes, he’ll always get it,” said Haidar. “That’s actually how my mom is too.

They’re both really serious and I think that also comes from their family and where they’re from. I mean, Iraq is fun but at the same time it’s always been dangerous so you kind of have to stay on top of your toes there. It’s also a different society, like their women can’t do certain things com-pared to here where you almost have the same equality as men. That really drove my mom over here.”

Elness said she wasn’t as driven to become a valedictorian but she did chose to strive for all A’s “for myself.”

Sydney’s parents, (former Ceres police officer) Bryon and Melissa Elness, started her education out at Summit Charter prep school and then she attended Vanguard College Preparatory Academy in Empire where she was “constantly challenged.” She considers herself a self-driven person but remembers slacking off after she trans-ferred to Mae Hensley Junior High and

then graduating into Ceres High.“It was just so easy for me, especially

like freshman and sophomore year, just because they had pushed us so hard,” said Elness. “It didn’t happen until my junior year that I had to actually start studying, like I had to teach myself how to start study in AP classes. But I think it was that strong foundation that Summit and Van-guard that helped me.”

Stephanie opted for Ceres schools because she didn’t like wearing a school uniform at Vanguard, and because Ceres offered sports unlike the college prep school and AP classes.

“I wanted a real authentic high experi-ence and that’s why I transferred to Mae Hensley so I could go to Ceres High School.”

Stephanie enjoyed math and science classes while at CHS and recently started enjoying English, mostly because Mr.

Victoria Perez was raised in the Valley. Growing up she always strived to be the center of attention, in which she often suc-ceeded. Vic-toria from a young age was encour-aged to do her best and aim for the highest goals. Victoria didn’t know what she wanted to be growing up but after a lifetime of education she wishes to further her knowledge into environmental politics at Humboldt State this fall. She is excited to pursue her education and begin her life full of excitement and the unknown.

Aileen Brambila moved to Central Valley High School as a sophomore and this change in her life allowed her to become involved, such as being the president of Soccer Club and treasurer of Spanish Literature Club. Aileen also worked very hard academi-cally as well as managed to balance her AP classes and participated in the leadership class on campus. She believes that her transi-tion to a different high school was one of the best decisions of her life and aided her to her accomplishment of being accepted to U.C. Berkeley. She plans on attending U.C. Berkeley this fall and majoring in biology which will push her to achieve further aspi-rations in life. Aileen says, “I can’t wait to start this new chapter in my life. I can’t say that I am not nervous, but I know that so far my transitions in life have been very benefi-cial. I’m very excited to see what’s in store for my future.”

Villasenor at top at CVHS • 21 CVHS seniors earned GPAs above 4.0 to become class co-salutatoriansIvan Villasenor has lived in Modesto

and attended Ceres schools all his life. From Westport Elementary to Blaker Kinser and finally to CVHS, Ivan Vil-lasenor lives, breathes, and is Ceres. He is excited to proceed to the next segment in his life, college. However, he is still undecided on which college he is going to attend. One thing is almost for sure, that he is going to be majoring in Chemistry and pre-medicine in whichever college he finally chooses to embark his journey on. Ivan will struggle adapting to this new more independent lifestyle as he has always been a momma’s boy but he will succeed with the support from his family and friends.

Growing up in a Mexican environment, he was always surrounded by a family that supported his academic achievements and goals. Being the youngest sibling of two, Ivan strives to follow in his older sibling’s footsteps and make his mom proud. Dur-ing his high school career, he was actively involved in many clubs, activities, and community service projects. Some of them include NHS, CSF, Interact, Science Bowl, Link Crew, and attending Lucas Elementary School to assist in their Christ-mas event.

Ivan Villasenor is the 2016 Central Valley High School class valedictorian.

Andrew Dias will be attending Modesto Junior College this fall. He is very excited to start studying agricultural sciences and receive his credential to teach Agricul-tural Education from CSU Chico. He was involved in CSF and FFA throughout high school, and was serving as the Central Val-ley FFA president.

Gabriella has remained involved both on campus and off, while allowing educa-tion and family to remain a priority. She is active on campus through participation with Central Valley FFA, where she has served as the chapter vice president, attended the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky., served on the State FFA Convention Nominating Com-mittee, and won first place in the Regional Job Interview contest. Gabri-ella is also involved in National Honor Society, Califor-nia Scholarship Federation, S Club, and Wind Ensemble. Outside of school, Gabriella participates in 4-H, where she is the president of Westport 4-H and has attended the National 4-H Conference in Washington, DC. She also is a member of All Saints Catholic Church youth group and is a volunteer for Holy Rosary Catholic Church’s Vaca-tion Bible School program. Gabriella plans to major in Communications Studies at California State University, Stanislaus. Her ultimate goal is to work for the Dynamic Catholic Institute as an event planner.

Jennifer Torres Diaz was born in the Bay area and raised in Ceres since 3. She and two older sisters were raised by parents who came from Mexico seek-ing a better future for them and their children. From a young age, Jennifer acknowledged and appreciated her family and her edu-cation.

Jennifer has always loved going to school. She always had good relationships with

her teachers because she was respectful and respon-sible. At CVHS, Jennifer was part of the Impulse dance team, a member of National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation, and the president for AP Span-ish Club. “Being involved has allowed me to grow as an individual because of all the students I have met,” said Jennifer. “I learned to balance my family, academics, and activities well which I know will make my college transition easier.”

Jennifer will be the first in her family to go to college. She will be attending the U.C. Davis this fall as a biol-ogy major. Jennifer aspires to become a doctor.

Since Kasandra Arceo first started school, education was a top priority. As a child she was seemingly obvious to her surroundings, but knows now that where she grew up played a significant role in her future. Her family, friends and teach-ers have not only helped her reach her goals but have set her to new horizons. At Central Valley High School she was most active in AP Spanish and various clubs and sports like National Honors Society, California Scholarship Federation and Varsity Cheerleading. Outside of school Kasandra has been working at the Affection Clothing Store in Ceres since the summer of her freshman year and still continues on until this day and now carries the title of management at the age of seventeen. Kasandra is excited to graduate and see what’s

next for her. She will most likely be attend-ing U.C. Davis or U.C. Berkeley this fall as a biology major to pursue her goals in nursing. As she says, “Yes, keeping up with my proficiency was difficult, but I never once stopped or gave up on my education because I knew it would all be worth it at the end.” Kasandra’s advice to other students is to make sure once you get where you’re going, not to for-get to turn back around and always help the next one in line.

Jose was born in Mexico and raised by parents who moved here in 2002. He understands now that “their journey to the United States for better opportunities, especially for their children, has always inspired me to pursue what I wanted to accomplish and I thank them for that.” Since Jose first started school, edu-cation was a top priority. At CVHS he enrolled in various AP classes including: AP Psychology, AP Spanish Lit, AP Span-ish Language, AP government, and AP Statistics. He currently passed the Psychology, and two Spanish AP tests with 4’s. Out-

side of school he works at Little Caesa’rs. The first in his family to go to college, Jose will be attending CSU Stanislaus this fall as a Business Administration major. He will be staying at his current home, with his family. The reason he choose to go to this college is to stay close to his home. His motivation to gradu-ate from college is to motivate his siblings that by giving it their all at everything including high school anything is possible. He is excited to graduate from high school and is anxious to start his college experience.

Chelsea Flores was born and raised in Modesto. While attending Central Valley High School, she was a member of the Varsity Girls Tennis Team for three years and received the Hawk Award for outstanding performance her senior year. She was involved in various clubs such as CSF, Interact, and PHAST. She has gained valuable real-life experience mentoring

students at Summit Charter Academy and volunteering in her community. Chelsea will be attending the Cali-fornia State Uni-versity Stanislaus this fall to pursue her interests in business and forensic science. She is eager to see what the world has to offer her and looks forward to traveling to gain new insights on life.

Chelsea FloresCeres raised, Erika Lopez began to wholeheartedly focus

on her education at a young age. Neither her parents nor her siblings had attended college, but they constantly motivated her to strive for success and pursue her dreams. She is now the first in her family to attend a college. Erika has picked U.C. Davis where she plans to major in neurobiology, physi-ology, and behavior on her way to becoming a physician’s assistant.

Erika’s goal as a freshman was to earn at least a 4.0 GPA at the end of high school and she took classes such as Advanced Placement biology, statistics and psy-chology. She looks back at her goal and smiles know-ing that she was successful. She not only focused on school but involved her-self in several community service such as feeding the homeless and taking care of children at her local church. Erika was a mem-ber of the National Honors Society and the California Scholarship Federation.

Since a very young age, Julia Ramsey has been very devoted to her schooling and driven to be successful. At Central Valley High School, she participated in volleyball, soft-ball, leadership, and was a mem-ber various clubs such as National Honor Society, California Schol-arship Federation, and Interact. She also volunteered actively at her church, La Loma Grace Brethren, and this past year has worked as a student nursing assis-tant at Hy-lond Nursing Facility in Modesto. Julia owes a lot of her success in school to her mother, a third grade teacher in Ceres Unified School District. She states, “My mother has always pushed me to be my best in school, and she has always been there to support me in every-thing that I did.”

Julia will be attending CSU Stanislaus in the fall as a pre-nursing major, with plans to become a Nurse Practi-tioner.

Amy Nguyen was born in Viet-nam and spent the majority of her childhood growing up in the Stanislaus County. She moved to Ceres in the fifth grade and attended Hidahl Elementary School. Amy said her parents have played an integral part in fostering her success. She accredits their hard-working nature as her “biggest moti-vation” towards succeeding in her school endeavors. Amy is most proud

that she was able to balance her rigorous course loads and remain an active member in her extracurricular activities. She has fond memories on the Varsity Girls Tennis Team, PHAST Club, NHS, and Interact Club. With a brother entering the CVHS class of 2020 she offers her advice to him and other underclassmen: “The easiest and most productive way of approaching high school is to set goals very early on and stay focused and passionate. I hope all students become involved in school activities and do not merely confine themselves to the classroom.” Amy will be attending the U.C. Los Angeles as an International Development major.

Sergio Lopez, born in the Bay area and raised in the Val-ley, showed a lot of interest in his education since he was young. He says his strongest motivation was witnessing his parents struggling financially due to a lack of education. His parents were raised in Mexico, but moved to California in search of a better life. Their decision that inspired Sergio to do the best he possibly could in school.

Since seventh grade Sergio has been dedicated to his edu-cation receiving nothing less than an A in all of his classes. Academically, he challenges himself with a rigorous course load including Advanced Placement, Government, Calculus, Statistics and Environmental Science. He was also a member of the swimming team for two seasons and was a member of

many clubs, including the California Scholar-ship Federation and National Honor Soci-ety. When he wasn’t at school he would volunteer at St. Stan-islaus Church for mainly maintenance work. He is the third of four children who will graduate from CVHS and also attend college

Sergio will attend U.C. Davis where he will be majoring in Bio-logical sciences. He will go to fresh waters, but is not afraid as he sees it as a way to challenge himself.

Because her parents came from Mexico at a young age with little education, Valley born and raised Yajaira Reynoso has been inspired to become focused on school so she can have what her parents were not able to achieve: an education. Her siblings also have always been by her side pushing her even in the rough-est times. Throughout Yajaira’s high school career she has faced many disheartening and difficult obstacles; however, she maintained a 4.0 or higher GPA. She was also involved in cross country, track and field, National Honor Society, and California

Scholarship Federation. Yajaira also volunteered her time at Par-ent Resource Center and helped with Love Modesto.

Yajaira will be attending the U.C. Davis this fall as a nutritional science major. She has always envisioned herself attending a U.C. and feels proud to be able to attend such a pres-tigious school, as well as feeling like her academic work has been paid off. She is nervous for the rigorous workload that is ahead of her, but she knows she can push through it and achieve any-thing she sets her mind to.

Oscar will be attending CSU Stanislaus as a Busi-ness Administration major. His plan is to then attend a seminary somewhere in California. “I not only want to make a difference in the workforce but also impact my community,” said Oscar. “I am ready.”

Oscar’s father moved to United States from El Sal-vador and his mother from Mexico in the and to Ceres in 2003. “Their journey to the U.S. for better oppor-

tunities, especially for their children, has always inspired me to work hard and pursue what I want to accomplish and for that I am very thank-ful,” he said.

At CVHS, he was active in choir his sophomore and junior years and in clubs like National Honor Society, and CSF. Oscar has vol-unteered at Apostolic Worship Center in Salida for three years.

Maria R. Rojas moved to Ceres in 2005 to start second grade. Eleven years later, she’s graduating high school, look-ing forward to U.C. Davis where she’ll be studying psychol-ogy and pre-medicine. After graduating from U.C. Davis, she’ll pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.

Growing up in a large family with Mexican roots, Maria was surrounded with family who applauded her at awards ceremonies and cheered her on at tennis matches. As the oldest sister of five younger siblings, Maria strives to be

a role model for them. By furthering her educa-tion, she is setting a good example and showing her siblings that it is possible to make your dreams into a reality if you work hard and stay focused.

During high school, she was involved in National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation, Interact Club, Science Bowl, and also Varsity Tennis. She also volun-teered in the afterschool program at Lucas Elemen-tary.

Born and raised in the Valley, Sunil Saini possesses a desire for success. Now poised to graduate from CVHS, Sunil intends to enter the medical field with a biology-related major from U.C. Davis and assist those in desperate need in his community when he grows up.

Tracing his intellectual appetite takes one to his parents who were born in India and eventually immigrated to America and Ceres. Their ethic of hard work rubbed off and he said he would

never willingly miss a day of school. Since adoles-cence, Sunil understood the importance of education and the effect that it could poten-tially have for his future endeavors. With his parents always working through-out the week, he gained a sense of independence and responsibility. However, Sunil’s parents were always supportive of his academic ventures throughout his childhood.

Sunil has dedicated time to clubs at CVHS, including Interact and CSF.

His dream is simply to help others and be content.

Kendall Tessaro has always been remarkably organized and driven to complete tasks at a high standard. While main-taining the academic rigor to achieve the privilege of being a salutatorian, she also immersed herself in the school’s community by becoming involved with many clubs and rig-orous classes. As a part of the Leadership class, Kendall has served as the Senior Class vice president and is a member of Interact and the California Scholarship Federation among having four Advanced Placement classes this year. Kendall’s

academic success has provided the opportunity to attend California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in the fall while majoring in Business Administra-tion with a concentra-tion in Marketing.

“I am extremely proud of my accom-plishments at Central Valley but it is now my time to progress forward and strive for success as I com-mence my journey,” said Kendall.

Middleton made it challenging. He was her favorite teacher with math teacher Susan Vanni com-ing in a close second. “I think she really prepared me for college,” said Haidar. Middleton, she said, can be very serious and focused and very funny at times.

“He had a bunch of jokes and he’d always read to us in different voices like we were third-graders but we enjoyed it,” chimed in Sydney of Middleton. “He’d just tell us weird things.”

His off-the-wall comments, clarified Principal Stubbs, are designed to challenge students in their thinking and test their logic.

Elness also enjoyed math and science classes with AB Biology as her favorite. “I like history, too. It’s pretty easy.” Another of her favorite teachers was Anthony Gerads, who was also her track coach. She always felt, however, that no matter the teacher “I like to push myself more than have people push me.”

Stephanie was part of the track and field team as a freshman and sophomore, competing in shot put and discus throwing. “I wasn’t the best but it was a fun experi-ence because I had never done a sport before,” she said.

Both girls took a heavy load of Advanced Placement classes at CHS. Haidar had nine in her high school career and Elness had eight. When asked if the classes

are hard, Sydney replied: “The struggle is real.” The amount of essay writing increased from three as a sophomore to 35 as a junior. “It was like a punch in the face. I had to tie myself to my desk and type all night.” Stepha-nie answered: “You just have to get used to it, kind of like col-lege, like the first year you have to adjust to everything. It’s just like that once you start taking AP classes.”

Headed for UCLA in the fall, Stephanie is looking forward to a different pace of life than what Ceres has offered. For one thing, classes will be huge compared to the small intimate setting she’s enjoyed at CHS and will miss.

“I wanted to go somewhere far and experience a different city. I just want to have a new experi-ence. They also have some really good majors so those two were definitely the decision factors.”

The University of California, Davis, is where you’ll find Elness this fall.

“I already want to change my major from bio chemistry to something called NPB, which is Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior,” said Elness. “Ulti-mately I want to go to medical school and become a surgeon.”

Both anticipate competition for the fields they want to pursue.

“Everyone wants a spot now in the medical field in gen-eral,” said Haidar. “I’ve heard that some people after they get their bachelor’s, they actually take some time off to find a job

because it’s just really hard being simply accepted into the medical schools. It’s a popular thing to do so it’s going to difficult trying to get in.”

Because she volunteers as a crew leader at Doctors Medi-cal Center on Sundays, Sydney learned of one’s technician’s plight to apply to 17 schools at a cost of $10,000 in travel, only to be accepted to five of them.

Like Stephanie, Sydney will miss the close-knit feel of the student-teacher relationships. At CHS she was able to just drop in

and converse with teachers. She doesn’t expect to have that same interaction in Davis.

Both Haidar and Elness are in the throes of finishing their final high school assignment: the writing of their commencement addresses.

“I definitely want to get out of the safe zone because people remember it more when it’s dif-ferent,” said Stephanie. “I want it to be something special and I hope people enjoy it and don’t fall asleep.”

Sydney said she may “take

some risks” in her speech, an inspiration from Grey’s Anatomy “because that’s what I’m watch-ing while doing my homework.” She claims to enjoy multi-task-ing.

Principal Stubbs said she’s inspired by the fact that her two top graduating students are aspir-ing to the STEM (Science, tech-nology, engineering and math) field. “Typically boys do better in those fields and girls do bet-ter in the English and humanities field,” said Stubbs. “One of the things we’ve tried to do at the school is get more females inter-ested in those types of classes and to really have teachers maybe that are females in some of those classes and being able to recruit some of the girls in there. I think it’s neat that they’re breaking the mold a little bit.”

Stubbs added that she doesn’t recall any of her students ever expressing a desire to become a geneticist like Haidar.

Sydney is closing out her high school career after having set an exemplary example for her sib-lings, Clayton and Camryn, both who attend Ceres High. She plans to get a job this summer.

Stephanie, on the other hand, will be learning how to drive a car to enable her to make the 300-mile trek home when she can.

“I haven’t started driving yet but I will this summer. I’m going to work on it, I promised myself.”
