Independent Ceramics StudySummer 2017

Facilitated by Camellia El-Antably & Mark Vinich

Objective/Goal:To hone or build new skills in ceramics which the teacher feels will advance their own knowledge of ceramics and enable them to better teach ceramics to students. Ceramics covers a large area of the arts—working in clay, whether functionally or sculpturally as well as surface design and decoration. Proposals may focus on any aspects of ceramics from raku to majolica, high fire, throwing, or glazing or other surface decorating techniques. Sometimes teachers find themselves teaching ceramics when they have little background in the area; other times they may be a ceramicist who wishes to extend their knowledge. This opportunity offers teachers the opportunity to focus in on specific areas of learning that they feel will benefit them in the long term. This is an independent study experience; be prepared to determine your own learning and motivate yourself to move forward.

SyllabusTo participate in this independent study, plan to:

Provide a proposal detailing what you will study and why, resources you will use (these can include internet, books and other people), the kinds of work you will produce, and what you hope to gain with the registration form by June 12, 2017.

Proposals will be reviewed and approved or returned for adjustment within a week of submission

Complete 40 hours of ceramics work according to your approved proposal. This is on the honor system; please keep track to ensure you complete the forty hours.

Provide pictures of work completed with descriptions explaining what you worked on and whether it worked or not and a short paper (no more than two pages) by August 18, 2017 via email to [email protected]

Participate in two online meetings. This will require a computer, preferably with camera for a video call, and internet. Most likely we will use google hangouts, a free and easy to use platform which works on both Mac and Microsoft.

o Meeting 1: introduce your plans and learn about other participants plans, and develop a network of people who are resources

o Meeting 2: short final presentation explaining what you learned and hopefully showing off some pieces.

Depending on the needs of the group, we may set up a third online meeting.

We will share email addresses so that the group can also help each other if questions arise.
