The Secretary(RD/Panchayat), Shri Suneel Anchipaka along withDirector(RD/P), Shri Vinay Kumar Jindalinaugurated the two day 'SHG Mela'. About 67 SelfHelp Groups formed under DAY-NRLM, NABARD,A& N State Cooperative Bank Limited, NGOs,NULM and other institutions are participating inthe mela for display and sale of their productsranging from handicrafts made of coconut shell,bamboo & cane, ladies hand bags made of pearls,coir products, decorative door hangings made ofwool, embroided table cloths, fish pickle, honey,local spices, foot mat made of waste cloths etc. The participant SHGs were brimming with joy asthey set up their stalls for selling wares of differentkinds. Port Blair, March 6 Cleaning beaches, which once seemed like a herculean task forthe authorities alone, is now turning into reality with activeparticipation of local youth volunteers. To take forward the messageof Swachhata, a beach cleanup drive was organized at Mahua Beacharea under Gram Panchayat Beodnabad. The clean-up drive was carriedout by Sanitary Workers and civil society volunteers in which theDirector (Rural Development) was also present. The event was aimed to involve the local populace and spread themessage of 'Swachhata' and responsibility towards protection andcommitment for a clean and plastic free coastline shores. About 100kgs of plastic and other wastes were recovered during the drive.General public have been once again requested to come forward andadopt their own locality towards achieving the goal of #Zero WasteIslands, a press release from Directorate of Rural Development said.
