Local pensioners have been amongst the hardesthit by the recent recession and price increases.

Research by Lloyds Bank showed that between 1998and 2008, inflation for pensioners was 11% higher thanthe average rate. This is because pensioners buy adifferent mix of products and spend more money onthings like energy bills.

Local Lib Dem MP Mike Hancock has outlined theaction that he would like to see taken to help localpensioners in Portsmouth.

This would start with an increase in the basic statepension for a pensioner coupleof £2400 a year.

Mike also wants the CouncilTax scrapped and replacedwith a local income tax.

Most local pensioners would pay no council tax or other local tax under thissystem saving the average income pensioner couple around £400 a year.

BETTER PAY FOR OUR TROOPS!FOLLOWING THE SHOCKING NEWS that our troops couldbe better off stacking shelves in supermarkets than fightingfor their country, local Lib Dem MP Mike Hancock hasbacked a campaign launched today by Lib Dem leader,Nick Clegg for better pay for our armed forces.

This increase would cost only 1% of the defence budget.

Mike Hancock said: “Our soldiers and service personnel doa difficult, demanding and dangerous job. And it is clear thatthere is widespread dissatisfaction over pay. I can’t under-stand why the Government values so poorly the difficult workthat our armed forces do – especially as that may includeputting their lives on the line for our country.”

What do you think is the best thing about Southsea Seafront?

What improvements or facilities would you like to see on Southsea Seafront?

IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS Cllrs Ireland,Adair and Hunt have surveyed almost everylocal home about increasing on-street parking.

The survey found huge support for the removalof REDUNDANT street 'build-outs'. Now thethree councillors have asked city officers tofollow-up residents' wishes and investigate theneed or otherwise for redundant or over-longbuild-outs identified by residents.

Cllr Ireland says, "All our residents can beassured we will not seek the removal of build-outs that make a positive contribution to thestreet-scene with trees and shrubbery, butwhere they are just used as a dump and don'twork we look to see if we can create extraparking instead, as that is what local residentstell us they need". Cllr Lee Hunt and MargaretAdair made representations to the city's trafficbosses to shorten yellow lines where it issensible and safe to do so - this has created56 EXTRA spaces already.

“We will continue to challenge planningapplications that do not have parking, we willnot always win the case" says Cllr Hunt, "...butwe will always do our best - by working withlocal residents we can improve things foreveryone, including those without a car".
