From the Project Chair

Vitini Edhard O. Idemne, M.Eng’g., R.E.E.

Hello! Greetings from Central Philippine University which we fondly call home and has been literally a “home” to me (living in the campus) for about two decades of half a century and two years now.

In this place which you are about to see once more, may I invite you to sing along with the videoke, or play on the piano / keyboard the old familiar tunes that have surely inspired your hearts and to help you reminisce the times when you studied and frolicked in this “Lovely Campus Spot in Iloilo”. Did you sweat it out in the fields and courts during U-day or inter-school competitions, so that you could “score for Central”? Have you learned much inside and outside of the classrooms because “here we prepare, learning to share” as “Centralite”s”? Did you meet your sweetheart in the “love-rary” (oops! Library?) and whispered “faithful we will be, Always “ ? Were your talents honed in the various U-day Literary and Musical contests? Did you receive Jesus into your heart in this place where “all Central students learn to walk with God?” Whatever our experiences maybe, surely these are now “treasures ours who are Central’s, golden chains that bind us too” in the “Central Spirit”. Let us bring this heritage beyond compare of the “Gold and Blue” wherever we go, and share them for God’s greatest glory.

On behalf of the committee for the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage through our university songs, I’m grateful to our University President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles for his inspiring support to this project and to the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA) for funding this endeavor. The efforts of Mr. Donald Lebrilla, Mr. Rodrigo Sotto, for the music rendering as well as those of Mr. Jenmark Calumba, Mr. Dante Manguito, lay-out and printing respectively, and Prof. Anna May A. Yap-Zerrudo for proofreading this book, beyond the call (and hours) of duty are greatly appreciated. Our heartfelt thanks to Ms. Vivian Vail Endriga who sounded forth the need and call of the alumni abroad for the music and lyrics of their beloved Central songs every time the various chapters gather for a reunion. May these songs help us to be true to our Alma Mater and keep its honor dear, our “Central My Central”.

Lastly and most of all, thanks be to God for the Centralian legacy passed on to me by my late mother, Señora Nellie Occeño de Idemne (former Head of the Spanish Department). She gave her life’s best years serving God through this prestigious and noble institution. Her example of loyalty and devotion is a legacy that my wife Rona and I are passing on to our children, Eleanel Ruthvirl and Danielle Virl, who are also studying here at CPU. And so from our hearts to all your hearts in the Chapter or Global Reunions, and to those who return to CPU for the U-Day and Homecoming celebrations, as well as the future generations of Centralians / Centralites – may you enjoy and treasure these sights and sounds of our “The Story of Central: Songs through the Years” God bless Central Philippine University and us all!

FOREWORD

The Story of Central: Songs through the YearsCOFFEE TABLE BOOK & VIDEOKE

CPU songs were penned and sung since the first decade of the 1900’s and inspired many Centralians even through the ravages of the Second World War. The Central Spirit flamed even stronger with the sacrifices of the Hopevale martyrs. Standing for the faith that is manifest in our Central Spirit, they proved “true blue”. Let these songs therefore be part of the golden chain that binds all Centralians, the young and old, those far and near.

As the years went by, the developments in electronics made the production of music videos possible, and in 2005, during the celebration of CPU’s Centenary , the production of the “Songs of Central” in videoke form with the use of VCD’s was made possible.

This 2017 edition which is entitled The Story of Central: Songs through the Years is also in videoke form set to a DVD format to which we can sing along. With this 2017 Coffee Table Book and DVD edition, we would be able to sing our CPU songs with simple piano or guitar accompaniment. A more relaxing way is to sing along with the videoke DVD while enjoying the pictures of Central.

It is endeavored that with this new album, our alumni will enjoy singing our songs and reliving the past while the students at Central will be taught of these “old melodies” that will help keep the rich cultural heritage and the flame of the Central Spirit alive in our hearts.

CENTRAL PHILIPPINE UNIVERSITYOffice of the President

Jaro, Iloilo City

We are thankful to the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA) for funding an important project—the preservation of our legacy and culture through the music of the men and women of Central Philippine University. For many years, we have accumulated quite a number of musical pieces created purposely for our university.

This project is indeed timely, so that 100 years from now, we can look back and say we really have preserved our culture even though the format at this time may not be the same as later on. So hopefully, with the different kinds of recording, this legacy will be transmitted from one generation to another. This project consists of a recording of songs with lyrics, songs with only the music and an album that contains all the musical scores for somebody who understands notes to be able to interpret it. Also with the technology now, DVD recordings of this project are made available, so that we can preserve this important heritage from our predecessors.

So with this available music in different formats, all those who love our dear Central can surely avail of these and pass on the Central Spirit that we have experienced here at CPU and wherever alumni abound.

TEODORO C. ROBLES. Ph.D.President

Lilies ‘long the pathway edgesMemory will review;

White and pure your lifted faces,Modest, tender, true,

May we, when in distant places,Keep as white and pure as you!

Here’s a pledge we’ve made to CentralHer loyal daughters to be;

And a womanhood potential,Trained for service free;

So we make our proclamationAnd equal just decree,
