AFRICAN PERCUSSION

OCC African Percussion Ensemble Jen Vacanti, Vinnie Ludovico and Rob Bridge, directors

Troy Fitchette, Chris Woodruff & Zach Bolton, student directors

Kpanlogo Ga traditional

Traditional recreational and social dance of the Ga people of Ghana. The words to the song mean: "humble yourself and the world will be humble.

Tenfold Layne Redmond

"Tenfold" is one of several improvisatory pieces Layne Redmond composed while exploring ecstatic trance dance rhythms from many cultures. The

rhythms in this meditative composition evolved out of the unique sound of the frame drum, the world's oldest known drum used for thousands of years in

religious and trance rituals. It is the oldest means for altering states of consciousness for spiritual purposes through sound. "Tenfold" is based on

rhythms in ten over a pulse of four and can also be performed with 2riqs (Middle Eastern style tambourines).

Nubian Raquy Danziger

On a recent trip to Egypt, Raquy hung out with a great group of Nubians. They brought her to hear real Nubian music and here is a wonderful pattern for frame

drum, dumbek and clapping that she learned and plays in her shows!

Gammala Ewe Tribe

This is a processional piece for five “gankogui” (African bells.) This piece strikes at the heart of the African aesthetic in music: it features five different

Page 4: Central New York Day of Percussion April 24, 2010 Storer ...myhome.sunyocc.edu/~bridger/eventsarchive/programs/cnydop10.pdf · Central New York Day of Percussion April 24, 2010 Storer

rhythms that interlock and create a beautiful texture and it requires the listener to actively participate. At any given time the listener should be able to discern rhythmic groupings of 2, 3, 4, or 6 notes. Likewise, they are always more than

one of these groupings happening simultaneously. It is also interesting to consider that the western concept of “one” (or a definite downbeat) is not used in this music. The cross rhythms are interesting and the various relationships, from one rhythm to another, create beautiful melodies. You as the listener can

hear as much, or as little, as you wish. Enjoy!

Gota Dahomey traditional

“Gota” is a dance for wedding parties and as such is a happy dance. It is also a somewhat flirtatious dance. Today, Gota is performed for social entertainment. The synchronized stops and starts of the drums and dancers lend the dance an

air of suspense and excitement.

The instruments used in this piece are from the Ewe tribe in Ghana. The bell, gankogui, is considered the engine and it supplies the power for the other

players. The kaganu is the road and it should open up for the ensemble. The kidi (in this case paired with a lower drum) is the driver and he

is responsible to maintain the engine and stay with the road. The sogo and the atsimevu are passengers in this piece they have various experiences and

provide the “call” the stops and starts the motion.

The drums in this ensemble are primarily played with sticks or a combination of stick and hand. The stick strokes used are: open strokes; muffled or “dead” stokes; rim shots and hitting the shell of the drum. The hand strokes are: bass;

open; muffled; and the occasional slap.

MARCHING PERCUSSION

Baldwinsville Indoor Percussion

Do you remember when you were in school? Who were the Jocks and Punks? The Nerds had their books, the Preps had their clothes. And why were the Band

Geeks so strange?

The Baldwinsville Indoor Percussion is proud to present our 2010 show "School". The show is inspired by our lives as students and we ask that you

spend a day in our shoes, or at least the next 5 minutes.

Page 6: Central New York Day of Percussion April 24, 2010 Storer ...myhome.sunyocc.edu/~bridger/eventsarchive/programs/cnydop10.pdf · Central New York Day of Percussion April 24, 2010 Storer

OCC Indoor Drumline

“Lose Yourself”

Our 2010 show "Lose Yourself.." is based on life's social barriers and the constant need for each individual to find ones self. From an early age, we are placed in groups to play and learn together. However, these groups constantly evolve over time and we can easily find ourselves all alone with no direction, without warning. This is when we are all challenged to find a new path from

the one we have lost...

The OCC Indoor Drumline traveled to both the Dayton and Mullica Hill WGI Regionals this year as well the continuing their participation in the New

York State Percussion Circuit. The ensemble also traveled to Dayton Ohio to compete in the WGI Indoor

Percussion World Championships.

STEEL BAND

River Rat Rhythm Project Steel Drum Band Dan Hammond, director (Sponsored by Best Western of Watertown)

The River Rat Rhythm Project Steel Drum Band consists of almost 50

members, ages 6 - 66, in 4 different performing groups. Group members are children and adults from the Watertown and 1000 Islands areas. Originally

conceived in 2002 as a percussion ensemble featuring students from the Alexandria and Morristown school districts, the group changed its artistic

direction when Mr. Richard Alexander, then owner of the Best Western Carriage House Inn of Watertown donated four instruments to establish a steel band. RRRP plays traditional island tunes and contemporary arrangements for steel band. They always bring a little sunshine with them when they play, and

invite you to join them for some barefoot dancing in the sand!
