MEDICAL CODING

Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) AcademyThere is a new role in healthcare information management called a Clin-ical Documentation Improvement Specialist (CDIS), Clinical Documen-tation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP), and/or Clinical Documentation Improvement RN. These specialists provide a vital educational link be-tween physicians and medical coders. This role has emerged in response to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Diagnostic-Re-lated Group system (DRGs) initiatives to improve reporting of inpatient data and reimbursement to the hospital system.

According to a report by the AHIMA Foundation, the number of job post-ings for CDS jobs increased from 3,594 in 2007 to 8,039 in 2011, for a 223 percent increase in the number of job postings. As of 2011, the CDS role had the third highest number of job postings, following only coders and health information technicians. Finally, data show that CDS was the second fastest growing job title (633 in 2007 to 1,317 in 2011) in the health informatics area, second only to clinical analyst.20 eduperspectives.ahima.org.

Now is the time to become specialized in clinical documentation im-provement!

The ideal candidate for CNM CDI Academy is an RN with at least two years of bedside nursing within the last five years, or is an RHIT, or RHIA with a coding certification and at least two years inpatient medical cod-ing experience. These RNs and/or medical coders are experts in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, are business-minded, analytical, detail oriented, are good communicators and problem solvers. Candi-dates must also be able to pass a criminal background check. Instruc-tors will provide face to face classroom practice and discussion time in addition to online assignments. There are quizzes and final exams to demonstrate competency in the class content.

Participants will be required to purchase their own 3M system access and bring recommended textbooks. A list will be provided by the in-structor.

NEW! ICD-10 PCS $699

A joint effort between the healthcare provider and the medical coder is essential to achieve complete and accurate documentation, code assign-ment, and reporting of diagnoses and procedures for many reasons. In addition, assigning ICD-10-PCS (procedure codes) is required under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) starting on October 1, 2015 for hospital inpatient healthcare settings. What is new with the new ICD-10 procedure coding system? ICD-10 provides signif-icant improvements through greater detailed information. For example, ICD-10 PCS uses 7 alpha or numeric digits while the ICD-9-CM coding system uses only 3 or 4 numeric digits. And in the case of angioplasty, ICD-9 PCS has one code. With ICD-10 there are 854 codes to choose from specifying body part, approach, and device. Note: This class is one of three required for the Clinical Documentation Improvement Academy for RNs and/or experienced medical coders in addition to the 90 hour practicum. However, it may be taken by either audience as a stand alone class. Participants will need to bring their own recommended books and required access codes to the 3M system. IPC J Standard $899

IPC J-STD-001, Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies, has emerged as the preeminent authority for electronics assembly manufacturing worldwide. The standard describes materials, methods and verification criteria for producing high-quality soldered leaded and lead-free interconnections. It emphasizes process control and establishes industry consensus requirements for a broad range of electronic connections. IPC J-STD-001F is recognized worldwide as the sole industry-consensus standard covering soldering materials and pro-cesses. This revision includes support for both traditional solder alloys and for lead-free manufacturing. Examples of some of the significant changes are revision to plated-through hole, PTH, minimum fill require-ments; criteria for two new SMT termination types; and expanded con-formal coating criteria. Whenever possible, the criteria descriptions have been adjusted to make them easier to understand for materials, methods and verification for producing quality soldered interconnections and as-semblies. Upon successful completion of the course and a course for the written examinations, you will receive an IPC Worker Proficiency Certif-icate and are registered with the IPC (Institute of Interconnecting and Packaging Electronic Circuits). Prerequisite: some soldering experience and successful completion of the open and closed book examinations. Note: This course is offered at the CNM Workforce Training Center.

IPC-610E Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies $899

IPC-A-610 is the most widely used electronics assembly standard in the world. A must for all quality assurance and assembly departments, IPC-A-610F illustrates industry-accepted workmanship criteria for electron-ics assemblies through detailed statements reflecting acceptable and defect conditions, supported by full-color photographs and illustrations. This revision includes two new SMT termination styles, as well as chang-es in plated-through hole fill and BGA void criteria. Additionally, wher-ever possible statements were modified to make readability easier and to enhance understanding - all without eliminating any requirements. Major topics include flex attachment, board-in-board, part-on-part, both lead-free and tin-lead criteria, component orientation and soldering cri-teria for through hole, SMT, cleaning, marking, coating and laminate requirements. IPC-A-610 is invaluable for all inspectors, operators and trainers. Revision F has 814 photos and illustrations of acceptability criteria - 86 of them new or updated. The document synchronizes to the requirements expressed in other industry consensus documents and is most often used with the material and process standard IPC J-STD-001F. Upon successful completion of this class you will receive an IPC 610F certification. Note: This course is offered at the CNM Workforce Training Center.
