Sunday School is for EVERYONE. This is a wonderful opportunity for every-

one in the church to spend about 45 minutes in a class with other students to

learn more about the Bible, as well as topics and issues that we face as Chris-

tians.

When Sunday school was started in the late 1700s, it was to provide education

for children and youth who did not have access to education, because many chil-

dren worked during the week. It was the place where reading, writing, and arith-

metic were taught. As schools began to be established and education was acces-

sible to all, then Sunday school became the place of faith and Biblical instruction

for children, youth, and adults.

Sunday school continues to be an opportunity for all ages to continue to grow in Biblical knowledge and

understanding. It is also the place where we can grow in our relationships with one another, as well as

connect our daily lives with our faith.

This year, there will be several classes for children as well as three classes for adults. Everyone is en-

couraged to be a part of a class and to grow in your knowledge as well as grow in your relationships in

the church.

Our children will be continuing with the Growing in Grace and Gratitude curriculum.

Preschool children will meet in the Café room (203) upstairs. The teachers are Terry Parks, Terri Davis,

and Linda Waldron.

Elementary children will meet in the Tent Commandments Room (205). The teachers are Sandy Wil-

son and Laraine Williams with Ivy Ritchie as the substitute.

The Youth will meet in the downstairs Café (Room 8), and will be having conversations about the ser-

mon as well as topics. The teachers are Josie Russell and Mary Wampler with Gena Prince as substitute.

Adults:

Contemporary Issues Class meets in Room 100 and is led by John Dodge and Tim Landis. This fall

they are looking at the book Strangers and Friends at the Welcome Table: Contemporary Christianities

in the American South. This rich, warm book wears its learning lightly, telling fascinating stories of di-

versity in the expression of contemporary Christianities in the South. While Christianity continues to

dominate the culture of the southern states, Christianities represent many different kinds of people.

The Parlor Bible Study Class (Room 104) will continue in using the International Standard Commen-

tary. Copies are available in the office for $20. The conversation leaders are Lois Clarke, Donnie

Spurell, Carolynn Anderson, and Jenna Wagner. This year’s book starts with Genesis.

The Small Dining Room Class (Room 107) will be looking at two series: Short Stories by Jesus: The

Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi by Amy-Jill Levine, which looks at radical and provoca-

tive messages of the parables that Jesus told. Then later in the fall, this class will use Fear of the Other

by Will Wilimon, who invites students to consider the gospel command to love (and not merely tolerate)

those considered to be “Other” or outside mainstream Christian culture. The leaders for this class are

Monica Alderman and Allen Harris.

SESSION NOTES The Session met on August 28. Excused were Lois Clarke, Tom Parsons, Lea Powers, and David White. INFORMATION: Co-Pastors’ vacation will be Sept 24 to October 1. Brian Alderman is preaching on Sept 30. We are moving to a cloud-based church database software. This will allow easy online giving and provide a

mobile app. This should be up by the stewardship time. The church received generous donations that met the needs for a new A/C unit in Central Hall. Thank you to

all who gave. ACTIONS OF SESSION: Passed the incorporation papers and other motions related to this by a unanimous vote. We will send thanks

to Ken Hale for all his work on this project. Sunday School teachers and curriculum were approved. Hired Leslie Mumpower, a teacher in APPLE, as nursery worker. She will do Wednesday nights and work with

Courtney Reece on Sundays. A donation box from Haven of Rest will be placed at Central. Communion dates and special services were approved for 2018-19. We will continue to rope off the back five pews in the sanctuary.

We are seeking new ways to connect the fam-ily of faith here at Central. NEW WEBSITE: www.CentralPresBristol.org Check out the new site and the new welcome videos.

FACEBOOK Follow our Facebook page: Central Presbyterian Church Over the next months we will be moving into new ways of keeping the connection. We will have a mobile app that will allow you to keep up with all the news, as well as easily give online. You will be able to access and update your personal profile, as well as check your giving statement at any time. Is there anyone who would do Instagram for the church? If you are willing, please talk to Frank Aichinger.
