Perennial SaleApril 28, 2018 at 9amIf you’d like to support Hubbard Hall and give/ get some great perennials for your garden, come to our annual perennials sale. People who bring freshly dug perennials to donate may begin “shopping” any time after 7 am, otherwise the shopping begins at 9 am and is done by 11. There will be knowledgeable people on hand to help you make good choices for your particular site and garden needs. These are the best bargains of the season AND you help Hubbard Hall keep art and community happening.

Rites of Spring GalaMay 19, 2018 at 6pmJoin us for our annual Rites of Spring Gala, our biggest fundraiser of the year and a time to come together and celebrate our swing into spring! There’ll be, as always, a delicious dinner by Sal & Piper Catering, a silent auction for some amazing prizes, gorgeous music provided by David Cuite’s Freight Yard Quartet and a relaxed atmosphere of community and camaraderie.

This class is suitable for older children who have had at least 2 years of ballet training, and for adults with some ballet experience. The focus will be on refining body placement and strengthening technique, while experiencing an energizing workout. Carefully selected choreography from classic ballets will be occasionally included during center work to provide challenge, inspiration, and a deeper understanding of classical ballet.

This class is for those interested in pursuing an in-depth experience of classical ballet training and will focus on exercises to develop strength in the feet, lower legs, and core to dance on pointe. Pre-pointe students will wear pre-pointe shoes that will not allow them to go on pointe, but in doing similar exercises as the full pointe students do, will further prepare them for full pointe as their technique strengthens. At least 2 years of ballet instruction is necessary, as well as permission of the instructor. If new to pointe work, please do not purchase shoes without contacting the instructor through Hubbard Hall first.

At this age, there is an increase in a child’s attention span that allows them to stay focused for longer periods of time. This class focuses on perfecting ballet techniques through barre work, centre work, and allegro work (jumping). Greatest emphasis is placed on correct positions and an increase in intricate steps and combinations. The beauty and grace of body movements in ballet will begin to form at this level.

Inspired by the musical films of India, Bollywood dance is a dynamic blend of east and west, incorporating movements and influences as diverse as classical Indian dance and folk traditions, hip-hop, Caribbean, and Arabic dance. Following an energetic full-body warmup, students are encouraged to work together and individually to explore Bollywood-inspired choreography in more depth. Key elements of the style include foot rhythms, hand gestures (mudras), and expressive movement. Emphasis will be on performance quality, effective use of space/timing/energy, accuracy of shapes & rhythms, and adapting movements as part of a group as we create a routine to be performed at the annual Dance Showcase. FALL 2017 INSTRUCTORS

INSTRUCTORSZaidee Bliss (Wednesday Yoga) Considering her early interest in ballet and figure skating, it is not surprising that Zaidee Bliss found her way to yoga as an adult. That first class was so reminiscent of her ballet years that it felt like coming home. Her natural inclination, skill and experience as a teacher led her along the path to becoming a yoga instructor. Zaidee is certified as a Kripalu yoga teacher and has since completed the 200-hour Anusara teacher training as well as a certification as a Yoga Ed teacher. Her classes are designed to suit the needs and levels of her students. She pays special attention to correct alignment in order to more safely enhance her student’s practice.

Carman Bogle (Pre-Ballet, Intro to Ballet) studied ballet as a child and through her teenage years in Rutland, Vermont where she performed in The Nutcracker with Ballet Manchester at the Smith Center and The Dorset Playhouse. After becoming a wife and mother, Carman continued to enjoy a love of dance, using her skills as a cheerleading coach and for various church & community events/benefits. Carman joined the Hubbard Hall faculty in 2014 and says the experience has been “a true honor and privilege.”

Fern Bradley (Pre-Flurry Contra Dance Workshops) is a regional favorite dance caller and instructor in the Hudson Valley and Capital Region. New and experienced dancers alike appreciate her relaxed teaching style, her warm voice, and her knack for choosing dances that are just the right fit for the mix of dancers on the floor.

Elizabeth Call (Advanced Beginning Ballet, Beginning Pointe) studied ballet in California with Faith Heidemann, Alexandra Kosloff, Mia Slavenska, and Kira Ivanovsky. She danced in several regional ballet companies there: Ballet Fantasque, Ballet Etc., and LA Ballet. In New York she did concert work in various dance styles and continued her ballet studies with Gus Dick Andros, Julia Simmone, and Nanette Charisse. She taught ballet at the Poppenhusen Institute in Queens, and at Lycee Francais, and Broadway Dance Center in Manhattan. Elizabeth has been a licensed acupuncturist for 22 years and is able to use her training in anatomy to aid students in correct placement and form. She maintains a private acupuncture practice in Greenwich, NY.

Scott Carrino (Tai Ji and Qi Gong) has studied Taoism and Tai Ji as a method of centering and as a metaphor for life for the past 31 years. Teaching Yang Style solo, two-person, sabre and sword forms since 1986, he has cultivated an integrated understanding of chi (vital energy) and the mysteries and power of the Tao. He is a teaching member of the Living Tao Foundation for the past fifteen years, and published their newsletter for 10 years. Scott is a founding member of Pompanuck Farm and co-owner of Roundhouse Bakery and Cafe.

Gina Mammone Deibel (Bollywood & BollyX) studied classical Indian dance (Odissi style) and various folk traditions for 10 years with guru Ranjanaa Devi and performed with Nataraj Performing Arts based in Hadley, MA. Her background in dance also includes jazz, modern, tap, ballet, flamenco, Middle Eastern, lindy-hop, and yoga. She is a certified BollyX instructor, member of daCi (Dance and the Child International), holds degrees in Childhood Education and Television/Film Studies from Boston University, has taught in the US and the UK, and has performed throughout the Northeast.

Elizabeth Dunn (Open Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Supported Yoga) is a licensed massage therapist and yoga teacher who trained with Shiva Rea at Kripalu and graduated in 2012 from the year-long intensive Urban Zen Integrative Therapy program. Elizabeth has taught yoga in a variety of settings and through her experience with yoga and massage she has been exposed to a wide range of people and their needs. Elizabeth has volunteered in hospice, traveled to Haiti to work with hospitals, patients, doctors, and caregivers through yoga and integrative therapy, taught yoga in the Sandy Hook school to teachers who survived the Newtown tragedy, and worked with artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Toby Keith, and others. Elizabeth’s classes are a simple blend of yoga, breath awareness, body scan, aromatherapy, and reiki.

Rebecca Dragon (Fundamentals of Acting) was raised on Capitol Hill, in Washington DC, and grew up in the theater. She was trained in dance, acting, and voice at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop. At the University of Massachusetts, she majored in Theater with a focus on performance with a penchant for voice training, and was trained in Suzuki with Stage West. Since graduating, she performed, but has shifted her focus to teaching voice and acting. She is a homeschooling mom to three Hubbard Hall Irish Step Dancers.

Alan Epstein (Bluegrass Jam) has played mandolin and sung in bluegrass bands in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Aside from private teaching, he’s taught workshops and at camps in Michigan and at Bluegrass Week at Augusta (WV). Jacquie West Farbman (Gyrokinesis®) is a certified Gyrokinesis instructor with an M.A. degree in Movement Sciences from Columbia University. As a professional dancer she performed with Charles Weidman Dance Theatre and other companies in NY and California. She taught modern dance and ballet at a performing arts high school for 25 years and teaches dance at Ocean County College, NJ. Recently she performed in Global Water Dances at the Jersey shore and in a solo dance to the poetry of Bonnie Hoag at Hubbard Hall.

Kyra Fitzgerald (Youth Chorale) is graduate of the College of Saint Rose with a degree in Music Education with a concentration in vocal music. She has always had a love for music, joining every chorus, choir, and other vocal ensemble she could. She has directed the CCS Drama Club for the past 4 years, and is looking forward to starting her third year with the Hubbard Hall Youth Chorale. She has been part of the Hubbard Hall community for over three years both at a desk and onstage, most recently seen in Othello and Peter and the Starcatcher.

Alan Haskell (Karate) has studied martial arts since 1983 and has seen first-hand the many benefits of proper martial arts training for both young and older students. Sensei Haskell holds the rank of Sandan (3rd Degree Black Belt) and has placed multiple times in competitions of Kata (forms) and Sparring. He has taught in the Cambridge area for many years and Hubbard Hall is honored to welcome Sensei Haskell to our faculty.

Darcy May (Irish Step) is a 1985 graduate of the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. She studied Irish Dance as a child at Fay and O’Connell School of Irish Dance in Pearl River, NY, and danced with Wild Irish Acres of Saratoga Springs. Darcy has taught at Hubbard Hall since 2004. She also illustrates children’s books.

Gabi Moore (Visual Arts) is an artist and teacher with over 15 years experience leading art workshops for people of all ages. She holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the Graduate School of Figurative Art from the New York Academy of Art in New York City. Teaching for eleven years at Fordham University, Gabi led courses in Anatomical Drawing, Painting, and Drawing. Since she moved to Cambridge in 2000, she has taught at Hubbard Hall and the Community Center at the Salem Court House. Gabi continues to work on her own figurative art, painting people in quiet moments, between actions, observed as they interact in outdoor spaces. Gabi lives in the village of Cambridge with her 2 children.

Lindsay Shaner (Creative Movement, Ballerina Princess) received her B.S. in Dance from Radford University, graduating with honors. Since then, she has performed professionally with Footworks Percusive Dance Ensemble and spent the past 15 years teaching. While she has experience teaching, ballet, tap, jazz, modern, pointe, and hip hop, Lindsay’s focus and passion for the last several years has been teaching creative movement and ballet to 2-5 year olds.
