Message from the Executive Director
Dear KASC Members, Happy New Year! In the past couple of months, you were asked to nominate and elect a new Member Director to the Board of Directors. Announcing on behalf of Karl Leck, the current Member Director who oversaw the nomination and election process, the candidate who won the election is Marge Laigaie. Please join the Board of Directors and staff in congratulating her and please be supportive because she will be working diligently on your behalf for the next few years! Please also join us in thanking the other candidates who ran for the office: Barbara Holmes, Mary Ann Piccard and Gustave Teipelke. Thank you for participating. As you know, our membership year starts January 1. If you didn’t receive a renewal letter, please call 610-444-4819 and speak with Aretha Rochester, our Receptionist, so that we can send you a new letter with a return envelope. Please make sure we have your correct address. If you had already sent in your membership renewal before receiving the letter, we apologize for not catching that and thank you for renewing early! We appreciate your steadfast dedication to the senior center! Warm regards, Anita M. O’Connor
Thank You This is the time when we reflect on all of our fundraisers, events, activities, programs, and celebrations that we enjoyed in 2018. The success we experienced in the past year was due not only to staff’s dedication and planning but to the hard work and enthusiasm of all our amazing volunteers.
Lunches at the KASC
KASC meals are provided by the Chester County Department of Aging Services Congregate Meal Program. The monthly menu is published in the newsletter and posted at the Center. Membership is not required in order for individuals 60 and over to participate in this program. All residents 60 and older are invited to attend and enjoy a noontime meal. There is no cost to you for the meal, but you must contact KASC to reserve your meal by 3pm Tuesday for the entire following week of meal service. A voluntary, confidential contribution of $2.00 is applied to the meal’s cost and returned to CCDAS. The official registration and financial information of Chester County Department of Aging Services may be obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of State by calling toll free, within Pennsylvania, 1(800)732-0999. Registration does not imply endorsement.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Lunch must be consumed at the Senior Center. We discourage seniors from taking food home due to health risks from spoiled food.
Anyone ordering a meal who is under the age of 60 must pay full price, which is now $4.89.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Information and Assistance Department KASC Scholarship Fund
KASC offers certain special events for which a fee is required. Through the generosity of an anonymous donor the KASC Scholarship Fund was created. The main purpose is to serve those KASC members who cannot pay the fee in order to participate, and/or to have part of their membership dues paid. You may be eligible if your income is $20,036 or less for one person or $26,955 for a couple. Assistance is available when there are funds. All information will be kept private. If you want to apply for this fund, contact Lizabeth Conners at 610-444-4819. Donations towards this scholarship fund are greatly appreciated.
MEMBERS KEY TAG
PLEASE NOTE for access to the following programs: For the YMCA facilities (pool, track, fitness room) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00-3:00pm, there is a new sign-in procedure for KASC members. Please show your KASC 2019 salmon (orange) key tag, fill out an application, have your photo taken (for informational purposes), and then you will receive an electronic key tag to be swiped at the front desk at each visit. For the AquaCrosslands and AquaKendal swim programs you need to have your KASC 2019 salmon key tag and to have registered with Andrea. Stop by the office to update your membership. Membership is now based on a calendar year. Your 2019 membership is due January 1st and is valid through December 31st, 2019. (Just $35.00)

Medicare News: Do I have to pay anything for my
Annual Wellness Visit?
The Annual Wellness Visit is one of the many preventive services that Medicare covers for free. If you have Original Medicare, you will pay no coinsurance or deductible for the Annual Wellness Visit and other preventive care services, as long as you see a health care provider who accepts Medicare assignment. This means that the doctor cannot charge you more than the Medicare-approved amount for services you receive. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you will pay no coinsurance/copayment or deductible for any preventive service that is free for people with Original Medicare, as long as you see an in-network provider. The Annual Wellness Visit is a Medicare-covered preventive screening, and no cost-sharing applies. However, if your provider investigates or treats a symptom during your Annual Wellness Visit, this care is not part of the visit, and you may be responsible for certain costs. During your Annual Wellness Visit, you will discuss your plan of preventive care for the coming year. This visit is similar to your Welcome to Medicare visit in that it continues to examine your health and update your preventive care plan. As part of your Annual Wellness Visit, your provider may:
Update your health-risk assessment Update your medical and family history Check your weight and blood pressure Update your list of current medical providers and
suppliers Screen for cognitive issues Update your screening schedule from previous
wellness visits Update your list of risk factors and conditions and
the care that you are receiving or that is recommended
Provide health advice and referrals to health education or preventive counseling programs

Do you remember the advertising campaign for milk that asked “Got Milk?” We need to ask ourselves “Got water?” Drinking water is very important for each of us especially for the senior population. In addition to losing our sense of thirst as we age, some medications cause our bodies’ water supply to be depleted. Our bodies are three-fourths water so we need to continuously flush fresh water through. Some experts remind us to drink “8 by 8”. Drinking eight glasses of fluids each day can keep us hydrated, increase energy, regulate body temperature and carry nutrients throughout the bloodstream. Water, juices and milk can count towards our number of glasses of beverages each day, but not alco-hol or beverages with caffeine. Many foods have water in them like apples, tomatoes and cucumbers. It is important to speak with your doctor about how much water you should drink and check if you need to regulate your water intake. Perhaps in the New Year we can each commit to drinking 1-2 more glasses of water a day. Tufts University Center on Nutrition redesigned the USDA Food Pyramid to include eight glasses of water as the foun-dation for the pyramid as a reminder of the importance of drinking plenty of fluids. At KASC, we encourage our ASP friends to drink water. Do you do this for yourself?

You’re never too old to have fun! Creativity and imagination is key to sharing life experiences, bringing back fond memories! Really, all that’s needed is a willingness to play and share your stories and build lasting friendships as well!
Jan is a professional actress (SAG/AFTRA) and the Founder and Executive Director of Arts Holding Hands & Hearts (AHHAH!) a non-profit that empowers youth, strengthens families, and mobilizes communities through mindfulness and expressive arts in the sharing of life histories. Since 2005 Jan has facilitated a weekly Living History Storytelling Project here at the center. She also started an intergenerational project called Hands Across the Ages where seniors from KASC and students from the Kennett High School came together to share stories and build community.
This program is supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Staying Safe from the Ingenuity of Identity Thefts by Gemma Morrison, KASC Office Assistant
We have all heard the obvious robotic voice we hang up on at home or the email from some “prince” who wants to give us money. Attempts at identity theft and fraud are rampant in each of our lives but many still fall victim to these crimes. In recent studies seniors as a population were found to lose at least $3 billion annually from fraud. For seniors, the most dominant ways a criminal will attempt to get your money are through telephone and internet scams. Both of these schemes will attempt to get your PII, personally identifiable information, with which they can cause any amount of damage from filing to receive your benefits, to buying a car with under your name and credit card. Needless to say it is important to recognize a scam and protect yourself against them.
The following are major pieces of your PII that need to be protected Full name Personal identification numbers – social security, passport, driver’s license, and patient identification
numbers Financial information – bank account number and credit card number Street address Personal phone numbers and email addresses
Scams may not always be obvious so always stay on the lookout for these scams and take these cautionary steps before giving away your information or money.
Phone calls - Do not give money over the phone. The best way to avoid the problem is to not let it be created in the first place. If a caller you do not recognize claims to be your bank, Credit Card Company, the IRS, or another government official, call them with the telephone number you already have. You are not obligated to hand over any precious information without being sure it is required of you.
Email - never open email links or attachments even if the sender seems legitimate. If you get an email from what looks like your bank you can always go to the website by typing in the URL yourself which will ensure security for your information and for your computer which can hold your information.
Social Media - as scary as it is to think about we do not always know who we think we are talking to on social media. If a friend requests money, your social security number, your passwords, try to call them and double check that they were the ones asking, not an impersonator.
Mailing - There have been cases where illegitimate companies send out requests stating someone is overdue for a certain amount of money promised to their charity which does not exist at all. Always be cautious of sending away bank information and keep track of what groups you give money to if you are unable to remember so you cannot be taken advantage of. Also, when discarding mail, medical documents, receipts, or anything that has PII information on it,
shred it first! It may seem unlikely but there are criminals who will fish through your recycling or trash to get information that they can use to take money from you or your identity.
Banking – Frequently review your bank and credit cards statements and call your provider if transactions are unfamiliar to you. Using direct deposit for Social Security or other benefit checks makes it much harder for them to be
stolen. A lot can be said about identity fraud, if you are looking for more information use this URL to dig deeper
