Designed entirely by physicians andnurses working in emergency care, ourprogramme can be tailored to your specificfocus and three of these routes areoutlined below. Teaching is on-line, andbased around a virtual hospital withproblem based learning, online lectures,tutorials, web links and online discussionswith your colleagues and fellow students.

The course is made up of two phases.Phase One provides a variety of core andelective modules from which you canselect a personalised route for academicassessment. The units depend on theroute you wish to follow and the electiveunits chosen build on this to exploreparticular interests. Units are offered on a rolling programme so over the course of your study, almost all units are likely to be available.

Students are able to choose to study toPostgraduate Certificate or PostgraduateDiploma level or to continue their studiesto achieve a Masters level qualification.

To be considered for entry to thisprogramme, candidates must currently beworking as either a registered medicalpractitioner or nurse in an area of urgentor emergency care and successfullycomplete an interview with one of theadmissions tutors, (usually by telephone).Students for whom English is a secondlanguage must hold IELTS (language test)and achieve the Academic Standard at 7.0or above, prior to admissions onto theprogramme Other specific practicerequirements are in place for Paediatricand Military Emergency Medicineroutes.

The PGCert Emergency Managementhas been developed for those senior staffin emergency departments who may havecompleted their professional training butwant a postgraduate qualification whichreflects their management function.Students on this route will be required toundertake three management units:Human Resource Management in theEmergency Department; Legal Aspects ofEmergency Medicine; and Managing theEmergency Department.

If you choose the Education routethough this programme you will bring60 credits to the programme in the form of a Postgraduate Certificate inEducation at level 7. You will completethe core requirements for Phase 1 of thisprogramme and will be able to exit atthat point with an award of a PGDipEmergency Medicine (with Education) or proceed to Phase 2 to be consideredfor the award of MSc EmergencyMedicine (with Education).

Students who wish to focus on MajorIncident Management will bring 60credits to the programme in the form of a Postgraduate Certificate in HealthIncident Command and undertake 60credits of core units, exiting with apostgraduate diploma or continuing to phase 2 of the programme.

This course is managed online. Thecourse team and library and othercampus facilities are based at ElizabethGaskell Campus, which is situated onHathersage Road opposite theManchester Royal Infirmary.

The academic and professionalrequirements for acceptance onto singleunits within the programme are that thestudent must:

• possess a relevant professionalqualification (which may notnecessarily be as a registered medicalpractitioner);

• be practising or have practiced in anarea of urgent or emergency care;

• have at least 2 years practicalexperience;

• have evidence of recent study withinthe higher education framework.

Phase two is a dissertation, requiring apresentation of a substantial practitionerproject in the field of emergency medicinein an area of your choice.

This final piece of work will include:

• A clinical topic review

• A Project report

• A draft paper for publication
