SILBURY HILL Boxted-based folk-rock duo Silbury Hill have recently released a new CD featuring a song inspired by one of the WW1 Fallen of the village. “This noble Man” is a song based on Walter Denny, who lost his life in the 1917 Battle of Arras. The album “Justice of the Rowan” features twelve songs, mostly written by the local duo, and has been featured on BBC Radio Suffolk.

CHILDREN’S SOCIETY A total of £1,517 was gathered in at this year’s opening of the Children’s Society home collection boxes. £801 came from the Boxted boxes and £716 from the Langham ones. This sum is of course in addition to Christmas’s church collections of £344. The Society’s local representatives express their sincere thanks to everyone concerned for their very generous support during the past year. Anyone who would care to join this great effort by taking a collection box in which to put small change at their own home is cordially asked to contact; Gill Pullen (Boxted, 273804) or Helen Sims (Langham, 321284).

Boxted Lodgers Youth FC, the junior section of the long-established Boxted Lodgers Football Club are South Suffolk League Champions for the second year running. Having won Division 3 last season without losing a single game and so gaining promotion to Division 2, they have done it again, winning Division 2 by five points. The boys are justifiably proud of their growing collection of silverware and relish the prospect of playing in Division 1 next season. The team also plays on Sundays in the highy competitive A League of the Colchester & District Youth League. Sponsored by local businesses Colchester Motorglass and LW Fitness, the Club has huge ambition and grand plans for the future. It is always on the look-out for new players: if you wish to be part of this vibrant and energetic title-winning club and be trained by FA-qualified coaches you can join them at training on a Wednesday evening at Boxted Playing Field, Cage Lane. Contact managers Ewan MacGregor or Mattia Pugh([email protected]) or ([email protected]).

His wide-ranging reminiscences encompassed the very extensive use of horses as the principal motive power up to WW2 and beyond: as late as 1968 the Saxmundham refuse cart was horse-drawn. Indeed, pack-horses are still retained in some countries. His talk, supported by a display of photographs, elicited many questions from his audience, as well as a number of individual recollections.

LANGHAM COMMUNITY COUNCIL

The Annual General Meeting of the Council will be held at the Langham Community Centre on Thursday 19 May at 7.30 pm. At the Annual Meeting the election of Officers and Community Council representatives will take place. There will also be an update on the progress of the plans for refurbishing the Centre. All Langham residents are cordially invited to attend and to share their views.

BOXTED HISTORY GROUP Roger Clark, farrier, farmer and leading authority on heavy horses (particularly Suffolk Punches) spoke entertainingly of his “Customers and Other Animals” at the History Group’s March meeting. His father was a horse doctor at Ipswich in the 1920s and he could not recall a time when he was not entirely surrounded by horses, having his own pony when three years old.

LANGHAM WI The room was packed at the April WI meeting, when Linda Scoles recounted lively and amusing stories of the pickles arising from language differences in which she found herself when moving from the USA to tackle village life in Suffolk and to run a business. Members have been busy with artwork and catering preparations for the Group meeting, when over a hundred guests are expected; acts from the Mercury Theatre and from Sheffield are booked.

THE EVERGREENS In March the Evergreens enjoyed a most colourful and informative talk by Roger Hance on garden birds. At the Easter meeting, the Rector had a very difficult task to judge the hot cross buns and Easter baskets. The 5 May meeting has had to be cancelled because the Boxted Village Hall has been booked as a polling station for the Borough Council elections. On 25 May there will be an outing by coach to Woodbridge, calling at Notcutts on returning. Non-members are very welcome, at a charge of £15. If you would like to join the party, please contact Linda Tralau on 272710. More outings are also planned: to Wroxham Broad on 6 July and to Bury Market on 7 September. Linda Tralau has all the details.

BOXTED VILLAGE HALL: BOOKINGS

BAGS OR BINS: RECYCLING & WASTE SERVICES CONSULTATION

Colchester Borough Council is seeking the opinions of residents on how best to reduce waste and increase recycling. An important issue is the question of whether collections should be by bags, as at present, or by “wheelie” bins, as often suggested. To make your views known, complete the online survey at

www.colchester.gov.uk/recyclingsurvey by 3 June. The survey is comparatively easy to complete.

Lisa Pugh has moved from Boxted and her place as Bookings Officer for Boxted Village Hall has been taken by Mandy Sadler, whose phone number is
