Precious Memories
M. T. was born the oldest of two children on September 15, 1923 to
Monroe and Lola Frankie Muckelroy Gilliam in Mt. Pleasant,
Texas. He departed this life on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at The
Willows in Kilgore, Texas.
In 1938, he united with and was baptized at Kilgore Baptist Church
under the leadership of Rev. Herbert Parker and faithfully served
until his demise.
He attended public schools in Mt. Pleasant, TX and upon relocation
to Kilgore became a member of the 1942 Kilgore Colored High
School class where he was a member of the band. He later attended
Langston University where he received a degree in Industrial Arts
specializing in tailoring.
His degree was well earned as he was known for his sense of style
which was reflected in his dapper dressing; as he was always
impeccably dressed.
In 1943, he entered the United States Navy and was honorably dis-
charged as a Steward’s Mate First Class in 1945. After 30 years of
employment he retired from Petrolite Corporation.
On September 14, 1953, he married his wife of 53 years, the late
Annie Lee Jackson and to this union five children were born.
His parents, wife, sons, Michael and M. T. Gilliam, Jr. all preceded
him in death.
Those that remain to cherish his memory are his daughter, Debra
Brown and her husband, Rickey of Henderson, TX; two sons,
Danny Gilliam and Darryl Gilliam both of Kilgore, TX; one sister,
Leola Cantly and her husband, Nathaniel of Amarillo, TX: three
grandchildren, Misty Gilliam of Henderson, TX; Keith Gilliam and
Millicent Gilliam both of Kilgore, TX; seven great grandchildren,
Nadia Gilliam, Anela Hames, Ma’Lazah Davis, Darryl Gilliam, III,
Azariah Gillliam, Aziyah Gilliam and Ma’Kelia Davis; and a host of
other relatives.
