War”: Lessons from the Civil War’s Junior Officers Corps What new things can we learn about the American Civil War? The lives, experiences and the all-too-often deaths of the young leaders who commanded soldiers in battle have been curiously overlooked by historians of that conflict. Will Woolfitt Assistant Professor of English, Lee University

Imagining the Past, Researching the Story Creative writers turn to historical research, documents, and artifacts for several reasons: to gain inspirations and wisdom, to imagine and empathize with the lives of other people of other times and places, to bring light stories forgotten or silenced by the dominant narrative. As writers, working with historical materials presents relevant detail, setting, truthfulness, and representation. In this seminar, we will discuss some of the choices that writers make when writing from historical sources, we’ll read historical fiction and documentary lyrics and we’ll try our hand at writing in response to artifacts and documents from the archives.
