SPECTRUMA message from Graeme HuntWelcome to the December edition of Spectrum.

In this final edition for 2016, we focus on the great people we have in our company.

A highlight for me was attending Broadspectrum’s Company Awards night held in November. I shared many laughs with our amazing people and it was a great opportunity for employees to come together and recognise many outstanding achievements.

The long service feature in this edition is a true testament to the value our people add to the Company, and their ongoing commitment and dedication to our success.

It has certainly been a busy year full of change. Since becoming part of the Ferrovial family, we have strengthened our business model and we have commenced the process to create the new Centre of Excellence for Resources, which we will launch in the new year.

As we reflect on another successful year, I want to reiterate my passion for your safety. Many of us will be travelling by road over the holiday period. Please be alert and drive safely.

I trust you’ll enjoy yet another edition of Spectrum that exemplifies our values and commitment to safety, inclusion, the environment and the community through the many good news stories from around the business.

Finally, I would like to thank each of you for your hard work over the past year and I look forward to your safe return to work in 2017.

Pledging for Road SafetyRoad related accidents pose one of the greatest safety risks to our employees and contractors.

To encourage safe driving behaviour, Broadspectrum asked employees and contractors company-wide to sign a Road Safety Pledge in November – making a promise to themselves, their family and friends to consciously drive safely and obey road rules.

With online submissions, office and contract meetings, the enthusiasm from employees across multiple geographies was overwhelming as teams engaged in constructive discussions about making positive choices and decision-making when driving.

The campaign reinforced to our employees that they have a responsibility to drive safely for their own safety and for the safety of those people with whom they share the road.

This was well demonstrated recently by a transport driver on Manus Island. The driver acknowledged that he was starting to feel tired and made the decision to pull over and pass the driving over to another employee. A commendable example of how to make safe road choices.

THE WINNERS’ CIRCLEIt is evident from the following list that the whole business has made an extra effort to close the year with key wins across our diverse industries, entering new markets, and strengthening our position as leaders in delivering services that are essential to clients.

Congratulations to everyone who has contributed to these important achievements and for closing 2016 successfully.

Energy

Broadspectrum’s joint venture with Cegelec, TRACE, has been awarded a six-year contract by INPEX for maintenance services at its Ichthys onshore Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant near Darwin. The contract has two extension options of two years each. From early 2017, TRACE will deliver maintenance, shutdowns and brownfield services to the onshore LNG processing facility. This facility is planned to produce 8.9 million tonnes of LNG and 1.6 million tonnes of LPG per annum, and 100,000 barrels of condensate per day at its peak.

Easternwell has recently signed a contract extension with BHP Billiton Iron Ore for four years, valued at $44 million for mineral drilling works. This adds to other leveraged works with QGC for well maintenance, valued at $5 million.

We also have the new contract with Caltex Australia for the structural, mechanical and piping construction of the Newport Terminal’s expansion, for $1.5 million until the end of 2017.

Our relationship with the National Broadband Network (nbn) has been strengthened

with the renewal of our facilities maintenance contract, valued at $30 million, and the award

of a new four-year construction services contract, valued at $60

million in the first year.

Our New Zealand telecommunications business

was also awarded a $19 million contract extension with Chorus

until 2019 and a new $1.4 million contract with Huawei

Technologies.

Transpower New Zealand has awarded various extensions for more than $28 million for grid maintenance services, upgrades and installations, while our client Orion NZ Limited has awarded several new contracts totalling $4.2 million for network maintenance.

Similarly, our relationship with client Mighty River Power has strengthened through the award of various repair, installation and upgrade contracts, valued at $1.1 million. We have also added to our electrical services work with Meridian Energy and Mercury Energy.

Our Court Security and Custodial Services contract with the Western Australia Department of Corrective Services is proof of our ability to enter new markets. This is a $258 million five-year contract with two five-year extension options. It includes prison financing, construction and operations, prisoner rehabilitation, training, and asset and facilities management. It also gives us the opportunity to add value through the Company's welfare-led approach to the delivery of essential services.

We have also expanded our work with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to deliver welfare services, and we are now providing facilities maintenance services to the Arborfield Group’s Special Housing Area in New Zealand for a contract value of $8.6 million.

Telecommunications

ResourcesTransport and Water

Broadspectrum signs four-year nbn agreement - Sandra Dodds and Stuart Nevison signing the nbn contract.

The great job done by our New Zealand roads maintenance team has been rewarded with a contract extension of $1 million for rehabilitation of roads in the Kaipara district, adding to other new transport contracts with clients including Auckland Airport, Auckland Transport and the Cook Islands.

The great job done with the Kaipara District has also led to new work for water facilities operations and maintenance, valued at $6.8 million, in addition to a new contract with Watercare Services.

As part of the Ferrovial group, we share in the success of the following new contracts:

• Through its subsidiary Ferrovial Agroman, and in joint venture with Morgan Sindall and BAM Nutall as FUSION, Ferrovial has been selected by HS2 Ltd to complete £300 million worth of works on the high speed railway between London and Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Ferrovial’s subsidiary, Amey, will also support the delivery of works.

• Ferrovial, through a consortium headed by Cintra, is the Preferred Proposer for the contract to design, build, finance, operate and maintain a 35-kilometre concession on Interstate 66 in Virginia, United States.

Thank you and farewell to Protection Technician, Derrick Hickton from New Zealand, who recently went into retirement after a rewarding 55 years and four months with Broadspectrum. Derrick started with the company in 1961 as a Hydro Electric Apprentice, before becoming an Electrical Fitter in 1965 and a Technical Officer in 1983.

New Zealand National Manager Station Technical Operations, Mark O’Connor had only positive comments about Derrick: “A loyal, intelligent employee who benefited our industry significantly. I’ve known Derrick for about 25 years, he was always personable and ready to give wise counsel. Technically astute with a dry humour, and a great team member.”

At Broadspectrum, achievement and success do not happen by accident – it requires Integrity, Collaboration, Challenge and Ingenuity. Following our core values requires a special kind of dedication, shown by all our employees, to which we owe thanks for our organisation’s success.

Among us there are those who have exemplified this dedication for decades.

We want to especially recognise and congratulate the following employees on reaching their milestones of long service, and sharing their knowledge and experience with the team throughout their journey with the company.

Creating a culture to close the Gap – the nbn experience

Broadspectrum is committed to reducing the imbalance

between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in

Australia – that is, we are committed to reconciliation.

For us, that means having a business that is socially

inclusive and recognises the customary needs of local

Indigenous people and their communities.

Like all nbn delivery partners, Broadspectrum has outlined its strategy to support nbn’s goal of making a positive

contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities. We have done so based on our own experiences to date working in the broader service industry across Australia and it is these experiences

that guide our engagement works on nbn.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) underpins our commitment to reconciliation. It outlines how we will play our part in strengthening trust and relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people using the three pillars of respect, relationships and opportunity.

Peter Ryan, nbn’s Chief Network Engineering Officer, recently launched nbn’s second Reconciliation Action Plan which will “create the right operating environment to ensure the opportunity for Australia’s First Nations peoples to participate equally in the roll-out of

the nbn and to access the nbn and bridge the digital divide.”

Like all nbn delivery partners, Broadspectrum has outlined its strategy to support nbn’s vision for Reconciliation, which is “to see the work we do enhance two-way meaningful engagement, understanding and connection between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and broader Australian society and communities”.

Our nbn team is committed to delivering on the actions made in our RAP, and seeking out Indigenous business partners.

ABOVE: Technical specialists wire the new nbn network to the existing copper network to ensure minimal service disruptions during the build.

RESPECT

Respect is about strengthening our employee’s understanding of Indigenous heritage and culture, and respect Indigenous values and beliefs. We participate in NAIDOC and Reconciliation Week activities, and invite traditional elders to our sites when we commence works in a new area to discuss their connection to country and perform welcome ceremonies.

On nbn, every Broadspectrum staff team member participates in cultural awareness training. The training assists employees to understand the historical context behind the social challenges, family structures and cultural nuances that can sometimes hinder Indigenous workforce participation. It can also be a powerful personal experience that can change the perception of Australia’s Indigenous history and people, and help to develop a greater understanding of what reconciliation really means for Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike.

RELATIONSHIPS

When Broadspectrum commences nbn work in a new region, it establishes contact with the Registered Aboriginal Party for the region and invites them to perform on-country training and welcome ceremonies at the first Toolbox Talk. It is an acknowledgment of the traditional owners of the land we work on and usually marks the start of a relationship building process that explores an Indigenous community’s capacity to participate in the nbn project.

Communication and Stakeholder Manager, Victoria and NSW, Jay Gleeson said: “In South West Victoria, we have established relationships with Worngundidj Enterprises, Eastern Marr Aboriginal Corporation and the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation. Through these connections we have recruited one new employee for the Warrnambool region and are currently developing a Certificate III Telecommunications Traineeship program to run in the region. We expect to have the first trainees starting on the project early in the new financial year.”

OPPORTUNITY

Being able to identify opportunities that match an Indigenous community’s capacity is a key challenge in bringing Indigenous employees and contractors onto nbn.

“With a lack of ready-to-go contractors in Victoria and NSW we are looking more broadly at how to bring businesses onto the contract. We have identified Indigenous owned businesses that can provide non-construction support to our organisation, such as waste management, cleaning, stationery and printing services and we are currently working to see if they are a good fit for the project. We are also in discussions on developing recruitment pathways from Indigenous Vocational Educational Training Centres (VETC) through to subcontractors working on nbn contracts,” said Jay.

There is not a one-size-fits-all solution to generating Indigenous opportunities with Broadspectrum on nbn. We will continue to build our network of Indigenous business and community contacts across Victoria and NSW to discover where opportunities for partnerships may lie.

Quick Facts

• 65 projects completed (comprising: 36 in New South Wales, and 29 in Victoria)*

• 121 kilometres of conduit installed (comprising: 85 kilometres in New South Wales, and 36 kilometres in Victoria)

• 1,432 kilometres of cable hauled (comprising: 832 kilometres in New South Wales, and 600 kilometres in Victoria)

• 1,363 cabinets installed (comprising: 748 in New South Wales, and 615 in Victoria)

*Note: in the context of nbn, a project constitutes a

geographic cluster of approximately 2,500 premises,

fed by approximately 15 cabinets and known as a

‘SAM’ (Serving Area Module)

More than 1,500 kilometres of fibre optic cable has been hauled through underground conduit networks to build the nbn.

Project teams are spread out across eight locations in Victoria and New South Wales.

Human Rights in BusinessSaturday, 10 December 2016, marks

the 68th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations’ (UN) Universal

Declaration of Human Rights. The world has changed significantly since 1948; however, the declaration still remains relevant today and forms the basis of any discussion on human rights.

In 2014 Broadspectrum started to undertake the development of the Company’s Human Rights Statement.

This statement has since been included in our Code of Business Conduct and is a public declaration of our Company’s commitment to upholding and respecting human rights.

Although our Human Rights Statement is relatively new, the principles and values it promotes have been practiced by our Company since we commenced operations. So what are these ‘human rights’ and why is it important that we respect and uphold these in our business practices?

“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close

to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Unless these rights have

meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home,

we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”

– Eleanor Roosevelt

Page 9: Celebrating our employees - Broadspectrum · Trevor Wayne Percival New Zealand Barry Hollis ... Raymond Dawson Raymund Jimenez ... Celebrating our employees 2016

What are human rights?Put simply, human rights are those rights which belong to every person. The UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights contains 30 articles identifying these rights or universally expected standards of treatment.

Human rights recognise the inherent value of each person, regardless of background, where we live, what we look like, what we think or what we believe.

They are based on principles of dignity, equality and mutual respect, which are shared across cultures, religions and philosophies. They are about being treated fairly, treating others fairly and having the ability to make genuine choices in our daily lives.

Respect for human rights is the cornerstone of strong communities in which everyone can make a contribution and feel included.

While governments have the primary duty to protect human rights, where possible, business should strive to protect these rights also.

Our Company’s operations can have an impact on a wide range of people, including employees, customers, suppliers, business partners and local communities. Therefore, most of the human rights listed in the UN declaration are relevant to our business. There are some human rights which we need to be more mindful of than others, particularly in the area of labour rights and supply-chain.

How do we respect and uphold human rights? Our Company has already incorporated the principles of human rights in our business practice. We do this through our:

• robust Health and Safety Management System and Mandatory Safety Rules

• commitment to community engagement and Indigenous participation

• accredited environmental management system and business improvement plan

• privacy policy and IT security systems that protect confidential information

• Business Partners due diligence and procurement processes that ensure oversight of our supply-chain and subcontractors

• Code of Business Conduct and Equality and Diversity in the Workplace Policy, and

• Whistleblower and Integrity Hotline through which all employees are given a confidential avenue to raise concerns.

OpportunitiesEvery contract where we deliver services to a client, is an opportunity for our Company to promote human rights. One of the ways we do this is through our Community Engagement and Indigenous Participation approaches.

In Nauru, Broadspectrum trained expert local pest controllers. While this work was carried out for our operations, it will now assist the local community for many years to come, helping to reduce the Island’s pest population, protecting food supplies and controlling the spread of diseases.

Indigenous peoples, rights to land and culture are one of the human rights identified by the United Nations. Our Reconciliation Action Plan promotes the rights of Indigenous people through building strong relationships and creating increased opportunities for employment and engagement. Broadspectrum had the opportunity to collaborate with Traditional Land Owners from the Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation in Western Australia, to assist with the management and protection of culturally significant sites.

What can I do?Everyone has an obligation to respect and uphold human rights, from our Board of Directors to each individual member of the Broadspectrum team.

When we are engaging a new business partner, it is our responsibility to make sure we know who we are doing business with. When we are on one of our sites, it is an individuals responsibility to make sure our colleagues are safe, and to raise concerns if we think they are not. We must be mindful of possible discrimination in our teams and workplaces, and work towards eliminating those behaviours.

If we see a possible human rights issue, we all have a responsibility to report it, either to the Whistleblower and Integrity Hotline or to the Compliance team:[email protected].

Training – get on-boardIn January, a new Code of Business Conduct training module will be uploaded to SuccessFactors. Code of Business Conduct training is mandatory and is an important part of ensuring we all understand our responsibilities to respect and uphold human rights. The module takes 20 minutes to complete and is not only a good opportunity to learn more about human rights and business, it also demonstrates that, as a Company, we are serious about our human rights commitments.

Celebrating our employees 2016The third annual Awards night (the first held under the Broadspectrum name) was a night for celebration, as 27 finalists from across the company, joined Board members and senior management to pay tribute to some of the great work that is done by our proud employees.

Page 11: Celebrating our employees - Broadspectrum · Trevor Wayne Percival New Zealand Barry Hollis ... Raymond Dawson Raymund Jimenez ... Celebrating our employees 2016

“The FBN Award recognises good management in our contracts of

safety, service, people and budget.”

Australia’s first ever winter Olympic gold medallist, Steven Bradbury, proved to be an entertaining and engaging Master of

Ceremonies for the night.

The nominations review committee had the extremely difficult task of reviewing more than 160 nominations and narrowing it down to three finalists in each category.

“Of all the nominations I reviewed, they were all worthy finalists and the decision and process was very hard,” said one of the review committee members.

There were nine categories with the Creating Inclusion Award presented for the first time. The other award categories were: the Colin Chadwick Apprentice and Trainee of the Year Award, the MD Values Awards with separate awards for Integrity, Collaboration, Challenge and Ingenuity, the Franco Belgiorno-Nettis (FBN) Award for teams displaying outstanding performance, the Chairman’s Safety Award, and finally the Tony Shepherd Contract Manager of the Year Award.

Our new Chairman, Paul McClintock AO, presented the first award, Colin Chadwick Apprentice and Trainee Award to Ashley Hemerik, Vehicle Mechanic, Defence, Queensland.

Our Managing Director and CEO, Graeme Hunt, took to the stage next to present the MD’s Values Awards.

The winners were:

• Integrity — Geoff Alsemgeest, UFF Field Manager, New Zealand

• Collaboration — Matt Moynihan, National Manager, Business Strategy, Sydney

• Challenge — Ben Hoyle, Business Manager, NSW Industrial, Sydney, and

• Ingenuity — Land Material Maintenance Contract for their Continuous Improvement Program Innovations.

Guido Belgiorno-Nettis attended the evening to present the final ever FBN Award named after his late father, Transfield Services’ founder Franco.

The FBN Award recognises an outstanding team that provides a healthy and safe workplace for everyone, delivers the best service possible, looks after our people and is financially successful.

Alliance Manager, Robert Plummer accepted the award on behalf of the Aroona Alliance in Western Australia.

Chairman Paul McClintock AO, returned to the stage to present the Chairman’s Safety Award in recognition of a person or team that showed outstanding workplace safety throughout the year.

This year, the Chairman’s Safety Award went to the Australia and New Zealand Plant and Equipment Group which was proudly accepted by Executive Manager, Strategic Fleet Management, Liz Phillips.

The final award for the night was the Tony Shepherd Contract Manager of the Year Award, named after the Company’s former Chairman. Craig Wann, Contract Manager Queensland Roads was this year’s recipient for his leadership which helped provide clear direction to the team while they strived to provide quality and sustainable maintenance on the Logan and Gateway Motorways. Unfortunately Tony was unable to attend the night, so Chief Executive Strategy, Operations and Improvement, Fidel Lopez presented the award on his behalf.

Overall, the night was a great success. Thank you to all those who attended and those who made the night run so smoothly.

— Former executive and Board member, and son of company’s founder, Franco Belgiorno-Nettis, after whom the FBN Award honours

SPECTRUM December 2016 | 11

Chief Development Officer, Ian Maxted, explained the importance of our new Creating Inclusion Award:

“It has always been so that our systems and processes and the way that we work is linked to our success. But, what has become more apparent is that our success is inextricably linked to the diversity and inclusion of our people. It is more important that everyone feels that their input is valued and that they are a valued part of our organisation. Tonight’s finalists are here because, while it’s not part of their job, they are making changes to ensure their contracts are inclusive.”

"I am extremely honoured to have received the Tony Shepherd Contract Manager of the Y ear award, however this is not just my award as my whole team on the ground has contributed to the outstanding results that the contract has been achieving.”

— Craig Wann

Broadspectrum’s Quarry contract in New Zealand recently provided in-kind expertise and donated materials to the Paihia community through local group Focus Paihia. They prepared a traffic management plan for the entrance to a mountain bike track and donated alternative waste materials from their quarry operations to construct the track. The bike track is an important tourism attraction for the region, and our support has provided significant savings for both Focus Paihia and the community.

Congratulations to our team for running the 14 km of the City2Surf marathon, from Hyde Park through to Bondi Beach. Great job!

Our teams from South Australia and Northern Territory brought Broadspectrum for the first time ever to the #katherinecareersexpo, organised by @ntgovernment to help job seekers engage in further education and employment. Our people were pleased to meet lots of students, who took up the majority of attendance, and give them advice on some of the very exciting opportunities that we have across all our industries in the area. They will also be at the #darwincareersexpo tonight.

Our subsidiary Easternwell has opened its community grants program, providing financial and social assistance in regions where they have key operations, such as the Pilbara, Surat Basin and Toowoomba. The program was established in 2011 and already more than 139 organisations, including the Chinchilla Scout Group, have been awarded almost a quarter million dollars. Our National Contact Centre (NCC) in Parramatta, Sydney, is the perfect example of how the

business can benefit from diversity and inclusion.

The NCC team includes employees from different countries of origins, people with disabilities, working parents, and it is working closely with our Indigenous Employment Parity Initiative (IEPI) team to secure Indigenous employees in its ranks.

NCC Manager, Petula Freese-Chadwick has worked tirelessly and passionately to create a more inclusive environment to ensure everyone in the contract feels respected, appreciated and empowered to play an integral role in this high-performing business.

This includes a working program that accommodates people with disabilities, shifts for parents around school drop-

off and pick-up times, and shifts to accommodate religious cultural events and holidays.

As a result, the NCC has a very motivated team; an attrition rate of less than five per cent – far below the industry norm – and has achieved seven years Lost Time Injury-free.

The inclusive culture also recently led to a 100 per cent approval rating from NSW Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) tenants whom they assist by managing maintenance issues.

Attaining the high approval score is a challenging task considering the NCC handles more than 100,000 calls a month from more than 16 contracts in Australia and three in New Zealand. These include LAHC, the Department of Defence, Whole of Government – Schools, Driver Feedback, FM National (Amcor, Boral, CSR), University of Newcastle, NBN, NZ

Police, Meridien Energy, Chorus, Easternwell and QGC’s Journey Management Systems and the corporate receptions across Australia and New Zealand.

It is a 24 hours a day, 365 days a year contract that is professionally handled by more than 100 call centre professionals and support employees.

For her efforts, Petula received the Creating Inclusion Award at the Broadspectrum Awards night in November, but was quick to acknowledge her pride in the team’s achievement: “We receive up to 1,500 calls every day, and ensure that each

one of those calls is followed up until it is resolved. The people we support know that their call will always be answered, no matter what time of the day.”

High approval rates for NCC’s customer service

Our diverse and inclusive National Call Centre team has plenty of reasons to smile this year.

Fulfilling one of our commitments in our 2015-2018 Reconciliation Action Plan, Broadspectrum has

established the Indigenous Youth Advisory Council (IYAC) with young enthusiasts who work in different areas across the business.

Their objective is to inform Broadspectrum about what the career and personal needs of young Indigenous people are and how our organisation can assist with those needs. Eager to make a difference, their first IYAC meeting was held in the Brisbane office, where Queensland Regional Indigenous Steering Committee Chair, Tim Phelan provided an overview of the executive team’s commitment to Indigenous participation.

Broadspectrum’s Indigenous Development Manager, Llewellyn Williams, is thrilled with the initiative: “This is an example of Broadspectrum acknowledging and recognising the importance of supporting youth. An initiative like this allows us to have an open dialogue with our current young Indigenous employees who can provide an insight into their issues and expectations of corporate businesses. This allows Broadspectrum to develop improvement strategies to assist these young Indigenous people in reaching their full potential.”

The IYAC will meet twice a year with regular reports and updates provided to the Indigenous Advisory Board.

Broadspectrum’s NSW Schools contract has been sponsoring the Guringai Art Festival for the past

three years.

This year, Chair of Broadspectrum’s NSW Regional Indigenous Steering Committee attended with NSW Indigenous

Engagement Advisor, Steve Adams at Wheeler Heights Public School in Sydney.

Chair of Broadspectrum’s NSW Regional Indigenous Steering Committee, David Hukins, said, “The artwork produced by the students across a range of mediums from clay to bark is brilliant and showcases both their skills and the support they receive within the schools from staff and local elders. We are excited again this year to be invited to support reconciliation led by our youth and community".

A collective of 10 primary and three high schools participated in the three-day event in the Peninsula Community of Schools, on Guringai country, to raise awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the northern Sydney region.

To acknowledge our support, year 10 student Sophie Thomas, from Barrenjoey High School, presented the contract with an artwork of a green sea turtle.

Our New Zealand business works closely with the community to place cadets

and give opportunities for young people to gain on-the job experience and training, and has already placed over 75 apprentices in different areas.

For instance, our Whangerei District Council Road Maintenance Contract works closely with the ‘Having Fun’ organisation to upskill young people, providing first aid and traffic control training and work experience. One of the young participants has now

obtained permanent employment on the contract.

New Zealand Learning and Development Manager, Damian Treanor, commented: “This is a great way for the young person to familiarise themselves with what the job involves. Practical experience complements theoretical knowledge of the field, and it is vital that our business assists young people during their studies and offers them avenues to grow.”

Delivering career opportunities in New Zealand

Ten Rivers, as part of Broadspectrum, is committed to building strong relationships with

Indigenous communities and increasing opportunities for employment and engagement. Ten Rivers is proud to be part of Broadspectrum’s Elevate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2015-2018.

We have direct experience in working with and alongside government representatives and Traditional Owner (TO) groups to enhance Indigenous engagement (through training, employment, and procurement) and

ensure we manage Cultural Heritage collaboratively with the stakeholders in line with existing legislation.

To assist with Broadspectrum’s commitment to Indigenous participation and community engagement, Ten Rivers receives support from a dedicated Business Community Investment team and Indigenous Development Manager, Llewellyn Williams, who supports Broadspectrum’s RAP commitment and assist Ten Rivers’ to drive Indigenous engagement with local organisations and community groups.

As part of our Defence contract, Ten Rivers is collaborating with a TO group, Bradshaw and Timber Creek Contracting, at Timber Creek. Ten Rivers provided training to the TO group (funded by the National Land Council) and liaised on bushfire and weed management works. This was a successful collaboration between the Bradshaw and Timber Creek Contracting Company and Ten Rivers.

Ten Rivers has also engaged Tiwi Enterprises to assist with the Bathurst Island Weed Implementation and Burn Management Programs 2016. Tiwi Enterprises is undertaking these works at Point Fawcett Defence Radar Facility in collaboration with Ten Rivers.

Both these initiatives have created positive outcomes for Ten Rivers, TO Groups and local communities.

On 25 November 2016, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against

Women, Broadspectrum’s parent company, Ferrovial, confirmed it is carrying out several actions in support of its commitment to a society free from gender-based violence.

These actions are, in turn, supported by Broadspectrum.

They include upholding the principles of equal opportunities and equal treatment for men and women.

This work expands on Ferrovial’s signatory to the Ministry for Health, Social Services and Equality’s ‘Companies for a society free from violence against women’.

More than 3,000 of our employees across Europe proudly wore their

‘There is a way out’ badges provided by a government campaign to raise awareness and create a safe environment for women to reach out to their colleagues and ask for help.

Eliminating violence

Broadspectrum is committed to working with indigenous communities to deliver real and

lasting change for Indigenous people.

One of the ways we do this is to engage Indigenous suppliers and subcontractors when looking to carry out services on Defence sites.

The team at Simpson Barracks, Victoria, recently had a requirement to undertake a replacement lighting project so they engaged the services of Blinte, a local father and son team.

The project involved changing the lighting from fluorescent to LED at the Ranks Mess and at the Broadspectrum regional office.

The outcome spoke for itself with both facilities shining more naturally and brighter, not to mention a more energy efficient solution.

Estate Maintenance and Operational Services Manager (EMOS), Sally Fontana, who has worked in the regional office for a number of years, noticed a dramatic change. “I didn’t know the walls were white, I thought they were yellow!” Sally said.

Richard from Blinte said working with Broadspectrum has allowed them to take further steps to support the growth of Indigenous employment.

“We aim to increase employment, training and supplier development opportunities for Indigenous people across Australia,” Richard said.

“Broadspectrum is the first company we have worked with and their employees at Simpsons Barracks and Mornington Shire have been sensational. They get it! They understand the importance of indigenous engagement.”

Blinte has created eight job opportunities for six Aboriginal people and two non-Aboriginal people to deliver projects for Broadspectrum.

The Hazardous and Explosive Area (HEA) Engineering Team under Fiona Hall (based at

Edinburgh, Australia) has developed a training presentation on this highly specialised engineering topic for the Defence Base Services contract in Australia.

The training covers an introduction on flammable gases, vapours and dusts, as well as explosive ordnance.

It explains stakeholder responsibilities for supervisors working on Defence bases, their technicians, schedulers etc, as well as the client’s responsibilities.

“The idea is to make this training available to all Defence Base Services contract employees on SuccessFactors, with field workers automatically assigned to the training and reminded about the biannual refresher,” said Fiona.

Client feedback on this safety initiative has been very positive, praising the proactive approach. The HEA Team has been asked to contribute to a similar training module for Defence.

If you would like to learn more about this training, or Hazardous and Explosive Areas in general, please contact Fiona at: [email protected].

In October, the EastLink team in Melbourne participated in a pilot program to film a Job Dictionary

to assist with injury management.

Overseen by Broadspectrum’s Occupational Health Specialist, Catherine Taylor, a film crew captured tasks performed by the operations and maintenance crews.

The purpose of the filming was to document the physical demands and environmental exposures of specific tasks, which may put employees at risk of injury.

The end result will be a library of professional and informative Job Dictionaries pertaining to the roles at EastLink to assist with injury management.

Tasks filmed included maintenance of toll gantries, roadside cabinets, street lighting, CCTV cameras, concrete repairs, graffiti removal, cleaning of drains, litter collection, sign inspection, mowing, brush cutting, chipping, spraying, weeding, setting up traffic management, incident response duties and control room operations.

All work crews got their chance to model safe behaviour for the video.

The filming was very successful and all participants were enthusiastic and very patient with repeating tasks for the video crew to capture all angles.

We look forward to viewing the final product and using the video to assist with injury management.

Our Defence team at Pearce Air Base donated much needed sustenance to Defence

employees participating in the RED25 challenge.

Through this annual event, The Australian Red Cross Blood Service challenges navy, army, air force and defence civilians to donate blood and save lives.

Broadspectrum donated a barbeque lunch to the team to ensure that those who donated were well fed.

Our Food and Beverage Coordinator at Pearce Air Base, Robert Morley, said: “This event was a success and we are very happy to donate the barbeque lunch for our Defence teammates.”

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service’s Community Relations Officer, Tiffany Gourlay, said of the service: “It’s a life-saving social responsibility program that everyone can be proud to be part of. Three lives are saved with every donation.”

Our New Zealand Head Office team also recently rolled up their sleeves and donated blood to the NZ Blood Donation Service, contributing to the demand from local hospitals.

Talent Acquisition Specialist, Lynn Wethey, took the opportunity to donate again after ten years. She commented: “It made me feel good giving something that may help others and I will not be waiting another 10 years to give blood again.”

APP celebrates 20-year Redkite milestone

October represented the culmination of some serious effort by APP employees

around the country when the final event for the national Redkite Corporate Quiz took place in the grand ballroom of Sydney’s The Westin Hotel.

The quiz attracted more than 500 people, with long-time supporter and host Adam Spencer joining other celebrities to donate their time on the night to raise funds for families facing childhood and youth cancer.

This year was special for two reasons: a record $1,166,500 was raised collectively across all four quiz events and the Sydney quiz marked the 20-year anniversary for APP as the National Organising Sponsor.

The Melbourne and Sydney quiz events were particularly successful, thanks to the generosity of the attendees who smashed the targets by $35,000 in Melbourne and a whopping $100,000 in Sydney.

We would like to thank all the companies and businesses, including some of our clients, who have supported the Quiz along the 20-year journey by either taking a table or donating an auction prize.

Also, thank you to all the APP employees who assisted in the quiz production or volunteered on the night in Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle.

E-waste is the collection of old monitors, desktop computers, laptops, phones and all associated

devices that are no longer useful. Every year, as technology improves and becomes faster, the lifecycle of these devices shortens, and the pile of unused electronics expands. As a result, business offices are the first generators of e-waste in the world.

As a response to e-waste generation, we have partnered with the National E-Waste Alliance (NEWA) to manage our e-waste on a national scale. NEWA is a unified representative entity of not-for-profit, community-based, e-waste recycling organisations that create employment opportunities for local

people with disabilities or disadvantages. Last financial year 2016, 98 per cent of e-waste collected by NEWA, representing approximately 1.2 million kilograms, was diverted from landfill.

Our first e-waste pick-up under this partnership was from the Melbourne corporate office and was taken to Ozanam Enterprises, part of St Vincent De Paul Society, in Mornington for disassembly. The service contributed to 905 kilograms of e-waste being recycled, diverting 99 per cent from landfill, and has established our relationship with a disability enterprise that provides much-needed employment for the local community.

Do your part to recycle e-waste in your office and contact our Sustainability and Environment department today.

A room with a view

Our joint venture team at Harbour City Ferries (HCF) worked with IKEA as part of a promotion with the prize being a night

sleeping on a ferry on Sydney Harbour.

Max Watson and girlfriend Neece Carrington, rose to the stunning sight of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, having spent the night cruising around the city’s waterways and taking in the sites from the comfort of their temporary home on the water after Max’s rap captivated the judges to win the competition.

With the help of IKEA’s interior design team, the room had been built with a number of personal touches that included framed pictures of the couple.

Chief Executive Officer, HCF, Steffen Faurby said: “Thank you to Commercial Development Manager, Paul Zagami as the main contact for the promotion

and to the numerous employees throughout HCF from operations, Balmain Shipyard, SHEQ, communication and crew, who – if you ask them all – just did their job.”

This was the largest positive publicity event for HCF with coverage via Channel 9, SkyNews, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Daily Telegraph, syndication through all major News Limited publications and on social media.

Pop-Up Tradie-Shops making a difference for housing tenants

Broadspectrum’s ‘Pop-Up Tradie-Shops’ for our NSW Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) contract in the Southern Sydney

region, are making all the difference in building great relationships with the community.

Waterloo and Redfern, where several Pop-Up Tradie-Shops have been hosted, had historical maintenance problems, and further suffer continuing social stigma. Our ‘Pop-Up Tradie-Shops’ enabled us to get closer to the community, putting friendly and helpful faces to the Company’s name, and letting tenants know that their requests and enquiries are heard and actioned.

Our internal trade team of electricians, plumbers, carpenters, estimators and managers solve as many maintenance requests as they can on the spot and the rest in the following days. All eight ‘Pop-Up

Tradie-Shops’ have been a huge success, with more than 210 tenants engaged, more than 230 properties and common areas attended and more than 325 work orders completed by our carpentry, electrical, plumbing and other trades.

A special ‘Mega Pop-Up Tradie-Shop’ was organised recently at Waterloo Green, with approximately 300 attendees coming for a chat with Broadspectrum and team members from LAHC and Department of Family and Community Services (FACS), all sharing in a BBQ lunch in the sun. On the day, our team engaged 80 tenants, raised 122 work orders across 64 locations and completed 26 jobs on the spot. Community Service Officers and interpreters from FACS made the communication easier so the tenants’ issues could be understood and promptly solved. Our team of tradies resolved many maintenance requests

on the spot.

Our Defence team partnered with the client and the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) to successfully organise a ‘Great

Book Swap’ at Leeuwin Barracks in Western Australia, Simpson Barracks and RAAF Laverton Base in Victoria.

The team donated more than 200 books and $600 to the ILF, which will provide literacy resources to Indigenous children and their families in remote areas all over Australia.

Children’s books were also donated to Yappera Children’s Services and other community organisations.

The event was so successful that the Leeuwin Barracks team is setting up an ongoing book swap in exchange for a gold coin donation, with proceeds to be donated to the ILF.

Great book swap

Knowing is half the battle, and the Defence teams are helping to win the fight for literacy

in remote Australia.

Protecting heritage site

Max Watson and girlfriend Neece Carrington spent a night on a ferry after winning an IKEA competition.

The archaeological human remains found at a work site in Oceanbeach Road captured the attention of local media.

Congratulations to the Broadspectrum team in New Zealand who successfully completed the underground installation of Ultrafast Fibre (UFF)

throughout the Mt Maunganui North area ahead of time and under budget as part of New Zealand’s nationwide rollout.

The scope of work was to design and build layer one of the UFF network for the central north island including Waikato, Tauranga, New Plymouth and Whanganui.

What makes this such a great achievement is that the Mt Maunganui North area is rich in history with many archaeological sites discovered over the years.

It was important for us to comply and respect any findings. We commissioned an archaeological assessment of the project area and applied to Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, (HNZPT) for an archaeological authority under section 14 of the Historic Places Act 1993 to modify the sites and any other archaeological features encountered during works.

At its peak, a team of 100 Broadspectrum employees worked closely with up to 200 subcontractors from 15

different companies to complete the project six months ahead of schedule.

Key achievements and highlights made by the team over the contract includes:

• reduced the Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate from 16 to two over the life of the contract

• connected 165,000 premises to the UFF during the project

• drilled 2.5 million metres

• excavated 55,000 holes

• deployed 250 x 144 fibre cables and 1,250 fibre distribution hubs

• spliced 200,000 fibres

• never fell behind the program schedule

• successfully engaged and collaborated with local Iwi tribes and Hapu families through open communication and involvement from the beginning of the contract, and

• received a commendation from Heritage New Zealand for exceeding expectations.

Contract Manager, Matt Scott said: “I am extremely proud of the team who worked so hard over the life of the contract. Without everyone’s dedication and attention to detail we wouldn’t be able to have such a great relationship with the client.”

T he quick thinking and brave actions of Nauru Site Settlement Supervisor, Rewi Tolich, saved

the life of a woman from a fire in Nauru earlier this year. His courage was commended at a special presentation with Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Graeme Hunt and members of the executive team.

Rewi was undertaking routine inspections when he noticed a building on fire. On approaching the building he was informed it was possible that people were inside. After quickly assessing the situation he entered the building through a bedroom window, finding a woman asleep. Rewi was able to safely extract the woman from the burning building, before returning and making sure there were no other occupants.

Rewi explains: “When I arrived at the building someone said there was a

child inside. As soon as they said that, I immediately thought of my nieces and what I would do to save them. I don’t feel like a hero, I just wanted to get whoever was in the building out safely.”

Rewi demonstrated exceptional bravery in the face of immense personal risk and was able to remain clear-headed to ensure his own safety while making certain the building was clear. Throughout the search, Rewi returned a number times to the window for fresh air or to soak himself with water. He conducted his search from the ‘low’ position and instructed someone outside the building to watch his movements while he was searching inside. These controls helped to ensure that Rewi remained safe.

On presenting Rewi with his award, Graeme Hunt said: “I am really proud to be presenting this ‘Commendation

for Bravery’ award to Rewi. When he entered the building he was going above and beyond what was expected of him and it shows the amount of care that our people take on our contracts.”

“His actions embody the values of our company, especially integrity, in thinking of others before himself, and this makes me proud to be part of Broadspectrum.”

Congratulations to Rewi on receiving this well-deserved recognition.Broadspectrum leaders rallied

in cooperation with OzHarvest to donate their time and effort

to cook for people in need living in Darlinghurst, in Sydney.

This initiative was part of the BEST Leaders corporate training program.

As part of the program, the ‘GM Best Leaders Cause’ aims to create bonding work relationships among the participants, demonstrating that engaging teammates emotionally while sharing a common purpose helps to create a high performing team and increased job satisfaction.

Before engaging in their cooking tasks, the team was made familiar with some eye-opening facts. For example, Australia produces enough food to feed approximately 60 million people, yet two million still rely on food relief every year. Also, Australians waste four million tonnes of food per annum, which ends up in landfill. To put it in perspective, this is equivalent to each family throwing away one out of every five shopping bags, or $1,036 worth of groceries each year.

After induction, the team of managers gathered recovered ingredients from different companies, restaurants and supermarkets, prepped and cooked the ingredients under the supervision of a chef and got the meals ready for distribution to the homeless the next day, raising money in the process. Some of the dishes included lasagnes, shepherd’s pies and desserts.

Congratulations to our BEST Leaders for helping a very worthy cause.

Feeding people in need

The power of a great reputation and established networks is clearly demonstrated in our burgeoning

roads business in Northland, New Zealand.

Our Whangarei construction team is halfway through its six-year $15 million Totara Parklands subdivision. With more than 400 sites and based on our performance and great client relationship, we’ve successfully negotiated the additional five contract stages.

To date, the greenfields project has involved shifting 100,000 cubic metres of earth, and installing thousands of metres of water, sewage and stormwater systems, retaining walls, ducting, ponds, footpaths, roading and landscaping. Apart from air conditioning sealing, all works have been done in-house.

Whangarei Branch Manager, Fred Petersen said: “This project is now a strategic selling point for us – demonstrating the value of ownership and quality control achieved through doing it all in-house.”

Local knowledge also mitigated risk and added value when the client’s designer was unfamiliar with Northland Regional Council (NRC) requirements. Project Manager, Dayle Widdup, stepped in to assist by adjusting pipe size and type, and recommend more cost-effective solutions including an EcoGrid retaining wall system, and keeping land fill on site for a recreational space. The NRC is now touring local contractors through the development to illustrate best practice.

Recently picking up more earthmoving machinery means the team will be able to continue to grow their capability to operate at scale.

On 1 July, four of our major service lines (Estate Upkeep, Land Management, Pest and

Vermin and Transport) from within the Defence Base Services contract went live with their High Volume Services Solution.

The solution reduces employees’ administrative workload, and the upgraded mobility for dispatching work offers greater flexibility in the field for both internal and external resources. The automated scheduling and dispatching of work to our internal

teams and subcontractors will increase over time as we further embed the solution into our business processes.

Executive General Manager, Estate Services, David Reynolds said: “This is a major step forward in our ability to streamline service delivery for our client and provides the contract with increased visibility to manage performance and meet our contract targets.”

“We can track progress through the entire work cycle and be alerted to

events that require rapid response to improve performance efficiency,” said David.

This significant project has been achieved thanks to the major commitment from a wide range of dedicated people. In particular, our Project Management team, led by Craig Muldoon, who dedicated untold hours working with the project to deliver a fit-for-purpose solution. This was also supported by our wider leadership team who were heavily involved from the start to ensure the fit of the High

Volume Services Solution to their respective businesses.

“This project is a great demonstration of how the business and the teams from Project Management Office, Major Programs, Global Business Services and the wider business can work together. I would like to recognise the leadership shown by the Major Programs Team in ensuring that all parties were kept on track to deliver an integrated solution”, said David.

Light City Buses recently hosted delegates from Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Victoria to showcase

our operations and how we move large crowds of people in a safe and efficient manner.

With the 2018 Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast fast approaching, this was a great opportunity for the delegates to gain valuable crowd management tips.

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) and Adelaide Metro’s contractor Southlink hosted a lunch for all the delegates, followed by a trip down the O-Bahn.

St Agnes Depot Supervisor Shaun Payne drove the bus and took the delegates to the DPTI operated Traffic Management Centre (TMC) in Norwood for a tour of that facility.

The TMC observes and controls all traffic and traffic lights for Adelaide’s metropolitan area.

That night, the delegates attended an Australian Rules match at Adelaide Oval and observed the operation of the MAC Football Express services, operated by Light City Buses and other providers on each game.

“The buses can move between 7,000 and 9,000 football fans, and have them boarded and on their way home within 30-40 minutes of the final siren. This was of great interest to our visitors, as public transport will be used to move fans during the Commonwealth Games,” said Special Events Coordinator, Malcolm Figg.

In June, Senior Planner, Matt Williams drove a bus with 16 Chinese Mayors visiting Adelaide along the O-Bahn, and they were also impressed.

About the O-Bahn

The O-Bahn, Adelaide’s most frequented route, is a guided busway specially built on 12-kilometre long tracks – the world’s longest guided busway until 7 August 2011 –, combining elements of both bus and rail systems. At a maximum permitted speed of 100 km/h, it is the world’s fastest, and carries around nine million passengers a year.

Introduced in 1986 it was the first rapid bus transit system in Australia and among the first to operate in the world.

COLLABORATIONMoving nine million people

Recently, Technical Manager, Operations and Maintenance, Business Improvement, Jim

Mahood, visited Spain to attend Ferrovial’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Energy and Facility Management’s first energy efficiency forum.

Held at the Summa Universitas Ferrovial in El Escorial, Spain (60 kilometres out of Madrid) the event received more than 50 people from Ferrovial Services Spain and Portugal,

Amey UK, fbserwis, Poland and Broadspectrum Chile and Australia.

The aim of the forum was to educate and discuss the principles of energy efficiency and the Ferrovial Services model in developing markets for energy efficiency and delivering contracts.

Jim said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to tap into the thinking of the greater Ferrovial community and interact with operational, technical and financial teams already delivering these kind of contracts.”

Energy efficiency will be a growing market particularly with Australian government clients as they set targets to be carbon neutral, for example, ACT government by 2020, NSW 2050. Broadspectrum will be well advanced to help deliver these targets using the models currently being used by Ferrovial Services and Amey in Europe.

Ferrovial Services has successfully delivered these programs in urban street lighting systems, industrial plants, schools, hospitals, defense establishments and prisons.

“These are the sort of areas we operate in throughout Australia and New Zealand and opens up a whole new way of thinking in developing new business opportunities with current and new clients”, said Jim.

In a great display of collaboration with our client BlueScope Steel, the Broadspectrum team working at the

No. 5 Blast Furnace in Port Kembla stepped up to provide valuable help in the execution of a $2.5 million shutdown with tremendous success.

The shutdown had taken six months to plan and, on the day of its execution, three out of five BlueScope coordinators were suddenly unavailable, which put pressure on the rest of the team to carry out the operation.

The Broadspectrum team offered assistance immediately to act despite the absences. As a core part of the No. 5 Blast Furnace team, they knew all the required procedures and were confident that they could catch up on the leadership aspect of the shutdown.

Our coordinators encountered challenges and solved them on the go throughout the operation.

Some of the challenges included interactions with other contractors without having a prior relationship. They engaged quickly to understand the contractors, and used their knowledge to recognise other teams’ safety requirements and risk management processes. It was a steep learning curve, but our team was quick on their feet and reacted promptly and effectively.

When the shutdown was done, BlueScope Steel’s Asset Manager for No. 5 Blast Furnace, Greg Baldock, recognised the team’s great achievement and valuable assistance in seeing the shutdown through. Well done.

CHALLENGE

Broadspectrum lights up Pitch Black 2016

Broadspectrum’s Defence Base Services (DBS) contract in the Northern Territory was involved in the Pitch Black 2016 exercise – a

three week multi-national Air Force exercise to practice large formation offensive, counter air and offensive air support operations.

This massive exercise had the participation of 2,500 personnel and 115 aircraft from Australia, Canada, France (New Caledonia), Germany, Indonesia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and the United States. It was held on RAAF Base Darwin and RAAF Base Tindal, using airspace over both bases including Bradshaw Training Area and Delamere Air Weapons Range.

Our DBS contract was awarded in October 2014, and we have participated in different activities and initiatives since then.

For this opportunity, Broadspectrum worked closely with the Royal Australian Air Force at Delamere Air Weapons Range to build a camp for 48 members of the Royal Singaporean Air Force (RSAF), with office space, sleeping areas, large potable water supply and a fully functioning field kitchen facility serving three meals a day.

The building team also constructed 40 working demountables at RAAF Darwin to support the visiting forces.

Pitch Black 2016 also required the Base Estate Maintenance and Operation Support (EMOS) Managers to work closely with local subcontractors to provide additional skip bins, portaloos and temporary toilets.

Our RAAF Darwin Senior EMOS Manager also coordinated with Wilson Security for additional security to control entry points that were needed to allow the wide trucks carrying our demountable working accommodation onto the base.

DBS Senior EMOS Manager, Kathy Morgan, commented: “The exercise proved to be a great success and collaboration with our subcontractor to set-up and manage the camps.”

Exercise Pitch Black is considered to be a significant boost to the Northern Territory contributing $25 million to the local economy.

At the recent 2016 South Australian Driver of the Year Award, Light City Buses driver,

Bhadreshkumar (Bhadresh) Patel was announced as the overall winner.

Light City Buses also nominated, Usama Khan (Morphettville Depot) and John Atanasov (St Agnes Depot).

In its first year, the program was launched in association with Scania and the Department Of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) and the three major metro bus providers — Light City Buses, Torrens Transport and South link.

The competition was based on a combination of practical (obstacle course), theory (multiple choice and general type questions) and also a media interview. The process is based on a points system, tallied up to identify the overall state winner.

Manager Fleet and Depot, Alan Castree from the DPTI, presented Bhadresh with the winners shield at a presentation held at the Wingfield Depot. Contract Manager, Wayne Steed and Depot Supervisor Wingfield,

Dom Troia, also attended the presentation.

In late October, Bhadresh flew to Melbourne to attend a national Scania competition where the top three selected will then fly to Perth with the overall national winner announced at the Bus Industry Confederation Conference in November.

Good luck Bhadresh, we wish you all the best at the National Competition.

Adverse weather can have a very heavy impact on our clients’ operations and service delivery,

and one of the most noticeable effects is when bad weather affects electrical power distribution. If the power goes down, thousands of families and businesses might be impacted, and our clients rely on us to assist in their business continuity.

Our electrical team in New Zealand has proven itself many times to assist our clients during urgent situations caused by adverse weather.

In August, our team helped power transmission client Unison to restore electricity to about 400 rural customers living in the Taupo Plains district, which was interrupted due to extreme snow and wind caused by an arctic blast. The damage was described by the company as “the worst damage we have seen in 10 years.”

Unison estimated that 200 poles were broken, twisted and buried under a metre of snow, warning that the rural district is likely to be powerless for longer than a week as it was going to take some time to fix the network devastation.

Our New Zealand team responded quickly. Regional Manager, Brian Rankine, and Project Manager, Craig Shaw, pooled resources from several depots and organised a team of five

linesmen, two 4x4 utes, a 4x4 crane and a 4x4 bucket truck, and joined several other organisations, including contractors and Unison’s neighbouring network operators, to provide manpower and equipment to restore power.

On a different occasion, the New Zealand Haywards Alternating Current (AC) team also responded quickly to revert an urgent adverse situation.

During testing of a spare circuit breaker at the Pauahatanui substation, a tree fell over due to extreme weather conditions (100 km/h winds, rain, hail and sleet) on to an in-service circuit breaker in the Transpower distribution network.

This caused complete power supply loss at the substation and blackouts in the Mana area which led to overloading of the network.

Our team responded quickly, bringing a spare circuit breaker from Wilton substation to Pauahatanui substation and installing it immediately and successfully despite the cold and wet weather conditions. Transpower was extremely happy with the result and the Haywards AC maintenance team received a commendation from the client’s General Manager.

CHALLENGEThe Training Area Range

Management (TARM) team at Puckapunyal recently tackled a

construction challenge to assist with field firing activities.

The team normally constructs up to 300 tank targets per year.

The Army (the Gunnery Wing from the School of Armour) asked us to construct 21 new and different types of targets. The biggest of these would be six metres long, four metres wide and four metres high. In addition, the targets had to be constructed in the onsite Range Control compound, delivered to the training area and then assembled. Once constructed, the Gunnery Wing and TARM team worked together to deliver the targets to the field and set them up.

The targets were constructed using 12 millimetre plywood with 45 square-metre hardwood framing, as the most cost effective construction materials. The solid construction of the targets meant that it took a considerable amount of munitions to destroy them in target practice.

The TARM team proved it had the capability, professionalism and dedication to provide a service to the client that is outside normal requirements and to its deadline.

Broadspectrum versus the beast

Employees from our Puketona site in New Zealand’s Transport Infrastructure Maintenance Division

recently competed in the Sport Northland BEAST mud run.

Team building and health were the focus of the seven kilometre run across farmland, bush, rivers, hills, swamps, generally running through mud, mud and more mud.

The team showed up on a wet Saturday to join 800 other runners and tackle the feared course. Jokes were made, excuses were mentioned, then it was off into the abyss.

After just under an hour, the first Broadspectrum employee crossed the

finish line to cheers of support. Over the next couple of hours, all employees successfully finished, albeit slightly bruised and covered in mud.

The team had so much fun that it is already planning for next year’s race. Congratulations to everyone involved.

INGENUITYPartnering for the futureIn August, leaders from Transpower

and Broadspectrum came together to workshop how the two companies

can partner together for future success.

Sharing Transpower’s forward view, General Manager Grid Projects, Kevin Small, presented key trends - such as climate change, battery storage, urban population growth and changes in technology (such as electric cars) – and how these trends are likely to affect the services Transpower provides in the future.

Executive General Manager, Operations and Maintenance, Richard Nedov, discussed the importance of open communication, trust, and understanding each other’s drivers to work effectively together.

“With so many changes in both of our organisations, and the environment we are working within, there is a need to refresh what we do and how we partner together,” said Richard. Richard also emphasised the opportunity to not

just ‘come along on the journey’ but to actively help to shape it.

With a focus on innovation, Senior Engineer – Lines/Asset Planning Management Team, Steven McAdams, presented the importance of having accurate asset information in Maximo; and the field teams having consistent processes to provide not just asset data but also feedback on assets - both contributing to improved decision making.

During an innovation brainstorming session, almost 100 ideas including 3D spares printing, using robotics for diagnostics, safety and human health management and process automation were discussed with a few ideas chosen for further joint exploration by Transpower and Broadspectrum.

Drones are one technology already widely used in our work together.

Senior Principal Engineer, Andrew Renton presented on the importance of good, safe, properly planned and managed drone flights, and Innovations Engineer, Matt De Bono, provided a drone flight demonstration.

Afternoon session around innovation.

Transpower and Broadspectrum’s leaders..

Our live line transmission team in Australia has proven again that being innovative in our work

generates gains for ourselves and our clients.

In what is an Australian first – and possibly a world first – our team was able to increase the height of electricity transmission towers while the lines remained live with a power feed of 132kV.

This very specialised work was done for our power transmission client ElectraNet in South Australia, as they needed to upgrade their power line capacity without disturbing the electrical transmission service.

This is usually done by building a second transmission line to increase the supply. However, as this is a very costly solution, it was decided that the upgrade would be achieved by increasing the tower height on the transmission line. This would allow for the tower to carry a line of higher capacity while maintaining safe ground clearances.

The team put together all the work methodology statements in place prior to the work. They conducted safety analyses and went through rigorous planning to neutralise risk.

Once all the safety measures, the specialised equipment, the methodology and the skilled employees were put together, they proceeded with this specialised work.

The results were outstanding – zero harm, a happy client and no interruption of power transmission at all.

More power to the people

Live wire. Two cranes hold the live 132kV lines at bay whilst a third crane lifts the extended top section of the tower to put it in place. A bucket lift provides a safe platform for our crew to work from.

The Electrical Services team in New Zealand were continually fixing reel-winders that are used

for replacing high-voltage wires on the National Grid for electric power transmission.

The cost to repair them was minor – as the reel-winders were manufactured in the 1970s, the spare parts were not expensive. However, the downtime on each of these repairs resulted in 10 to 15 employees waiting for the equipment to be fixed.

A solution was to replace the reel-winders with more modern versions, but the ones available on the market were too small for the magnitude of work. As the reel rolled more wire, it became heavier and its hydraulic motor would strain under the weight.

The Electrical Services team solved the dilemma through a Better Way initiative.

They consulted with the engineer of their current plant, gathered information from him as a subject matter expert and then designed and fabricated a compact, self-powered hydraulic wire reel-winder. The new equipment also includes the added health and safety feature of an ‘axle-less drum to drum stand’ installation. This eliminates the manual lifting and fitting of the heavy drum stand axles on the drums.

This Better Way initiative has reduced labour costs and the risk of injury while raising the profile of the team with the client for its specialist wiring innovations.

Our roads maintenance team in Queensland has developed a Visual Management System

(VMS) as a Better Way innovation to keep track of work in their depots.

This process has already introduced improvements in their processes and is delivering great results.

The VMS allows everyone to highlight areas of concern, whether it be safety or productivity, and puts everyone on alert to improve the way that they work, and those areas where the team has been doing well to raise awareness of the team’s achievements.

Leading hands (LH) have welcomed the use of these visual aids as they communicate relevant information in their pre-starts. The visual aids offer mock road scenarios where a LH can take a crew through a traffic guidance set up, allowing for detailed questions prior to going onto the roads where traffic may be travelling up to 100 kilometres per hour. The team gains a greater understanding of the task and how to complete it safely and more productively.

The team also uses a faults board for plant and equipment, in conjunction with the normal vehicle start lists. This enhances the visibility of faults to the rest of the team and prevents the use of any faulty equipment.

After many months of planning and development, Broadspectrum opened the

Spectra Café at the Defence Plaza Melbourne (DPM) in June.

An innovation from the Estate and Infrastructure Group, the café was opened to reduce the security risk of Broadspectrum and Defence

employees entering and exiting the building by providing an in-house convenient service.

The coffee cart offers a full range of espresso coffee and drinks, sandwiches, soups and baked goods. The cafe has proved popular, with over 800 coffees made in the first week alone. The coffee aromas and fantastic

food display have created much interest and excitement throughout the building.

Our team is looking forward to delivering fantastic coffee to DPM residents and visitors.

Our team at the ExxonMobil Altona Refinery Alliance is pushing itself to deliver

$3.6 million worth of Better Way savings in 2016, of which they have already achieved $1.8 million savings in the first half of the year. The team is quite confident that they will achieve this ambitious goal based on previous results with Better Way savings of $2 million in 2014 and $3 million in 2015.

Since they started to participate in the Better Way program in 1999, our Altona refinery team has submitted over 900 Better Way initiatives, with 753 resolved, 125 closed-not-actioned and 23 currently in-progress. Their well-established innovation culture is championed by our Quality Assurance and Control Coordinator on site, Lenin Apelgren, and has the support of a whole Better Way Continuous Improvement Team (CIT), formed by the Broadspectrum’s Construction, Maintenance and Engineering (CME) Alliance Manager, Site Superintendent, Quality Manager, site engineers and planners, Bureau Veritas staff and alliance partners, including various contractors on site. They all work together on the Better Way initiatives and then send them to the ExxonMobil

Altona Maintenance Manager for implementation.

Many of their Better Way initiatives are about questioning established processes and improve them in terms of safety, quality and cost effectiveness.

Following this model, they have been able to improve their way to fix and connect pipes, which usually requires hot work, welding, a long downtime, specialist services and scaffolding. Now they use Lokring compression fittings, which are a permanent fix, do not require hot work, can be fixed from a boom lift, do not require a specialist to be installed and reduce the time from isolation to return-to-service to two hours. The results of this initiative were so good that ExxonMobil nominated Altona refinery as champion site to introduce this solution.

A simpler initiative, but also very useful for our staff, is the Pipe Beveller Trolley put together by our apprentice boilermaker Allan Wilson. Quite practically, he sourced excess materials and fabricated a trolley to safely store and transport the pipe bevelling tools. Now our team is able to move and use the bevelling tools without any manual handling issues.

Congratulations to our ExxonMobil Altona Refinery team and their contribution to the Better Way program, and all the best for conquering their Better Way savings challenge this year.
