GREATER BURLINGTON YMCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2015

Kyle Dodson President & CEO

Dear Friends,

The Y mission is to build strong communities by involving youth, adults and families in programs and activities that develop spirit, mind and body. By working with partners, our efforts are amplified, allowing us to have a greater impact on communities across Vermont. Poised to mark our 150th anniversary, we have a significant history to celebrate. We best honor that history, our partnerships, and the more than 14,000 people served annually by Y programs by building a strong future.

With the purchase of property just 150 steps from our current downtown location and the announcement of our intention to construct a new child development and wellness center, 2015 was an important year in the evolution of how we will serve our community. While we are in the early stages of planning what our next Y will look like, we know that it opens the door to new opportunities and partnerships. From access to affordable, quality childcare, to delivering wellness programming in new and innovative ways, our Y will remain a leader in addressing the needs of our community.

Where society falls short, the Y steps in. Building upon our partnerships and working with civic leaders, our donors, members and others, we will continue to be a leader in addressing the issues impacting youth, adults and families.

In this report, we share just a few of the ways the work of the Y impacted our community in 2015. More importantly, it provides a reminder of how vitally important the Y is as an agent for change. We have never been better positioned to write the next chapter in our Y’s history.

Sincerely,

Renee Bourget-Place Chair

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

The Y is where kids learn their ABCs, learn to share, learn about sportsmanship, learn the importance of physical activity, and, most importantly, learn how to be themselves. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. Community Need: Vermont faces a shortage of quality, affordable childcare and early education programs. Our Y’s Impact: The Y offers families quality, NAEYC accredited programs where acceptance is need-blind. This past year, 47% of children attending Y infant & toddler and preschool programs received tuition assistance through state subsidy, the Y’s financial assistance program, or both. 157 families received a total of $250,608 in Y assistance, ensuring their children did not lose the opportunity for quality early care and education because of their financial circumstances. Community Need: Summer is a time when far too many children experience a reading loss and lack healthy food options. This in a state where 59% of fourth graders are not “proficient” readers and 38,000 kids depend on the free and reduced lunch program for nutritious meals. Our Y’s Impact: The Y’s Camp Greylock ensures the benefits of a physically active day camp experience are open to everyone. 50% of campers received financial assistance in 2015 and 15 slots were reserved each week for children in the state foster care system. Campers received a nutritious lunch and snack at no cost through our partnership with the Burlington School District’s summer food program. And, knowing that 61% of low-income families have no age-appropriate books in the home, the Y invited the Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF) to camp and each child received two books of their choosing.

HEALTHY LIVING

At the Y, we’re passionate about improving our community’s health and wellbeing by providing programs and activities that

promote wellness, reduce risk of disease and help others reclaim their health. This is achieved not only through our

traditional fitness programs, but by identifying ways to expand our reach beyond our walls. Community Need: Providing Vermonters with resources for healthier living. Our Y’s Impact: The Y — through the delivery of our Y Diabetes Prevention Program — is a recognized leader in addressing the rising incidence of diabetes. The Vermont

Department of Health and the Vermont Blueprint for Health asked our Y to oversee delivery of that program and five

Page 4: CELEBRATING HISTORY BUILDING A FUTURE · Statement of Activities For the Year ending December 31, 2015 Support and Revenue Program Service Revenue 7,811,389 Financial Assistance (605,060)

additional health self-management programs across Vermont. In 2015, the first full year of that relationship, 244 free workshops with over 1,400 participants — in areas ranging from diabetes prevention, to chronic disease management to smoking cessation — took place.

Community Need: Identifying ways to curb rising obesity rates. Our Y’s Impact: Using the Y’s nationally recognized Healthy Eating Physical Activity (HEPA) standards as a starting point, this past year our Y convened a summit of educators and health professionals from across Vermont. The summit focused on the design of a set of shared commit-ments to help ensure Vermont’s children have access to healthy eating and physical activity in early care and afterschool programs. By addressing this issue with our youngest Vermonters, we’re taking concrete steps to stem rising obesity rates.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Our mission, presence and long history of building strong partner-ships allow us to deliver lasting personal and social change in

communities across Vermont.

Community Need: Open and inclusive opportunities for all members of our community. Our Y’s Impact: We work very hard to ensure our doors are open to everyone who needs a place to go to become health-ier, confident, connected and secure. Here are just a few of the ways this goal was accomplished in 2015: • In 2015, 51 children and adults with autism each received

six one-on-one adaptive swim lessons at no cost through a partnership we forged with Autism Speaks.

• Howard Center teaches us all about the value of each and every

member of our community. We nurture a long-established relationship with the Howard Center that in 2015 saw Howard clients make over

1,600 visits to our Y.

• Over $605,000 in financial assistance ensured that quality early education and childcare was not out of reach for families; that no child was denied the opportunity for a summer camp experience; and that better health through Y membership and programs was not sacrificed because of limited resources.

“The Y stands for something . . . oneness! Everyone is welcome. It’s available to anyone.”
