Message from the Board President

Message from the Executive Director

Hello and Happy Spring! I absolutely love this time of the year. New growth is all around us, in the plants and animals and in ourselves. Speaking of growth, Father Bills’ Kitchen has grown to completion. It is a wonderful addition to our St. Vincent’s campus. Tarin, our Art on The Edge director did a beautiful job designing our donor wall. If you missed our open house on March 6th, please stop by to take a look. The amenities laundry, showers, meals, of this expanded facility are being utilized as predicted. Thank you again to all our donors who made and are still making this expansion possible.

We also have a lot of exciting events and happenings in the near future to announce. St. Vincent of CDA is celebrating 70 years of providing services and empowerment to our neighbors in our community. What a legacy to continue. St. Vincent’s prides

itself on providing a hand up not a hand out and it is working. We’ve had several clients move thru our housing programs and are now proud owners of their very own homes. That is what St. Vincent strives for, to give a helping hand so that our clients can meet their own personal goals of becoming self-sufficient. Each and every client deserves to be treated with kindness and respect and our St. Vincent staff and volunteers do just that, often going above and beyond their job description. You may have read about one of St. Vincent’s young employees who took off his own shoes to give to a barefoot and homeless man because our store was already closed for the day. I am studying a book entitled Radical Hospitality at a Benedictine Prayer group that talks about just that, doing something in the name of hospitality that is risky or uncomfortable. It’s about doing something to make life easier for someone else at your own expense. It’s not to say we don’ t need to keep a sense of safety around us, but it is reaching out a hand to pull someone up that needs it. It is easy to be generous or friendly with someone you like or have things in common with, and it is another thing to be kind or generous to someone that may be or look different. I am so

proud to be a part of this organization that embodies this radical hospitality.

May 26th thru the 28th our local St. Vincent’s is hosting the 2016 Western Regional Conference at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. It should be very interesting and I’m excited to be a part of it. Dave Barringer, National CEO of St. Vincent de Paul was here and spoke at our monthly staff breakfast on Thursday May 27th at the St. Thomas Center.

As with many non-profits, we continue to be busy pursuing ways to fund our many services and are always in need of donations. Thank you again to all of you who donate. You are so important, not only to St. Vincent’s, but to the whole community. What we need to remember is that even a small donation can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

Coming up this summer please save some important dates, and July16th for our annual Steak Fry renamed to St Vinny’s Party in The Park, which this year will be held in the beautiful McEuen park by the library instead of the fairgrounds. The Kelly Hughes band will again play for us. Do come and support St. Vincent’s. Thank you and have a blessed Summer.

First, let me say thank you. Thank you for your support of St Vincent de Paul North Idaho and everything we offer to our community. I cannot believe that 2016 is half over.

As we move into the second half of the year we will have just hosted the St Vincent de Paul Western Region Conference. This is an annual event that involves the 13 western states coming to a community. Coeur d’Alene and the region has a lot to offer and the participants took advantage of everything we have to offer. The highlight for us was that the National CEO for St Vincent de Paul was here for the first time, spoke to our staff at our monthly staff meeting and got to see what we do locally.

It was a proud moment for us to “show off” a little.

Another piece of great news is that we will be closing on the purchase of the HELP Center before the end of June. With the help of the Capital Campaign and an amazing 7 year collaboration with the City of Coeur d’Alene, we finally have the funds to purchase the region’s only “one stop shop”. For the past seven years the HELP Center has been our flagship in providing service to not just the homeless but those who are one paycheck away. The HELP Center houses 18 different programs and 24 different services. While we don’t believe in a hand out but rather a hand out, the HELP Center is currently seeing an average of 200 people per day.

After an eight year run, the Steak Fry is going to evolve into another, bigger and more fun event- St Vinny’s Party in the Park. We wanted to make a family friendly event where we can bring everyone together, eat a little, dance a little, and maybe tell the St Vincent de Paul story in the process. We will again have the amazing Kelly Hughes

Band with Colby and Justin, and the BBQ King himself, Jeff Selle! We are hoping this event will be every bit as popular as the Steak Fry because the proceeds go to support the areas only Warming Center. It may not be cold now, but it will be.

The first half of 2016 has been a humdinger! Staff changes, guest increases, less funds…but St Vincent de Paul North Idaho and our staff have met the challenges.

There is a great quote that says “we judge ourselves by our intentions, others judge us by our actions”. While our intentions are to help our community, there are times we aren’t able to. But our hope is our actions will always be to treat everyone who walks through our door with respect, dignity, and the best customer service that they will have no choice but to talk about us.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, our President Chris Fritz and the wonderful staff at St Vincent de Paul North Idaho, thank you.

It's not every day that we have the opportunity to give someone the clothes off our backs.Recently, 17-year-old Justin Sego had that opportunity and he didn't hesitate a bit. "It’s the right thing to do," Justin said Friday afternoon. "It’s how I was raised."

A few weekends ago, Justin was just getting off of work at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Coeur d'Alene when he saw a homeless man approaching the closed store. The man was barefoot. "We were already locked up and everybody was out," Justin said. "He was about to walk away and I got out and asked him if he wanted some shoes and he said, 'Yeah, sure!" Justin proceeded to remove his own shoes and give them to the homeless man, whose feet were about Justin's size. "They were just my work shoes," the humble teen said. "I have plenty of shoes at my house." The man also asked Justin for a ride to the St. Vincent Community Dining Hall, and again he didn't hesitate to help. He just had to wait for his coworker, Bob Frisk, who carpooled with him that day.

Frisk said Justin's act of kindness went way above and beyond the call of duty. "People say how selfish today's teenagers are, that they really don’t care about anybody but themselves," Frisk said. "I’d like to say Justin is a perfect example of how this just isn’t true. There are a lot of really good, caring teens out there and Justin is a perfect

example of that." Because of his selflessness, Justin earned the Exceptional Vincentian Award at his work. It's an honor given to those who epitomize the true charitable nature of St. Vincent de Paul. It comes with a cast award and his photo has been hung on the thrift store wall.

Justin's mom, Kimberly Sego, said her son asked why people would make such a big deal out of what he did. "I said, 'Honey, I think because as we get older, we're all given opportunities somewhere in our life to do such a kind act, and as adults, we tend to overthink it and that moment passes,'" she said. "The adults in the community are like, 'He did it, he did this act of kindness without overthinking it.' Adults are inspired by that because he didn’t miss that moment."

When he's not at work, Justin is a Lake City High School junior and dual-enrolled at North Idaho College. He likes hiking, camping, playing video games and enjoying other normal teenager activities. He has four brothers and a sister, including a fraternal twin. Although he doesn't know where his career path will take him, he does plan to enlist in the Peace Corps when he graduates. "My mom always encouraged me to go when I was younger so I've gotten interested in it and done the research and it’s something I want to do," he said. "I want to help people."

Kimberly said Justin seized the moment to show his heart for God and his fellow brothers and sisters. "I think a lot of us miss it," she said. "I was just super proud that he didn’t miss it." Justin said he was just treating someone how he would want to be treated. "If I was in the same position that he was, I would hope that someone would do the same thing for me," he said.

Exceptional Vincentian Awarded

As Housing Director, I am immensely pleased with the enormous accomplishments we have done thus far in Spring 2016. Don’t be exemplary. Be exceptional! We try to make obtainable goals, and then we strive to exceed them.

We have 13 permanent subsidized housing properties under our management. It is our mission to provide permanent housing without prejudice, treating each household we serve with respect, fairness, integrity, and compassion. We strive to excel beyond the expectations of our governing agents. We take pride that we are not the typical low-income housing management and work hard to achieve a quality relationship with our tenants.

So far this Spring, we have put on a brand new roof at Meadowood Glen II, a senior facility in Post Falls, Idaho. We have built new planter boxes at Meadowood Glen I, our senior/disabled facility in Post Falls. We have fully painted the exterior and doors of the Ross Point I and Ross Point II Multi-Family Apartments in Post Falls. We have painted the townhouse building of the KAMPS Multi-Family Housing Apartments in Post Falls, with expectation to complete the remaining buildings in the near future. We have re-roofed the Star Haven Transitional Housing for Homeless Veterans in Coeur d’Alene. Finally, we have purchased new playground equipment for our Ross Point East Multi-Family Apartments in Post Falls. I am so proud to work with such an amazing housing and maintenance team, all who are dedicated, caring, and compassionate in their duties, and always willing to go the extra mile.

By the NumbersEvery January, HUD holds a Point in Time (PIT) count. On January 27, 2016 volunteers went out to

survey the sheltered and unsheltered in the five northern counties of Idaho. The data from this count

helps determine the amount of funding awarded for homeless programs across the state, reports

changes among the homeless population and raises public awareness of homelessness. Data from

the one-night PIT count are the primary sources used to measure the progress in meeting the national

strategic goal of preventing and ending homelessness.

257 Unsheltered homeless193 Sheltered Homeless

The five northern counties make up 20% of the State of Idaho’s homeless population.
