"By his cross of holy poverty I mean: to live a life of continual abstinence, not eating meat, fasting dai-ly, going barefoot and enduring the cold, sleeping on hard beds, wearing poor clothing, being content with scanty and coarse food, and bearing the burden of labor, both manual and spiritual. Whoever at the hour of death is found possessing anything, in fact, or in deliberate desire, will be dispossessed of the kingdom of heaven. Live and die truly poor, my dearly beloved daughters, just as our sweet Saviour died on the cross for us; for if it seems that few love him in this way, it is all the more reason that we should so love him. (Testament of St. Colette)” For the Franciscans Jesus began his life poor, in the stable/cave, and ended his life poor on the cross. Franciscans find poverty to be very attractive. Again, it is not poverty for the sake of poverty but poverty that helps to imitate the poverty of Jesus. Franciscans are one of the most joyful groups of people. Adaptability is one of the descriptions that can be given to them. Many of them are very much socially oriented. Poor Clare Colettines walk barefoot and they truly try to live the simplicity and poverty of Christ. St. Colette and other Franciscans have found that physical imitation of Christ helps them to be closer to Christ. What aspects of Christ's life speaks to us the most and what can we do about it? Some good news: Joe Wojtowicz became our new Business Manager and Deacon Martin Carrillo became our new Direc-tor of Share Faith. With both of these positions filled, we will experience some changes in their job descrip-tions. I am very happy that finally we filled these two positions and that the parish can be served well. I am thankful to Joe for helping us in the interim for the last few months. Also, I am thankful to Val Zemko, the RE Board and especially Lori Brandt for helping to carry on with the Share Faith ministries. Last Sunday I participated in the Ecumenical Service at the Rolling Meadows Community Church. It was beautiful to get together with other Christians. Using the expression of Fr. Benedict Groescher, CFR: It was good to be among people who are devoted to Jesus Christ. Devotion to Jesus Christ is true ecumenism. However, I was sad I could not share in communion with them but … we pray one day it will happen. On some level we believe this is Christ (real or symbolic) but we do not agree how it happens. School begins on Wednesday, August 16th. Share Faith starts on Saturday, August 19th. Our Picnic Mass is on Sunday, August 27th. Some of you have asked me: “What does Pax mean?” In Latin it means peace.
Pax,
Fr. Michal [email protected]

Pax, P. Michal Lewon

MINISTRY OF CARE Ordinary People Ministering to Ordinary People
In Extraordinary Circumstances
This beautiful ministry reaches out to the sick, elderly, and handicapped by bringing prayer, presence and Eu-charist to those in a hospital or nursing home or at home. This service is delivered by lay individuals or teams directed by the Ministry of Care Coordinator.
HOW DOES ONE RECEIVE THIS CARE? It is important to the parish to stay in touch with its sick and/or elderly and tend their sacramental and spiritual needs. If a person cannot attend Mass, even for a short period, she/he is urged to request a Ministry of Care visit. As soon as possible, the sick person or a family member is asked to call the Parish Office and request that Ho-ly Communion be brought to the home, nursing home or hospital. For a home bound person, the Ministry of Care Coordinator will assign a Minister of Care to visit. In the case of a patient in a nursing home or hospital, the Coordinator will aler t those who minister in the respective place to seek out the parishioner and add her or him to the list of those to be visited.
WHO CAN BE A MINISTER OF CARE?

Good Listeners
Loving, caring, and willing to spend time with the sick and suffering
Open to sharing prayer and faith with the sick
Willing to undertake the necessary initial training for the ministry
Committed to enriching training in ministry via scheduled meetings

Notes from the Music Director
Why THAT Music?”
This week we'll continue the discussion on the three judgements used to determine whether a music piece is appropriate for mass. Last time, I introduced the "pastoral" judgement, in which we ensure that the music applies to the congregation, the people the church serves. We ensure that the music connects the people to the mass and allows the Holy Spirit to move more freely among the congregation and provide inspiration and hope. The previous week, we talked about the liturgical judgment, in which we looked at the time of year or place in the mass in which the music piece was being played. The liturgical season we are in typically determines the choice of music chosen for the mass during that time period. The third and final judgement is the musical judgement. It basically asks the question, "Is this good music?" As a music director, I look at whether or not the music will engage and move the congregation for the people to deepen their faith or does the music take away/distract from the Eucharist? We are careful to choose music that doesn't cheapen the experience of mass and the body of Christ. As there are many talented musical artists in the world, not every song we hear on the radio will be appropriate to play during mass, as it may distract versus bring focus to the Holy Eucharist. God calls us to be close to him and the music ministry is just one way in which we can grow close to Christ and provide our gifts to Him and the parish. I invite any parishioners with a heart for God and a love for music to reach out to me if you're interested in joining our adult choir. Rehearsals will begin in the fall, and I am always looking to expand our group. Prayerfully consider this ministry if you have the time and willingness to dedicate to this group. We would love to have you!
