Greg Neumeyer, J.D. Executive Director, Kirkwood Foundation

Dear Friends,

On December 17, 1969, a group of visionary leaders incorporated the Kirkwood Community College Foundation. The original directors were James Maurice, John Vernon, Morris Allen, Theodore Johnson, Richard Mineck, and Richard Elwood. We are thankful that this group had the foresight to establish a fundraising entity to benefit Kirkwood Community College and its students.

There have been many employees, board members, friends, and donors who have helped the Foundation grow. Over the years we have been able to grow, and now we have close to $36 million in assets. We now administer and distribute over $3 million per year in scholarships to Kirkwood students. We also provide support and equipment for Kirkwood programs. We appreciate the support from all of our donors over these past 50 years.

As we look to the future, the Foundation is engaging in a Strategic Planning process to ensure we continue to grow this support of Kirkwood and its students in the future. Our board and staff are working to develop action plans to make sure the Foundation can continue to support the needs of Kirkwood and its students.

We know the financial challenges for students will continue to increase as costs increase. Today’s students also face mental health issues, food insecurity issues, and other life issues that provide added stress that may impair their ability to complete their education. We are looking at ways to assist students so that these barriers do not get in the way of graduation.

This Annual Report is in recognition of your generosity. Thank you for providing opportunities for Kirkwood students!

Sincerely,

Dr. Lori SundbergPresident, Kirkwood Community College

2018 – 19 HIGHLIGHTSDuring fiscal year 2019, the Foundation awarded

$3,068,427 in scholarships from 336 internal

scholarship funds to 1,500 students; $3.2 million is

budgeted to be awarded in fiscal year 2020.

From July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2019, the total assets

of the Kirkwood Foundation doubled from $14

million to $35.5 million. During that same

10-year period, the Kirkwood Foundation awarded

more than $24 million in institutional scholarships

to Kirkwood students.

The following 2018 - 19 Endowed Faculty Chair

recipients were honored at a program on April 24,

2019: Lori Merlak, “The Impact of Global Education

on Student Learning – Comparing Methods of

Instruction,” supported by the Henry B. and Patricia

B. Tippie Endowed Chair; Lydia Hartunian, “Pop

Up Seminars for Critical Thinking Skills”; Shell

Feijo, “More than Anything: A Memoir of Survival”;

Peter D. Jauhiainen, “The Christian Right’s Assault

on Public Education”; Nicole Alsaker, “Development

of Teamwork and Communication Skills in a Health

Care IPE Simulation Setting,” supported by the

Kirkwood Endowed Chairs.

Kirkwood Alumni & Friends presented the eighth

annual Celebration of Success on April 25,

2019, recognizing distinguished alumni, business

partners, and leaders in higher education. Honorees

included: Aaron Amstutz, Dr. Clayton T. Parks,

and Bruce Teague III, Distinguished Alumni;

Centro, Inc., President’s Award; and Joe Greathouse,

Trustees’ Award.

The annual President’s Circle Reception,

recognizing donors of $1,000 or more, was held on

May 15, 2019. The event included a special preview

of the new student center project.

Kirkwood Alumni & Friends also hosted its annual

veteran’s dinner on June 20, 2019. For the sixth year

of the Alumni Veteran Dinner, guests blended the

festivities with the Freedom Festival’s Tribute to

Heroes Dinner. During a special VIP reception for

the honored veteran alumni, keynote speaker Chad

Hennings shared a personal message and took the

time to shake hands and be available for photos.

This annual event is Kirkwood Alumni & Friends’

way of expressing gratitude for the veteran alumni

and the service they have provided, along with

appreciation for being Kirkwood alums.

The Kirkwood Foundation honored members of

the Samuel J. Kirkwood Society on Oct. 9, 2019.

We were pleased to welcome nine new members of

2019 CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS RECIPIENTS

Centro, Inc.

Centro, Inc. has been an invaluable partner to Kirkwood Community College for many years. Headquartered in North Liberty, Centro is the largest custom rotational molder of plastics in North America, having manufacturing facilities in Iowa, Illinois, North Dakota, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and an operation in Brazil. Dick Rozek founded the company in 1970 (after a career in Major League Baseball) to support the needs of original equipment manufacturers for custom rotationally molded products. Today, with Dick’s son Gary Rozek serving as chairman and majority owner, the company has become an international industry leader. Centro has partnered with Kirkwood by taking an active role in the Advanced Manufacturing Industry Sector Board and assisting in the development of the Leadership in Manufacturing program through Kirkwood’s Training and Outreach Services. Gary has personally established both the Centro Endowed Scholarship and the Gary Rozek Endowed Golf Scholarship at Kirkwood. He served on the Facilities Foundation board from 1997 – 2014 and joined the Kirkwood Foundation Board of Directors in 2014, serving as vice president since 2015. Kirkwood’s strong collaboration with Centro and the Rozek family has been critical to further developing Iowa’s future workers in advanced manufacturing.

Dr. Clayton T. Parks | Nominated by: Nicole Hasenbank

Graduating from Kirkwood in 1994, Clayton Parks had plans to become a large animal veterinarian. Clayton quickly found that his enthusiasm for making people smile carried professional merit, as he discovered a passion for dentistry. He went on to receive his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Iowa in 1998 and Master of Science degree and Certificate in Orthodontics in 2000. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and is a partner in Parks and Schmit Orthodontics, located in Cedar Rapids and Marion. He is also a visiting assistant professor at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in the Department of Orthodontics. Clayton is actively involved in the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, and their component societies. He is also a Diplomate with the American Board of Orthodontics. Clayton serves on the board of trustees at both Waypoint Services and the Boys and Girls Club of Cedar Rapids. He and his wife, Kim (Kirkwood ’90), are proud parents of J.C. (currently at Kirkwood) and Lindsay (former Kirkwood student).

Bruce Teague III | Nominated by: Eric Weiler

Bruce Teague’s story is an inspiring example of determination leading to success. Bruce originally came to Iowa City at age 17 from Chicago. He’s grateful to have overcome being a recipient of food assistance and Section 8 housing. He worked many jobs to help support his family, eventually finding his way to Kirkwood’s Nursing program, from which he graduated in 2002 with an Associate of Applied Science degree. He later transferred to the University of Iowa, where he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Passionate about his service to others, Bruce now owns two businesses that support individuals in need in the local community. Caring Hands & More designs appropriate, coordinated plans of care for individuals of all ages and ethnic and cultural backgrounds, while CHARM Homes specializes in providing rental properties to seniors, persons with disabilities, individuals in crisis, and people in hospice care. Additionally, Bruce is in the process of building a multigenerational daycare facility in Iowa City catering to both the elderly and preschool-aged children. He was elected to the Iowa City Council in 2018 and currently volunteers for Iowa City Compassion and the Johnson County Task Force on Aging, among several other respected organizations.

Joe Greathouse | Nominated by: James Robinson

As an associate professor of Construction Management at Kirkwood, Joe Greathouse has had a profound impact on his students and the entire college.
