2-Eleven in Costa Rica

Early 2009, Lotus Sport built two 2-Eleven race cars for a customer in Costa Rica, Central America. These cars were based on the successful Lotus Sport 2-Eleven GT4 Supersport car, with some GT4 elements being substituted to suit the customer’s own requirements and race specific regulations. The cars feature the naturally aspirated 192 PS engine with the standard 6 speed gearbox and are proving to be successful on the Central American circuits.

Richard Eisenberg, Driver and Team Principal, commented “In our 2nd race event in the new Quiznos sponsored Lotus 2 Eleven, we shattered Autodromo La Guacima’s 2.1 Kilometre track record by almost 2 full seconds, achieved our first Pole Position of the year, and won both of the weekend race events.

With these 2 wins and our recent 3rd place podium finish in the famous “Three hours of Costa Rica”, we are now the points leader in the Costa Rica GT3 National Championship Series. With these great results, we are extremely optimistic and looking forward to entering the prized Central American GT3 Championship in September. We previously won the Central American Championship in 2006 in a Lotus Exige Cup car, also sponsored by Quiznos.”

This is a great example where the Lotus Sport team used their knowledge and expertise to work closely with a client leading to positive results. Lotus Sport are excited to have these cars racing in Central America and look forward to future success with the 2-Eleven in this area of the world.”

Lotus Sport DisclaimerThe Lotus Elise and Exige are designed as road going sports cars. Lotus recognises that owners may wish to use their cars occasionally on closed circuit tracks to experience the car’s full range of dynamic capabilities. However, use of these cars in a competitive manner, including timed runs or laps, is not endorsed by Lotus. This type of timed, competitive use will invalidate the vehicle warranty and requires appropriate levels of expert vehicle preparation and servicing.

Lotus recommends that all local speed laws must be obeyed and safety belts are to be worn at all times.

Lotus recommends that vehicles are safety checked before and after any track activity. The Pre-Track Check List (LSL520c updated 01/09) should be followed. This general list is not exhaustive and is provided only as a guide to assist a properly qualified technician, who must use their own expertise and judgement as to what checks are appropriate in each case. Please also refer to important safety information.

Fitting of these parts will invalidate some aspects of your vehicle warranty. Details available on request. Customers are responsible for familiarising themselves with these details before ordering parts.

Genuine Lotus replacement parts and accessories, which are not intended for track use only, carry 12 month’s parts warranty subject to the terms and conditions set out in the Owner’s Handbook Warranty Statement. Suggested Upgrades

Developing the handling of your Lotus for track use is possible through the wide range of parts and upgrades offered by Lotus Sport. Upgrading your standard car is possible with the help of the Lotus Sport workshop or your local dealer.

It is important that customers who exploit full vehicle performance on the track take appropriate action to optimise safety and vehicle durability. Please see Important Safety Information.

Lotus Sport recommend the following route of development parts to enhance the specification of your vehicle. These parts are focused on an Elise in standard specification, although the procedure of parts development also applies to the current Exige range.

Lotus Sport Wheel UpgradeThe initial area for consideration could be the standard wheels and tyres. Upgrading to a set of Lotus Sport 240R wheels, complimented by a set of Yokohama AO48R tyres, will increase grip whilst also cutting road wheel mass. These wheels allow flatter tyre profile with bigger contact patch, delivering better impulse, stability and enhanced feedback. Also allows fitment of Yokohama slicks in future.

Version 4 September 2009

Peter Moss’ Elise 111R has been significantly developed by Lotus Sport with a range of performance upgrades and built to Peter’s unique specification.

After purchasing the car in 2006, finished with special edition type 23 colour scheme, Peter has comprehensively modified the car with the help of Lotus Sport, using a wide range of performance parts. This has given a significant edge to the cars performance whilst also improving the track capability and longevity.

How did the development of your car begin?

“When I purchased the car I had the idea of competing in the Lotus Cup Europe series, in the regularity side of the championship. Very little is needed to bring the car up to a good specification, indeed Glenn and Russell only recommended a change of wheels and tyres. As I discussed my thoughts with Russell he suggested that it would also be worth considering a range of other modifications to make the car increasingly competitive for UK track use. By this stage I had the intention of also competing in some UK sprints and hill climbs.”

“The first modifications were a set of Lotus Sport forged wheels in high power silver and AO48R LTS tyres. This really helps to make the most of the front chassis grip available and limit the understeer characteristic present with the standard car. My ECU was also reprogrammed by Lotus Sport with their track specific programme. Whilst this does not increase engine power, it gives a smoother power delivery over the rev range and also ensures the engine is on it’s high cam when changing gear, not dropping off cam with the rev drop.”

“To match and make best use of these tyres a set of Ohlins 2 Way adjustable dampers were fitted all round. These taughten the chassis response and give great feedback on the track. Whilst the road comfort decreases slightly it was not as bad as expected, indeed in some cases I have found it improves the ride. This also gives me the ability to fine

tune my car for the circuit, the changes making a noticeable difference in car feel. Lotus Sport also recommended that I fit an adjustable front anti roll bar at this stage. This is tuned to work with the Ohlins dampers and also gives me noticeable changes to chassis set up on the track.”

“The next stage was the AP Racing big brake kit. This is a very worthwhile upgrade, especially when fitted with the Goodridge hose set and Pagid RS14 pads. The feel and feedback from these brakes is fantastic and they offer great performance even from cold. Obviously for track and hard road use the cooling efficiency of these brakes is far improved over the standard parts, maintaining pedal feel and performance.”

The developmental nature of fitting these parts has allowed my driving ability to grow with the car. In this respect it is possible to use the full range of performance parts available to develop the car from a near standard car right up to full cup specification. Through each stage of this evolution it has been possible to fully understand what each part has done to alter the car.

Why did you choose to come to Lotus Sport?

“The service that I receive from Lotus Sport is individual and tailored to my requirements. Opposed to going through a brochure and selecting a range of parts, I was only recommended the parts that I actually needed at the time. I also enjoy the fact that the technicians working on my car are the same technicians who build the Lotus race and special build cars. The knowledge that the technicians have of the race cars is carried over to my car, the small and important details correct in every respect.”

“Perhaps the most important investment in my car has been completing the Lotus Sport Driver Training experience, ensuring I am making the most of my standard car before I embarked on any changes. This was an excellent way of learning how to use my standard chassis to the full before increasing the dynamic performance. Lotus Sport offer a complete service for me, from manufacturing the parts I want, to fitting them and preparing myself and the car for competition. This range of services means I can make the best of my Lotus in all respects.”

Version 4 September 2009

Lotus Sport began with the Lotus Sport Elise race series in 1999, developing a range of track orientated modifications to bring the standard Elise road car up to full race specification. The Exige series 1 can trace its routes back directly to these cars, indeed the prototype vehicle was one of these race cars. Lotus Sport then went forward to develop the Exige Cup 190 and consequently the Exige 240R road car.

The range of performance packages and parts that Lotus Sport offer are direct development parts from these race cars. For example the Pagid RS14 track brake pads and Goodridge braided hose set were used to suit the needs of the early Exige Cup 190 cars. This dramatically improved the life and longevity of the braking system for track use.

The Ohlins damper set up was also developed by the Lotus Sport engineers, giving two way adjustable damping and simple ride height adjustment whilst offering ultimate chassis control for track use. Complimenting these dampers the Lotus Sport engineers developed the adjustable uprated front anti roll bar to ensure exact chassis control and optimisation at any circuit. To make the most of the power output, Lotus Sport developed a plate type limited slip differential, ensuring maximum corner exit speed. Other well proven and essential powertrain upgrades also include the fitting of the Accusump kit and AP Racing clutch.

Safety related items also feature strongly amongst this range, developed and rigorously tested throughout many seasons of racing and track work. The 6 point roll cage is bolted directly to the load bearing large section side sills and can be removed for road driving due to the bolt in design. The Lotus Sport Recaro seat was also specially developed for these cup cars. The small Exige cockpit requires the seat to be mounted as low as possible using new Lotus seat runners.

Developing and building the Exige Cup cars has given Lotus Sport invaluable experience in all areas of the current model range. Whether it be upgrading a car for road use or developing your car for the track, the Lotus Sport workshop can meet your needs in all areas.

Version 4 September 2009

The Lotus Sport Exige 400 was a one-off special build project by Lotus Sport for a South East Asian customer. The project car, bound for the highly competitive Asian GT championship, was based around a road going Exige with extensive development specifically for racing. The entire project was completed in just 6 months in complete secrecy by Lotus Sport.

The Lotus Sport designed and engineered racecar was manufactured in conjunction with RTN, the company famous for their various Le Mans successes. RTN brought their latest Motorsport techniques to produce lightweight yet strong Carbon Fibre bodywork to accompany the lightly modified road going bonded aluminium Exige chassis.

Power for this car is provided by a Swindon Racing Engines tuned GM 3 Litre V6 race engine, linked to a Hewland NLT 6 speed sequential gearbox, with AP Racing providing the braking system. With the GM V6 pushing out 400 bhp and the car weighing in at just 850 Kg, giving an astonishing power to weight ratio of 470 bhp/ton.

The quality of the finished car is a testament to the skills and abilities present within Lotus. The success of the vehicle is also unquestionable, winning and retaining its title in the highly competitive Sepang 12 hour race.

Indeed the car showed a clean pair of heels to a number of considerably more expensive and well established GT2 vehicles, being the fastest non-Japanese manufacturer.

This project highlights the skills and abilities present within Lotus Sport and the type of project we can carry out for individuals or companies alike. As an extension of the Lotus Cars brand, Lotus Sport can keep a project focused, on schedule and with high levels of secrecy as necessary.

BBC Top Gear Lotus Lada

When BBC Top Gear approached Lotus Sport in 2002 to modify a Lada Riva, many thought the show producers had asked too much. However, Lotus Sport were only too happy to oblige, highlighting their wide skills set and resources available.

The base model Lada was stripped and completely rebuilt with a range of modifications and improvements to make it a highly useable track and fast road car. Lotus Sport again used their wide range of resources; trim shop to personalise the interior details; body shop to complete a bare metal respray and full workshop to improve the car in all areas.

The heart of this development revolved around replacing the standard 1500cc engine with a 2 Litre Fiat 16 Valve engine. This unit came directly from a 131 Mirafiori, with a range of competition development to raise the power output to 180 bhp. Competition Bilstein dampers and some Lotus ride and handling know how helped to bring the dynamics up to scratch, along with a set of BBS rims and Yokohama AO48 tyres.

The bodywork was comprehensively reworked and altered to remove unnecessary lumps and bumps, giving a stylish shape. This was then finished by the Lotus Sport Bodyshop in high gloss black. The Lotus trim shop altered the interior trim panels, carpets and seats to a more luxurious and sport orientated specification! This included high backed Alcantara trimmed sport seats in bespoke colours.

This was strictly a one off project, completed in just two weeks, and could not be repeated. Indeed the costs involved make this unrealistic as a commercial project. However, the versatility of Lotus Sport was highlighted once again, being able to draw on the skills and resources of the company.

Lotus Esprit Rebuild

The Lotus Sport workshop can carry out a full or part restoration of your Lotus, using their expertise of the brand to complete a high quality and extensive rebuild. The Lotus Esprit featured on this page is one such example, stripped and rebuilt to the last nut and bolt and comprehensively upgraded simultaneously.

These upgrades featured in all areas of the vehicle, from improved handling characteristics and power train upgrades, to changing the interior specification and in car entertainment.

The Lotus Sport trim shop carried out a comprehensive re work of the interior. Many parts were altered such as the dashboard, trimmed in white hide to the owners request. In car entertainment improvement such as the unit installed in this Esprit, can be worked subtly into traditional interiors. This unit features a satellite navigation system, rear view camera along with DVD, MP3 and CD capabilities. Lotus Sport also installed a pair of amplifiers and improved speaker system including sub woofer and six 6” speakers.

The body of this Esprit was also completely repaired, receiving a new gel coat and extensive glass fibre repairs. This then received a full, high quality re-spray using the latest paint technology in the Lotus Sport Bodyshop. As the photographs show, the final paint finish is outstanding, having a glass like appearance whilst being tough and resilient.

Mechanical improvements included the addition of uprated damper units, produced in conjunction with Bilstein, along with modern polyurethane suspension bushes. A complete rebuild of the engine also featured a range of development parts, including modern silicone hoses and improved cooling system.

Lotus sport can carry out a full restoration of your Lotus, working to meet your requirements. This may be to original condition, with sympathetic modifications to suit modern day driving or track specification.

Version 4 September 2009

This letter is published in response to the increasing use of Lotus cars on trackdays and similar closed circuit events. Its purpose is to remind owners of the vehicle warranty conditions, and also to alert them to the associated parts and servicing issues to be observed if considering using the car in this way.

Vehicle WarrantyThe owner’s handbook Maintenance Record booklet and Maintenance Schedule include the following statement:

“The Lotus Elise, Exige and Europa, are designed as road going sports cars. It is recognised that owners may wish to use the car occasionally on closed circuit tracks to experience the car’s full range of dynamic capabilities. However, use of the car in a competitive manner, including timed runs or laps, is not endorsed by Lotus. This type of timed, competitive use will invalidate warranty and require appropriate levels of expert vehicle preparation and servicing.”

It is important that customers who exploit full vehicle performance on closed circuit tracks take appropriate action to optimise safety and vehicle durability. The following advice should be observed:

Pre-Track Use Check List, LSL520cLotus has produced a Pre-Track Use Check List detailing some important safety checks which should be undertaken by a properly qualified technician before any use of the car on a track day or similar closed circuit event.

Catalytic Converter (for cars with Toyota powertrain)Track driving activity will tend to subject the exhaust system to increased stresses. In order to enhance the durability and robustness of the exhaust system in these circumstances, in March 2008 the catalytic converter/downpipe assembly was upgraded. This change was introduced at approx. ‘08 M.Y. VIN serial number 1087.

Only the revised catalytic converter should be used for driving on closed circuit tracks. If the car was manufactured prior to this introduction and it is intended to use it on track, or to fit a non-standard exhaust muffler, the catalytic converter should first be upgraded.

Failure of the catalytic converter/downpipe assembly, or of any joint in the exhaust system, could cause overheating of surrounding components or body structure and initiate a vehicle fire.

Exhaust ClampThe slip joint between the catalytic converter outlet ‘U’ bend and the exhaust muffler is secured by a strap clamp and pinch bolt. The clamp is for one use only, and must not be re-used.

Be aware that the security of this joint is essential to ensure the integrity of the exhaust system, in respect of noise, heat release and safety. For cars used on closed circuits or in similar conditions, the Pre-Track Use Check List, LSL520c includes an operation to check the exhaust system for sealing and security.

Rear Brace Kit (for cars with Toyota powertrain)For regular track use, Lotus recommends that all suspension fixings be checked between sessions, and that on Toyota powertrain cars, the chassis rear brace kit LOTAC05377 is fitted to spread the load distribution across a wider base and to increase tolerance to abusive driving.

Camber Shim Plates Shim plates are fitted in the front and rear suspension assemblies in order to facilitate adjustments to individual wheel camber. For motorsport applications, where suspension loads are substantially increased, a higher grade shimplate specification is used. These upgraded shimplates were commonised to all cars from approx. ‘08 model year V.I.N. serial number 1742.

If camber adjustment is to be undertaken, or if any car is being prepared for track use, it is recommended that the later, “motorsport” type camber shim plates and securing bolts are fitted.

Be aware that any attempt to adjust camber outside of Lotus specification may result in inappropriate bolt thread engagement, and endanger security.

‘Big’ Brakes (for cars with Toyota powertrain)Exige S models with the Performance Pack option, and Cup 260 cars are fitted with ‘big brake’ kits using 4-piston front brake

callipers in conjunction with larger front discs. These brake kits are now available for retro-fitment to any Toyota powertrain Elise/Exige model and are offered in two versions, Fast Road and Sport.

In general, the Fast Road brakes offer significant benefits over standard brakes where full vehicle performance is exploited, primarily through reduced brake fade in conditions of repeated or prolonged heavy application. The Sport brakes, have marginally better front disc cooling via separate alloy mounting bells. Trade offs for both versions include a greater susceptibility to noise generation, and a more noticeable change in response between cold and hot brake system temperatures.

Owners of existing cars with ‘big brakes’, need to be aware when ordering replacement parts, of differences in callipers, disc bells and wheel bolts which were introduced in June 2008 at approx. ‘08 model year V.I.N. serial number 1742. Your dealer will be pleased to advise.

Brake Pad Bedding-inFor cars built with Fast Road brakes, the pad bedding-in procedure detailed in the Owner’s Handbook should be followed. For cars built with Sport brakes, and any car fitted with a ‘big brake’ retrofit kit using Pagid RS14B pads, an extended bedding-in procedure is necessary as detailed in form LSL534b, a copy of which follows.

Whichever brake equipment is fitted, it is vital that the brake pad material is matched at all four wheels - do not mix front and rear pad materials.

Owners who intend to fit a ‘big brake’ kit, and/or use their cars on track days or similar closed circuit events, may wish to take advantage of the discount available on upgrade kit combinations, details of which are atttached, and may be ordered from your Lotus dealer.

Lotus encourages owners to use their cars in whichever manner they most enjoy, but only and always with safety as the highest priority. For further information, please do not hesitate to contact your favoured Lotus Dealer who will be pleased to advise.

Important safety precautions and recommendations for cars used on race tracks or in a competitive manner.

Page 55: Celebrating 10 years of Lotus Sportc1042593.r93.cf3.rackcdn.com/7830_1287327541_Lot... · 2000 Lotus Sport Elise race car design evolved into the S1 Exige road car. 2002 Lotus Lada

Version 4 September 2009

Exige S models specified with the ‘Performance Pack’ prior to June 2008, and other Elise/Exige variants fitted with 4-piston front callipers and Pagid RS14B brake pads, require a brake bedding-in procedure to be followed before the brakes are used heavily. This procedure should also be applied if and whenever new brake pads and/or discs are fitted. Failure properly to bed-in the brake components will invalidate any related warranty.

WARNING; This procedure should be carried out only on a closed track or deserted straight road, paying appropriate consideration to any other track or road users. An observer passenger should be carried to assist in this regard.

The purpose of brake pad bedding is to:

• Ensure heat stabilisation and improve the cracking resistance of the cast iron discs. Cracks, or even disc failure can occur during the first few heavy stops if careful bedding is not carried out;

• Transfer a layer of friction material onto the disc faces to achieve maximum performance;

• Gradually increase the temperature in the components without causing thermal shock;

• Stabilise compressible materials to avoid a spongy pedal;

• Boil off volatile elements in the friction compound;

• Align the pad and brake disc surfaces for full contact.

If the pads are not bedded-in correctly, or are used aggressively straight after fitting, pad glazing may occur. This condition results from resins in the pad material crystallising on both the pad friction surface and the brake disc surface, producing brake judder and vibration. Also, rapidly escaping volatile elements and moisture from the resin, in seeking an immediate escape route out of the friction compound, can create small fissures that can lead to cracking and chunking of the material. The potential for overheating and distortion of the brake discs will also be increased.

ROAD PROCEDURE:

• After any type of brake servicing, before driving the car, pump the brake pedal to position the pads and ensure a firm pedal.

• Drive the vehicle cautiously to test function; brakes should be smooth with no vibrations or judder etc.

• Perform at least 30 light brake applications from 55 to 30 mph (90 to 50 km/h), preferably in blocks of 5. Leave at least ½ mile (1 km) between each block of 5 brake applications.

• For the next 100 miles (150 km), increase the braking pressures, avoiding if possible full stops from over 70 mph (110 km/h). Do not attempt any high-speed stops down to zero at this point, as only the pad faces will heat up with the mass remaining cool along with the mounting area.

• After another 100 miles (150 km) of slowly increasing the braking effort, full power stops can be used. By now the area around the caliper mounting bolts should be a light blue temper colour. This is a good indication that the correct heat soak has been achieved.

• The system is now ready for normal road use.

TRACK EVENTS:

WARNING: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT DISCS USED ON RACE TRACKS WILL BE SUBJECT TO HIGHER TEMPERATURES AND WEAR RATES THAN ACHIEVED WITH NORMAL ROAD USE. THIS CAN HAVE AN EFFECT ON THE LIFE OF THE DISC, ESPECIALLY WHEN USED WITH THE PAGID RS14 HIGH TORQUE COMPETITION PADS. BE AWARE THAT DISCS AND BRAKE PADS ARE CONSUMABLE ITEMS!

• At the start of a session, perform at least one warming up lap for the brakes by gradually increasing the effort at each corner and not dragging the brakes under power (left foot braking).

• Perform at least one cooling down lap at the end of each session using minimal braking

CAUTION: IF STOPPED WHEN THE BRAKES ARE VERY HOT, AVOID HOLDING THE CAR ON THE FOOTBRAKE UNTIL THE DISCS HAVE COOLED.

• Check your brake system thoroughly after each event.

• Race circuit use of a road car is more exacting on the brake system than a fully prepared race car due to the following; lesser road car brake cooling, increased chassis weight, longer braking distances due to driver technique and tyre grip. Therefore it is very important to check your brake system thoroughly after any such use. Bear in mind that race cars on average cover less than 50 laps of a circuit before being serviced.

New pads on used discs:

If new brake pads are to be fitted on used discs, it is recommended, taking appropriate health and safety precautions, to file a small chamfer on the leading edge of each pad to promote optimum bedding.

Additional Notes:

• Discs must be regularly and frequently inspected for excessive heat crazing and cracking.

• Discs with cracks emanating from mounting holes/slots, inside diameter, scallops, or outside diameter should be changed immediately.

• After heavy and prolonged use some surface crazing will often be evident. If this turns into distinct surface cracks which are radiating towards the inside or outside diameter the disc should be changed. IF IN DOUBT REPLACE
