Hi parents , I hope you are all well and keeping safe. Thankfully the weather is glorious. I hope everybody found last weeks activities ok and useful. I haven’t put set times down again, so you can set your own timetable. Please don’t worry if not all tasks are completed. Please just do the best you can. Websites are fantastic but I have tried to include things to do without them as well. I intended to read Kensuke’s Kingdom with the class and base some literacy and PSHE work on the book. I have scanned some pages. Sorry, it is not best of quality. ICT isn’t my strongest point. Thursday 23 rd April a.m. Maths Intro - Begin with supermovers online. Choose some x tables videos to sing and dance along too and then shapes video. Todays focus – 3d shapes How many 3d shapes can you remember/name? E.g. cube, cuboid, sphere, cone, pyramid, triangular prism. Make a list in work book. A little treasure hunt - can you find a cube and a cuboid? A cereal box would be great for a cuboid. A cube might be a bit trickier but you may have a dice or a cube shaped box or oxo cube. Talk about edges, vertices and faces. A vertice is just another word for a corner. The face is the 2d flat shape on the 3d shape. Talk about how the cube and cuboid are similar but different. e.g. They both have 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices but the cube must each face on a cube must be a square. Can they now find a cylinder and a sphere. You may find a cone but a bit tricky. A little 3d shape hunt - in the house and garden can they then make a tally at how many of each 3d shape they can find. In the garden they may spot lots of chimneys and pipes etc and examples of other shapes.

How many 3d shapes can you remember/name? E.g. cube, cuboid, sphere, cone, pyramid, triangular prism.

If they wish they could make a poster showing examples of the different 3d shapes they have spotted.

LiteracyThis term our topic is Explorers and adventure stories.

Have a chat and ask if they can think of diff erent genres (types of stories) e.g. thrillers, horrors, comedy, f antasy, sci fi and adventure.

Can they think of any adventure stories? One of my f avourite f ilm is The Goonies and I used to enjoy Famous Five books. What makes them adventures?

Look at the f ront cover of the book Kensukes Kingdom by Michael Morpugo.

What do they think it will be about?

This is the blurb on the back of the book :

‘Washed up on an island in the Pacifi c, Michael struggles to survive on his own. With no f ood and no water, he curls up to die. When he makes, there is a plate beside him of fi sh, of f ruit and a bowl of water. He is not alone…’

I wonder how he ended up on the island? I wonder who lef t the f ood and water?

I n the story Michael’s father decides that the f amily will sail around the world together.

Do you think that would be a good idea f or your f amily to do something like this?

Write some reasons FOR and AGAI NST.

FOR AGAI NST

One long holiday and no school. I t is scary, sailing into the unknown.

LUNCHTIMEP.M. Reading activities ERIC – Everyone reading in class or ERAH – Everyone reading at home now. I have attached a copy of Kensukes Kingdom Chapter 1. Please read together today and tomorrow and then answer some comprehension questions.Welsh – we have welsh helpwr heddiw session each day when the class helper plays games and takes the role of the teacher and Thursday is our welsh lesson.

Please have a conversation at home using the language mat. The pupils are really good at this and will help you with the language

patterns. One of you ask the questions and the other answer and then swap.

After having conversations using the language mat I would like them to remember how we use prepositions to describe where an object or teddy etc is.e.g. under, on top of, beside etc. They should remember most but I will attach some examples to refresh their memory.

If you can find a box and a teddy/ toy you can play a game whereby you place the toy somewhere and they tell you where it is using language pattern of:

Ble mae…. ? (Where is?... ) Mae …… yn y bocs. (The …. is in the box) They could design a poster with the pictures and sentences or a sentence

and a little picture to go with each one.

Like last week when they wrote things they will enjoy once the lockdown is over, this week write down what they are grateful for. They could write them down on the back of a postcard instead of a jar if they so wish.e.g. Things I have put in my jar so far are : Being able to run and walk the dog, books to read, still speak to friends and family on the phone.

I’d love to hear some of yours and if you keep the jars or little boxes they can bring them in to school when it is safe to do so.

Friday 24th April Mathsa.m. Supermovers – choose a couple of times tables videos to sing and dance along to and another maths video.See how many shapes they remember and match the shape to the name.

Ask which shapes could you stack on top of each other, which could roll and which have straight edges and curves or no curves etc.

Discuss the properties of a cube, cuboid, cylinder and sphere and make a table writing down the properties.e.g.A cubeVertices = 8Edges = 12Faces = 6

Cuboid is same as a cube.CylinderVertices = 0Edges = 2Faces = 3

Cone Vertices = 1Edges = 1Faces = 2

SphereVertices = 0Edges = 0Faces = can be 1 or 0

Literacy

On back of books they have blurbs which give a description of the book they are about to read and similar with films on DVDs and trailers.

I ’m sure you have seen the story of Captain Tom raising money for the NHS.

Children to talk about him raising money by walking 100 laps of his garden.

What adjectives (describing words) would they use to describe him e.g. courageous, inspiring etc and pretend he is to be featured in a film or a book.

Read about a brave, old man….

Task – Design a front cover for a book or a film poster about Captain Tom with a blurb to persuade people to read the book or watch the film.

P.M.Read the rest of Chapter 1 of Kensuke’s Kingdom and answer the following Questions.

1. Which character thinks sailing around the world is irresponsible?2. What does Michael learn about his parents during yacht training?3. Barnacle Bill thinks children are a ‘liability’. What does he mean?4. What qualities do the family have that help them to get through

the difficult challenge of learning to sail?5. How do we know this text is a personal reccount?

P.E. – It would normally be our weekly outdoor P.E. lesson. Why not go for a walk together or hula nation exercises (Hoola Nation has a page on facebook) in the front room or if you want a challenge Joe Wickes HIIT workout.

If you have a garden – Mini circuit training

Squats, lunges, star jumps, windmill arms, burpees. Jogging laps of the garden. Shuttle runs from cone to cone or plant pots/stones/garden gnomes – the

children will know about shuttle runs.Parents v children challenge

Keepy up challenge with a football

If you have a tennis racket and ball – how many times can you hit a ball up and down with dropping on the floor.

Make it harder by flipping the racket over and back.

A little rally between you.

If you go on wru.wales/kidsactivities they have a nice hopscotch game using your name.

HAVE FUN AND KEEP SAFE

Mr Williams 😊
