“SPOON RIVER READS Extends Local Heritage Book Submission Deadline”

We are all the heirs to our ancestors’ dreams

Spoon River Reads has chosen the beautifully written book My Antonia by Willa Cather for area communities

to read, enjoy and discuss this fall. One of My Antonia’s main themes is the story of immigrants arriving to settle

the newly opened territory of Nebraska.

Focusing on the immigrant theme, Spoon River Reads coordinators Jenny Beal and Carol Blackfelner are

working closely with local author Brooks Carver to compile a book of short stories highlighting our own Spoon

River immigrant heritage. Old family photographs and ethnic recipes are also being collected for the book.

“Spoon River Country: the Immigrant Story will feature stories about our Spoon River ancestors as told by their

heirs,” Carver stated. “This book will keep our ancestors‟ stories alive and allow for future generations to know

and appreciate their heritage.”

“Over twenty-five stories have been submitted since April 1st, but we know there are many more fascinating

stories left untold that we want to include in the book” Beal said.

Local artist Mary Ellen Carver has created the cover art taken from a 1910 photograph depicting her own Irish

ancestors posed on their porch in the company town of Brereton, Illinois.

“The deadline for submission of the stories has been extended to August 1st to allow more time for community

members to turn in a „What‟s Your Story‟ form and/or to complete one-on-one interviews.” The story forms can

be picked up and returned at the Parlin-Ingersoll Library, SRC Community Outreach Center, YMCA, YWCA,

Crawford Home Furnishings and most local churches.

SPOON RIVER READS invites anyone who has an immigrant story to tell or knows of someone who should be

interviewed, to contact Parlin-Ingersoll Library at 647-0328 or SRC Community Outreach Center at 647-6260 or

email [email protected].

“The Spoon River College Community Chorus will present two programs in 2011-12.”

An American Choral Mosaic: Music by America‟s Great Composers will be presented November 12 and

13. Rehearsals will begin in September. This program includes such composers as Aaron Copland, Randall

Thompson, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Shaw, Harry Warren, Duke Ellington, and “Fats” Waller.

Cole, Irving, George, and Jerome will be presented in mid-February. Rehearsals will begin in January. This

production will feature the works of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and Jerome Kern – the “Kings”

of music from the 1930s – 1950s. These composers are famous for single compositions (e.g. White Christmas,

Rhapsody in Blue, Let‟s Call the Whole Thing Off) and for such musicals as ANYTHING GOES, PORGY AND

BESS, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, and SHOWBOAT.)

The Chorus is open to anyone who loves to sing quality music. The chorus currently has about 60 members

ranging in age from 15 to 80. Rehearsals are treated like classrooms where participants not only learn the songs

but also the history and other information about the songs, composers, and time periods in which the songs were

written. Net proceeds from the performances are given to the SRC Foundation for scholarships.

For more information, please contact Carol Davis at 309-647-6395 or visit the website (http://www.src.edu/
