Atlanta Magazine describes Nic as having "the growl of Howlin' Wolf and the swagger of Otis Redding..." www.musicfarm.com/ ART Return to the Sea: Saltworks by Motoi Yamamoto Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art 161 Calhoun Street The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art has organized a major traveling exhibition of new work by contemporary Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto. Yamamoto is known for working with salt, often in the form of temporary, intricate, large-scale installations. Salt, a traditional symbol for purification and mourning in Japanese culture is used in funeral rituals and by sumo wrestlers before matches. It is frequently placed in small piles at the entrance to restaurants and other businesses to ward off evil spirits and to attract benevolent ones. www.halsey.cofc.edu FESTIVAL Piccolo Spoleto Festival This year Charleston’s premiere arts festival focuses on the work of contemporary artists. Expect to be inspired, roused and delighted. A sense of physicality permeates the 2012 Festival program, from energetic, body-centric dance in Cedar Lake’s Violet Kid, to intense, high-risk acrobatics in Traces. On the music front, the offerings include k.d lang, modern American string band Joy Kills Sorrow, ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro, and New Orleans’ Rebirth Brass Band. Bo Joseph (New York, NY) will exhibit works from the “A Lexicon of Persistent Absence” series.
