In September, a good friend congratulated

me with the Chinese saying, *f.!§~~~ilaoma shitu), upon learning that I assumed

the executive directorship of the Center.

This endearing phrase simply translates to

"an old horse knows the way."

That said, this "old horse" would like to

thank each and every one of you who made

2008 an exciting and productive year. We

are blessed with your generosity, participa-

tion, and steadfast support. 2009 promises

to be a challenging year in light of our de-pressed economy. We are faced with re-

duced revenues. In the months ahead, we

will be asking you for additional help to

weather us through this tough period.

Nonetheless, we will feature four major

exhibitions: In Search of Roots, Present

Tense: Contemporary Art about Chinese

Youth, Chinese Tea (in collaboration with

the Pacific Heritage Museum), and Dora

Hsiung's Fiber Art. Additionally we will

continue our cinema series, with a special

March event with Alex Tse, Chinese

American filmmaker and screenwriter of theupcoming Warner Brothers movie, Watch-

men.

Please join us on several upcoming events:

January 16 - opening of the In Search of

Roots exhibition

January 21 - CHOW (Chinatown On

Wednesdays) sponsored by the Mayor's

Office

February 7 and 8 - Spring Festival

February 21 - Presentation by interns of the

In Search of Roots program

InMay and September, we are co-sponsor

two higher education fairs to assist lim

and non-English speaking parents and th

high school children on how to get into

leges and universities. Education has alw

been an important Chinese value. Wea

excited to be part of this effort.

Please visit our website www.c-c-c.org for

latest updates on our events.

Another exciting bit of news for you:

Center plans to expand the In Search

Roots program for adults over 27 yea

of age. The current program focuses

youth between 17 and 27. The first gr

will travel either in the Spring or Fall, c

centrating on individuals with ancestral ro

in the Taishan (Toisan) and Kaip

(Hoiping) areas in the Pearl River Deltagion of Guangdong Province. Additiona

the group will visit Meiling Pass, and Z

jixiang, the Tang Dynasty and Song Dyna

historic places where the majority of the e

Cantonese speaking settlers came from. If

are interested in being part of this progra

please apply through our website at www.c

In this newsletter you will find the job

nouncement for the position of executive

rector of the Center. It is my intentionserve as the executive director until the Bo

fmds a permanent appointment and to ens

a seamless and smooth transition.

Meanwhile, this "old horse" wishes each

of you and your loved ones continued g

health, love, happiness, peace, and prosper

CCC's Donor Spotlight: Tiger Wong

By Ruth Young

Tiger Wong was a teenager growing up in the

early 1960s in Chinatown when he first heard

about the Chinese Culture Center. As Wong

started working in Chinatown during the early

80s to mid-90s, he tried to get a picture of

what organizations in Chinatown were do-

ing. One of the organizations he truly be-

gan to get to know was the Center. He says,

"I realized that the mission of the Center is

a link to our past." Wong says the In

Search of Roots program, which brings C

nese American youth back to China to expl

their ancestry, is a great example. He is g

that the program brings future generatio

closer to their past by teaching them "ab

their roots and how they lived and the ha

ships."

Wong says one of the main reasons he

been a long and dedicated supporter of

Center is that "the Culture Center had a d

purpose to enrich future generations and p

ple who do not fully understand Chinese h

tory." In return, "It was a joy to see youn

kids going back to see their roots," Wo

says. He believes it is important to ensure

Center has the fmancial means to be via

for years to come. Wong recognizes that

classes offered at the Center, such as the M

darin classes, benefit the community at la

and he is glad that the Center's gallery i

place to view local artists in town.

Wong, who is confident in the future of

Center, says, "The Center's Board is stro

they know which direction they want to t

the Center." When asked about his hopes

the Center, Wong replies, "I hope we

continue the mission of the Center to re

out to the community at large. There is a r

Chinese culture we must preserve. If

don't, we lose it."

Celebrating a Successful Harmony & Bliss 2008

By Lenora Kwok

The event was sold out. The room was set in

black, copper and red with varied colored

pottery accents. The champagne chilled and

readied for serving as were the 6 magnificent

wine-paired courses such as the Thai Green

Curry Seafood Soup, Roast Soy Hoisin Pork

Medallions with Sweet Chile Ginger Glaze.

Three hundred and ten elegantly dressed men

and women braved the driving rain and wind

to join the evening of Harmony and Bliss2008, the signature fundraising event for the

Chinese Culture Center held November 1st at

the Hilton Financial District.

Over 500 volunteer hours, countless staff

hours and the immeasurably appreciated sup-

port of our community melded to create yet

another successful event that raised funds to

support the ongoing efforts of the Chinese

Culture Center. Deep gratitude is given to the

Evon Corporation, the Hilton Financial Dis-

trict, United Commercial Bank, Union Bank

of California, Macy's, Cathay Pacific Air-

ways, Wells Fargo Bank, Dr. & Mrs. Rolland

Lowe, Dan and Irene Riley, Atherton In-

vestment Group - Marjorie Quon, Dr. &

Mrs. Eric Leung, Michael Lee, Him Mark

and Laura Lai, the alumni of the In Search

of Roots Program, many individual donors

and each of you that attended and supported

Harmony and Bliss 2008. Your contin

support, sacrifice and giving are the hear

our collective efforts to preserve and sh

culture for ourselves, our children and

broader community. A Thousand Th

Yous!
