President Ken Robichaux opened the general meeting at 7:00 PM. Twenty members were in attendance. The president had the following announcements:1. He reminded the audience that this was the last meeting of the year.2. He announced that the speaker for tonight canceled and that we were

not able to find a replacement. 3. Two new members have signed up: Kim Turner, from Savannah and

Russ Young, from Richmond Hill. Russ was present and related that he and his wife had moved from Charlotte, N.C. to Richmond Hill. He had been cycling in the Charlotte NC area, but it had become too dangerous. The audience welcomed him with applause.

4. Bob Smith has resigned from his position as Membership Director. The Board recognized Bob’s many contributions to the club not only as Membership Director but also as Ride Director and Newsletter Editor. A small gift will be the Board’s token of gratitude on behalf of all club members. Margie Robichaux has gracefully offered to take care of membership issues until a new membership director can be found. The president asked for candidates to please step forward.

5. The president announced that the Savannah Bicycle Campaign has set up a Memorial Page for Ed Jewell on their website (www.bicyclecampaign.org), where also instructions on how to donate in honor of Ed can be found. Our own website also has a Memorial Page honoring our departed friend.

6. The Board has nominated the following persons for the five electable positions. President: Ken Robichaux; Vice-President: we do not have a nominee yet; Treasurer: Joe Kreger; Secretary: Jack Knops; Member-at-Large: Roy Mueller.

7. Vote for Member Of The Year. Please e-mail the name of the person you feel has done the most for the club in 2014 to Jack Knops ([email protected]) preferably with a copy to Treasurer Joe Kreger ([email protected]).

8. The next meeting will be on Monday, January 5, 2015.

The president then asked the audience to participate in a brainstorming session for topics/persons that could serve as subjects/presenters for monthly meetings. The results: a) Rick Royer asked if the police department could be contacted to see if

an officer could speak on issues such as safety, update on investigations of car/bike accidents, registration, theft, etc. (Continued on Page 2)

(Continued from Page 1)b) Joe Kreger suggested a session on Bike Maintenance, perhaps with help from Quality Bike.c) Ken Robichaux felt that a program on information about and use of a Heart Rate Monitor should be considered, perhaps in the context of other medical bicycling issues.d) Holly Snuggerud suggested a program on how to shop for a bike; what to look for; what prices to expect; how is bike fitted to person? Etc.e) Don Gerosa stated that he would love to hear an expert racer provide tips on the art of riding, gearing, gear changing, cadence, drafting, preparing for a hill, etc. Perhaps a member of the Wheelmen could be found. f) Joe Kreger mentioned that John Bennet could be asked again to provide an update on bicycling from the SBC perspective.g) Joe also reminded us on the fruitful presentation by the Coastal Greenway director about a year ago. An update could be useful.h) A member of the audience pointed out that there is a great need for beginning riders to become familiar with /learn where to find safe routes in Savannah. i) Not mentioned, but added here, is a suggestion to find a speaker or have an audience participation exchange (like today) about what people have found useful in winter clothing.

The brainstorming session led to a markedly elevated, good mood in the audience. Other announcements:A. Holly Snuggerud will lead a C Ride in Harris Neck as an alternative to the Claxton Century Ride on November 8. Darrel Snuggerud and Don Gerosa will assist.B. Darrel Snuggerud raised a question about the Soup Ride, traditionally at the end of January or beginning of February and formerly hosted by Karen Dove Barr. Don and Shari Gerosa graciously offered that they host the Soup Ride this year.C. John Gerardi summarized recent developments in the Ride Department. There will be an every-other-month combined ride with the Kickin’ Asphalt Club. On December 14 Joe Kreger will lead the Christmas Light Ride in the downtown area, followed by dinner at Juarez. On January 1st we will have the New Year’s Day Ride. Both are traditional rides.

The Ride Director asked input from the audience to get more people to ride, especially the C ride. Compliments about achievements were extended to the ride director by an audience member.

Rick Royer announced that he had scouted the Georgetown area, and, while riding there found it to be beautiful. However, there is not more space than for what he termed a D ride. The audience felt that there is need for a D ride and that the club needs to focus on C and D riders more than we do.

The meeting adjourned at 7:40 PM.

Respectfully submitted, Jack Knops, Secretary

Ride Classifications - A/B/B-/C/SA Very Fast - 19+ MPH (Avg. 19+ MPH flat road speed)Vigorous riding with excellent bike handling skills. Expect cooperative contribution to group within abilities. No sweep, possible regrouping. Riders are expected to navigate on own if dropped.

B Fast - 17-18 MPH (Avg. 17+ MPH flat road speed)Brisk to vigorous riding with above average bike handling skills. Expect cooperative contribution to group within abilities. No sweep, possible regrouping. Riders are expected to navigate on own if dropped.

B- Moderate - 15-16 MPH (Avg. 15+ MPH flat road speed)Moderate to brisk riding with good bike handling skills. Some cooperative pacelining skills required. No sweep, possible regrouping. Riders are expected to be self-sufficient and navigate on own if dropped.

C Intermediate - 10-14 MPH (Avg. 12 MPH flat road speed)Moderate riding, sightseeing and destination-oriented. Regroups often. A sweep may be appointed. Riders should be capable of riding at least 30 miles.

S Slow - 9-11 MPH (Avg. 10 MPH flat road speed)Leisurely riding with more attention to scenery. Ride is paced to slowest rider. Regroups often. A sweep is always appointed. Riders should be capable of riding at least 25 miles.

Rider TipsSelect a ride that is within your ability based on the ride distance

and pace indicated on our monthly Ride Schedule (see page 3). Call the Ride Leader with any questions or concerns. Trying a pace one level lower than were you think you should be is recommended for new members in order to introduce you to our riders.

All A, B, and B- riders should be self-sufficient, i.e. carry a pump, tire irons, spare tube, patch kit, tools, money and health insurance card. They should use a cycling computer and be able to read a cue sheet.

All riders in the club must wear and ANSI, SNELL, and/or CPSC approved helmet throughout a ride. All rides should bring one or two water bottles with them on a ride.

Check the CBTC website for any last minute ride updates.

Ride Leader TipsBefore the day of the ride, make sure you have sufficient cue

sheets and one or two waiver (sign-in) forms. The Ride Director can provide these if you can’t access the club’s website.

If you are unfamiliar with the ride, it would be a good idea to ride the course with a cue sheet to be sure that it is accurate and you know the route. Marking the road with yellow paint at important turn is also a good idea.

If a rider call you with questions, make sure that your ride is within his or her ability, based on the ride distance and pace. Trying a lower distance or pace should be recommended for new members in order to introduce them to our rides.

Ride leaders should announce the following rules for safe riding before the start of a ride:

• Use hand signals to communicate turns, slowing, stopping and road surface hazards• Slow and stop at all stop signs and traffic lights• Keep a safe distance between you and the rider in front of you

• Ride no more than two abreast on quiet roads and only where it is safe to do so• Ride single file on all busy roads• Ride alert with your head up and eyes up the roadThe group may stop for mechanical problems (if there is a

designated sweep who can assist, then the ride can proceed). If a rider wishes to leave the route, tell the Ride Leader.

Go over the ride course, pointing out any areas of potential danger.

Revised Ride ClassificationsPlease take a minute to review our revised Ride Classifications and Rider Tips on the left-hand column of the page. They were updated to make them agree more closely with the classifications used nationally by other bike clubs. They haven’t been reviewed since being adopted by CBTC in December 2007.The gist of the changes is that the A ride has gotten upgraded to Very Fast with the B ride taking over the Fast classification. We’ve now added a new B- classification, called Moderate. All three of these classifications expect the riders to be “self-sufficient”, that is, capable of riding the route alone if dropped. It also means that these riders should be capable of changing a flat tire and carry a pump (or CO2 cartridges), tire irons, spare tubes, patch kit and tools. They should use a cycling computer and be able to read a cue sheet. The C ride classification has not been changed; it still is called Intermediate. However, the C riders are not being asked to be “self-sufficient” since it is expected that they will learn these skills prior to moving up the B- rides. The Social S ride has been made slower than the C ride, since it is paced to the slowest rider now.

A Tribute to Bob Smith

As Bob’s time on the board of Coastal Bicycle Touring Club comes to a close, we would like to thank him for his service to our club. Here’s a little information about Bob.

Bob moved to Savannah from Connecticut in 2000 and tried to continue his running routine, but like most that transplant themselves from the more temperate climates, found the heat of Savannah’s summers to be a bit oppressive for serious running. He’d been running at least one marathon every year for 25 years including Boston, NY, Newport and Washington. He started his cycling career with the “Age-In-Motion” guys after seeing and ad in the Savannah News, riding every Tuesday and Thursday at Hunter Army Airfield. Soon he joined the Saturday rides and eventually started going to all the rides where several nights of camping were involved (BRAG, Bike Florida, Bike Virginia, Festivelo in Charleston, Bike Safari, Bragfest, Cruisin’ in the Country, St. Mary’s State Park, George L Smith State Park and Jeckyl Island).

Bob joined CBTC in February 2001 when Franz Froelicher was President. Rick Ricci was Newsletter Editor, Joe Kreger was Treasurer, Merchandise Manager and Membership Director and the Ride Director was David Smith. He took over the Newsletter Editor spot from Bob Ventura in March 2003, Membership Director from Will Fell in October 2008 and Ride Director in October 2010. The last full-time Ride Director had been Eddy Rayford in 2006. Except for his two and a half year period as Ride Director, the job had been passed around to board members for a month or 3 months each.

Bob has ridden in three century rides. His first was the Savannah Century which took him over 9 hours to complete. We all know that’s a pretty good time considering the heat of Savannah over Labor Day weekend. His other two (Cruisin’ in the Country) only took 6 hours to complete. He’s ridden the B&O Canal from Cumberland, WV to Washington, D.C. via the toe path with the Venturas and along the Hudson River from Albany, NY over the George Washington Bridge to New York City’s Battery Park. He has also ridden overseas in France while taking a barge trip with his wife and in the Italian Dolomites.

While Bob’s time on the Board of Directors comes to a close, we hope to continue to see him on our weekly Saturday rides. And if you see him, give him a “Thank you” and a pat on the back for over a decade of service to our club.

We Thank You Bob!
